Carrick is our best bottom 6 player

No knock on him, but that just can’t be the case next season. Verbeek has to improve that
Agreed to an extent. And full marks to Carrick, I think he'd be a fine addition to a good chunk of the NHL's fourth lines as a good energy guy and I think the Ducks should keep him in that role unless his play falls off.

I think Max Jones fits that bill too and I'm kind of hoping that with the right support in the bottom 6 he can have an improvement to his secondary scoring. He just hasn't had the finish but he's been pretty strong at creating chances.

Our fourth line has been fine.. Our big problem has been our third liners.. Silf is basically and offensive blackhole now.. Henrique takes to many days off. I think mcguin and jones need to play together.. they both forecheck like crazy..

Yeah I hate saying that Silf does look better this year, but still not good enough. He's been a somewhat solid defensive presence but I wouldn't say he's been anywhere close to his best and like you said, offensively barren. I think the same goes for Henrique. He has a solid play here and there but as a whole he's been a lot like Terry. Good moments but a lot of turnovers and mistakes. The difference is with Terry he's still relatively young and he could get it back together. Rico it looks more like he's just cooked at this level and he sets a rough example for the kids as one of the veteran role models.

I'd be down to see McGinn and Jones together but I haven't been overly impressed with the former's play lately either.

That hasn’t happened in weeks.

Sure, but like I said, there’s no evidence that he’s actually making the team tougher when he plays. An increase in hitting could theoretically be evidence that the team plays bigger when he’s playing, but it isn’t currently in his favor. And if there is any legitimate evidence, I’d be happy to say I’m wrong.
I think we are watching different games.

Evidence would come from the players. I don’t know about the current roster, but guys like Getzlaf and Selanne have said an enforcer in the lineup makes the team tougher. It’s not something you’re going to find staring at statistical analysis.

What evidence is there that happens on a regular basis? And whom is Johnston protecting there? Sam Carrick? McGinn?
Well Sam Carrick had to accept a fight from the Kings tough guy when Johnston was scratched and he received a bit of a beating, so there’s that. Against Chicago McGinn had a massive hit on a d-man and Johnston turned around to make sure McGinn didn’t get assaulted after. If Johnston’s presence allows McGinn to bodycheck like that, he should be in the lineup.

I think most people see what they want to see when it comes to these arguments. You see a big guy who intimidates and brings a palpable presence to the lineup. I see a guy who can't handle a puck or skate. The stats usually help decide the discussion because they take the eye test out of it.

There might be certain games where an agitator in the opposing team's lineup makes Johnston's presence advised. And I understand players (particularly older players) will speak out for the role of enforcer. But I think a lot of those guys still think of the game in terms of when they grew up. The game has changed.

Johnston might be a great locker room guy, which has value. And perhaps there are some other intangibles he brings to the ice. But he's unquestionably a detriment to the team scoring goals or defending when he's out there.

When all the forwards are healthy, McGinn and Jones flanking Carrick would make a solid 4th line. High energy, decent speed on the wings, defensively sound, but also a physical forechecking presence.
My thoughts exactly.. and replace Silf with Leason...

He hasn't hardly played in weeks either

Ask anyone who plays hockey if they feel more confident with a tough guy on the team.

Just a some questions and since I don't where also to put it; I've only watched highlights for the past month, but a lot of close games despite losses so I'm just wondering how have they played? Still battling for pucks like they did early season? Huge chuck of talent missing, but do they still generate offense? Are they skating hard more than a period? Can the young blue-line still move the puck as well they did early season? Have the players we expected nothing from (Leason and Vaakanainen come to mind) kept their game up? Carlsson and Killorn have looked solid in the highlights, but does it match the play in 60 minutes? Gibson and Dostal don't seem to give up too many easy goals so I guess they are still fine? Too bad about Terry funk, but he is and probably always be streaky so not worried about him.

Just out of the loop so I thought I'd ask. Excited to watch again as the injured guys come back and hopefully they stay healthy rest of the way. Some might not agree, but I hope they start going again and screw themself of a top pick. Tired of losing and that early season magic was so much fun to watch, and I think it's time for this team to start winning to get the morale up. Bodes well to come in next season if you get a little taste of what you can do.

the red wasn’t for no contact?
That’s a lot of red
It appears to be. Only ones in those images that are wearing red are Z, McTavish and it looks like Lundestrom in that first one but I can't be sure. There are some wearing orange which makes it look like there are more wearing red than there are.

Vatrano and Strome are in red too
Edit: or is that orange? Damnit
Looks like orange to me.

I dont think they would have 2 colors that close to each other to determine who is non-contact. I mean, there is a stupidity factor there so you never know, but that would seem kinda dumb.

To me, the first picture has 2 red 1 orange on the left, and a clearly different orange on the right. I don’t think the pictures are great pictures, the red and orange are very different in person.

I think we could see Drysdale tomorrow but i wouldn't bet on it for MacT and Zegs. hopefully they are back later in the trip.
