I don't mind the money but 7 years is 2 years too many imo.

How do you figure, if he's 25 now? I'd think those back end years are exactly what we dream of for a franchise goalie. It's the back end years we nailed on deals like Marchy, Bergy, Krejci etc. You want the guy getting 7M when his peers are getting 11M in 2030.

We also gotta remember Sway has very low mileage right now, by any standard. He's honestly barely played.

Everyone called me pretty crazy two months ago saying a goalie trade was inevitable. Not so crazy now :naughty:

I don't fully get how Ottawa does it though. Do they give us Korpisalo at 50% retained, as our 2M backup? They gotta send him somewhere, they can't have 11.75M in goalies. Pinto certainly a logical piece to bring back.
Pinto and Kastellic would be a nice return. If there is a prospect flip I like Boucher for the Sens.

Man I do not love that contract. I know it’s not 100% confirmed yet, but it just seems like a lot.

And I like him quite a bit.
It is the term that I don't like. Love Sway and want him here his whole career but I think it is a mistake to give a goalie this kind of deal

I'm happy committing to Sway long term.

Remember when the Canucks had Luongo and Schneider and as soon as Schneider was ready to take over as a full time starter they decided to commit to Luongo and traded him to New Jersey, but like a year later Luongo decided he was upset and forced a trade and Vancouver went into a death spiral with no #1 goalie? We don't want to repeat that.

Nobody minds 6M. So I guess the issue is always over 1M more. Was the same with Pasta. We mostly got bent out of shape for 1M.
The money is whatever with me. The term is what gives me pause. That is a major commitment to any player. They are seriously gambling that his best years are ahead of him.

As much as I like the player, I don’t know if he’s quite earned this level of deal yet.

I think you can comit longterm to Sway by giving him the $7mil but at a max of 6 years. Money isn't my issue. I cannot get behind anything more than 6 years and even then I have some reservation.

I wouldn't be suprised if the Sens bought out Korpisalo, I know it's only the 1st year of his contract but he has been really bad. The Sens new owner is a competitive guy and knows they need a serious uograde in nets next year to have any chance at the playoffs.

What Swayman has going for him in terms of making that commitment in dollars and years:

1) Incredible competitor. Even by goalie standards, high end in terms of mental side. Never satisfied with where his game is at.

2) You'll never run into issues with him that affect a locker room etc. Won't be the kind to demand a trade

3) Loves it in Boston

4) Amazing teammate

5) Wants to win even more than wants to be rich

6) Has always received top notch coaching (juniors and here)

To me it's like a Bergeron situation. You BEG to invest in these types long term

Sorokin got 8 years. And he’s 28 now. It’s not out of place to give that term and in fact Sway would have every right to demand it and say no to 5-6 years.

$7M is pretty much what was speculated here. That said, regardless, that's big money for a goaltender who hasn't exceeded 41 games played in a season.
