I'm starting to wonder/worry about Couts. I said at the beginning of the year, this season for Couts is solely about staying healthyand getting his legs and timing back. So in that regard, it's been a success.

However, since ~game 25, both his scoring rates and analytics have slowly dropped. A potentially big indicator is that his actual on-ice performance is out performing his expected performance. This isn't always a problem - some players will always out perform their expected... But 1) Couts has never been that player, and 2) The difference between the offensive expected and actual is pretty significant.

This could just be Couts getting back into form, and this could just be a throw away season, but this could also be an indicator that Couts has begun a decline. I would love for him to finish the season strong and curtail my worry.
IIRC, Coots missed a practice right around that game 25 mark and from mid december on, there’s been several games where I thought just from the eye test he didn’t look great.

Wonder if he’s a bit banged up / fighting through some injuries.

Hopefully that’s all it is.

I already did the whole spiel last week about how hard it is to find 1Cs outside the top 5-10. But since 2011, what Flyers centers (besides Couturier and Giroux) have performed better than Frost over the last 12 months? That's not me saying Frost is that player -- my hope is he achieves consistency as an ice tilting 50-60 point center, which is hella valuable (and apparently more valuable than this center bereft team believes). But they currently have zero centers in the pipeline. And over a 13 year period they haven't acquired a better one, through the draft or free agency or trade.

"They'll find one!" Well, they haven't. And with the closest they've come, they're not "sold on" the player.

That was before. Now it is 2024. It is the future.

Why does a team in the playoffs need to rebuild?

Maybe there is more talent on hand, with the right coaching - than we thought.

I’m not sure.

They are playing hockey the way it’s meant to be played. The superstars are nice, but really - isn’t 4 lines of solid depth just as important? Konecny has shown he’s a top 20 player in the league.

If the PP improves with Michkov, and the goaltending holds… We might be cooking sooner than we thought.

No. Blatantly not. It is also important (see Edmonton and Toronto, who fail this test every year), but it is absolutely insufficient, if you don't also have gamebreaking talent who can just take over and win a series by themselves. The Blues' championship team might have gotten away with some second-tier talent and an all-time goalie heater, but go back through the Cup winners in the Cap era and I don't think you'll find another team that pulled it off without a megastar on the roster.

“What is a washed up Cam Atkinson’s purpose here and why does he play so much?”

“Your honor, I present Exhibit A.”

Sara’s actual wording in the article is a bit different than the tweet:

Couturier was pleasantly surprised with how involved Tortorella was in offseason moves to improve the locker room, such as the signings of Ryan Poehling and Garnet Hathaway. Atkinson said this is par for the Torts course and mentioned Tortorella has been involved in several of his contract negotiations and fought for him.

I don’t even know how to interpret this because I call bullshit that Tortorella had a list of names and was pouring over the data (maybe Hathaway he liked watching from afar). We do know he wanted 10 goal 4th liners.

The Atkinson contract remark refers to Columbus, but I have no doubt the face of the organization was instrumental in Tippett’s 8 year deal. He is the most powerful coach in the league. But a coach is too biased and cap ignorant and short term oriented to be inserting himself into contracts.
