I found a spot for him! Lyubushkin's.
Okay but you said he wasn't good enough to crack any NHL roster. I'm pointing out that he is, and likely would have if it wasn't for Minty playing so well. And I'm sure there's plenty of other teams that would love to have him playing right now.

Maybe, but Carrick and Leason aren’t speedsters either. I wouldn’t want Johnston on any other line, but he fits nicely on this heavy 4th line Cronin put together. Jones would be ok there too. Just no Silfver please.
Agreed on Silfverberg.

I just think there’s a reason that Johnston has never played more than 32 games on an islanders team that had some pretty mediocre seasons. I think he’s the guy id sit before Jones though as far as our left wings go however.

No, I said based on the fact that we had the worst blueline and he didn't crack the roster, yeah, he wouldn't make any others. The inference is all other rosters have better bluelines, which, heading into training camp - was obvious. 2 games into the season isn't enough to dispel that fact.

Maybe he would've made the team if he played better than Mintyukov - but he didn't.

Are you saying that he would make another NHL roster because you think he almost made ours? That's certainly a take.

But the next calendar year also includes next training camp. Which I think is most likely. Sorry if that was unclear.

That is a very soft defense aside from Gudas. I would prefer to replace Fowler with a stay at home player personally since we’d have plenty of offense.

Regardless I think Fowler should be here all of this season. I think next season is up for debate and not too early to start discussing it

Olen Zellweger is never going to be a prominent Penalty killer. Come on

YOU are saying Zell needs to be a prominent PK'er, not me. Tell you're self to, "Come on."

Zell doesn't have to be a prominent PK'er, but he should learn how to PK in the AHL so that he isn't literally "iced out" in games where we induce too many penalties. And in some games were two PK'ers are put in the box, Zell would have to step up both in the AHL and NHL. Generally, you have two sets of defensive PK'ers. For example, Lindholm and Manson are our PK1 pairing. They're probably out there between 60 - 70% of the kill, which might be two shifts. The PK2 unit will then give them a break or finish out the PK.

The whole point of Z improving his defense to where he can participate on the PK is so that his body can still be engaged in the game. In doing so, that could allow him to stay in the flow of the game to where he can contribute more offensively.

Are you opposed to Zell making himself more valuable?

No, you said "he's going to force his way onto the roster at some point in the next calendar year" which does include this season. My point about this being premature was referring to having to figure out how he fits on the roster. Barring injuries, he doesn't right now. Even when injuries occur, he's still 3rd in line at best.

If he's going to be as good as you think he is as early as you say, there's still room for him after training camp next year and we wouldn't have to trade anyone. Fowler, Drysdale, Mintyukov, Gudas, LaCombe, Zellweger.

There's no point being concerned about making room for him next year. If he's good enough to make the team - he will.
Zellwegger/hinds will fill the spot of labosh when we trade him at the deadline.

Having the worst blueline doesn't really have anything to do with it. It wasn't him vs the worst blueline. It was him vs the other prospects, who are also very good.

Sure Minty played better (a little better, but enough). Most teams don't have a prospect like Minty to beat out Zell.

Are you saying that no other teams had a prospect make the jump to the NHL this year? Or that every prospect that did is better than Zellweger? That's certainly a take.

Man, I love some of your guys optimism about our prospects, I really do, but it sounds like you are projecting every one of our D prospects actually makes it to the NHL, and in a Ducks sweater.

I have no doubt that some of those guys will be competent everyday NHLers, but all of them? And were not going to use any of them as trade bait?

When Fowlers contract is up, he will be turning 35. Its quite possible his career will be over at that point, but due to his style of play he could also still have a few more years in him. A resigned Fowler at like $3mil at age 35, playing a 4/5/6 spot doesnt sound like a bad thing to me.

I do not see a world in which Fowler gets pushed out before his contract is up. I understand the arguments for it, I just dont see our prospects all coming in and off them earning 1/2/3/4 spots above Fowler.

eh, tu, Brute

Minty is in his D+2 season. LaCombe is in his D+5 season.

Lindholm stayed in the NHL all season long in his D+2 season. Manson stayed in the NHL all season long in his D+5 season, granted, though he got called up in his D+4 season.

I dunno why many continue to bash on Murray for false things. And the oddest thing is that Murray already had a playoff roster when promoting the young D men.
Not looking to bash Murray, and I am going off of feel and a memory that's weak for statistical info of this nature XD

I'm talking about guys that didn't have NHL level experience often getting a smaller shot, flip-flopping between AHL/NHL, etc. You're absolutely right about LaCombe, and I did already think he'd have a good chance at being a mainstay. I think my comment there was more with consideration of Minty, Luneau, and Zellweger. While they're all not the youngest guys, they're still prospects with basically 0 NHL experience (LaCombe 2 games end of last season isn't enough to really count), and I still feel that standard Murray would if anything be a bit slower on them being introduced to the NHL. If I'm wrong about that, I'm wrong and I'm okay with that, I appreciate the discussion either way.

A Gudas fowler bottom pair in 2 seasons is likely. And that’s not necessarily from all our youngsters pushing them down. It’s having an abundance of d prospects to trade for a true top pairing dman who can play alongside minty. Second pair is anyone’s guess of which of our plethora of young dmen play there.

It does when the argument is "he would've made the roster on some other team."

1. There's no proof of that.
2. I gave an example as to why he wouldn't have, which you aren't grasping.

Most teams don't have a prospect like Minty to beat out Zell.
The argument isn't "which team has the best prospects." See above.

Are you saying that no other teams had a prospect make the jump to the NHL this year? Or that every prospect that did is better than Zellweger? That's certainly a take.
No. And your strawman attempt is confounding.

At least I was trying to understand your point based on what you were saying. That doesn't seem to be the case on the other side of the argument.

You're adding qualifiers to deny the connection. Also, are you saying that Killorn isn't a physical deterrent on the ice and you're prefer Johnston over Killorn? Killorn will be around top-6 players whereas Johnston is not.
No, that is ridiculous. Killorn is a top 6 forward and he plays with some physicality, but to say he is a deterrent is silly.

I always felt it was because Matt Martin is the exact same player, but a bit more skilled. We don’t have a Matt Martin blocking Johnston from more ice time.

Silfverberg is a terrible NHL player in 2023-2024. I’m sorry, he had a great career for the Ducks, arguably a top 15-ish Duck of all time, but he’s cooked.

I hope they give him some games off - manage his work load at least

Its his last season in the NHL. Unless there is a prospect that really earns that slot, I think we're sending him off on a high note. They still see enough in him to give him a letter, so there is something still there.
