Boston Bruins 2023-24 Roster and Salary Cap Discussion VII

As others have said, this is a gift if you look closely.

We had no obvious way to find out what Swayman was ready for big picture. Now we are being handed an amazing opportunity to see that (and see what his next deal is worth). He's about to take the Knights, Devils, Avs, Jets and Canes right to the face over the next two weeks. Bussi will get the Habs, Blues, and Sens.

Be nice to have Carlo and Forbort back for that stretch though, would do wonders to settle things down in front of these young goalies.

If Sweeney is gifted all that cap space by a long term injury, I don't think he has to decide till the week of the deadline. By then I think we might be closer to 5th in the conference, and I think he won't struggle to stand pat beyond bringing in someone who can win a FO and throw a big hit here or there. All of this is house money this year.

It would be kind of a disaster for next years plans if Linus doesn't come back and prove he is healthy this season. Ullmark going from a valuable offseason asset to an asset that might be viewed closer to a cap dump f***s things up.

On the flip side, getting to see if Swayman can actually handle a true #1 work load is good.

Or course if he succeeds if means he will be able to squeeze more out of the Bruins. Which could lead us down a dark Sinden-like path.

Well it depends what Linus injury is. Goalies get hurt, and there is a long history of recovery, time it will take etc,

It is highly unlikely he becomes a cap dump type of player. But it could impact his value a bit for sure.

It is highly unlikely, but if he doesn’t play again this year the needle moves a lot ans that points to something serious. Obviously, this is all speculation on an unknown injury so it’s moot.

I was thinking exactly this. Its going to look like bad asset management if Ullmark is out for a while after not trading him after his Vezina. Not something you can predict, but sucks if it hurts his value considering this offseason it was probably at his highest.

On the other hand, 5 mil of LTIR, Sway with a full workload, and seeing what Bussi/Dipietro have at the NHL level would be interesting.

I just don't trust his GF% numbers to continue to beat out the horrendous Corsi, Shot, and Scoring Chance numbers. He is just too often outclassed against top competition. I'm not surprised he is scoring in a bigger role in the slightest. Just think the Bruins end up giving up a lot against top competition right now.
Starting 70% of his shifts in the D zone tends to destroy one's corsi. If anything, I am pretty impressed he is putting up these numbers despite the tougher match-ups and offensive disadvantage of starting in his own end all game.

As long as the injury isn't a major concern, they should receive decent to very good return.

You can argue it a lot of different ways, but teams still value superior goaltending.

small positive of the Ullmark injury is you get to test run Sway as the true #1 for a little bit. See how he handles not having every other game off.

Would absolutely love it. I was iffy on it before, but yeah, I'd go right after this guy.

The bottom 6 can use some scumbag on the team. He would fit like a glove on the 4th line. Give me some Perry and Marchand and lets have some fun.

We just lost a bottom 6 player for off-ice issues pertaining to alcohol. Do you really want to roll that dice again with Perry?

I see the need, I just don't think this is the guy.
I mean, he happened to have these issues after signing here.

Corey Perry would be a fantastic add to this 4th line and would likely come cheap. He's more skilled than our entire 4th line put together.

Experienced.
Cup champion.
Skilled shit disturber.

I'm down for it.

I would like to add Perry-except Beecher or Merk would probably render him ineffective. Maybe Merk could do the job. They need serious center help ASAP. Whether it is a bottom six center, or a top six center, or both, is up to Sweeney.

He has taken 152 faceoffs in the offensive zone, 162 in the neutral zone and 217 in his own zone. The scale is being held down against him, but it’s a far cry from 70%. He also has been given a pair in Marchand and DeBrusk that were part of one of the most dominant two way lines in hockey last year. It is, of course, unfair to compare Coyle to Bergeron. But while Coyle has gotten more points with a bigger role, that line has just seen a big downgrade in its two way effectiveness. Coyle is a good player being asked to go against the best of the best, and he just doesn’t have enough game to win those battles on a consistent basis. Neither does Geekie, neither does Zacha.

I also would give Perry a chance. He had a great season until the termination and you know that he will do anything to not end his career like that. So I absolutely would expect him to behave like a monk. The team also has a deeply need for a player like Perry on the fourth line as the fourth line right now is lacking some snarl, veteran experience and pushback. Go for Perry!

Hockey Reference has Coyle's OZs% at 33.4. Not exactly sure how that metric is measured...but it stands out, not only on the Bruins, but across the league for a forward in the top 6. Anyway, not suggesting Coyle is an All Star, but the team is winning with him in the top C slot.

When zone starts are calculated, neutral zone starts are excluded.
