Laval Rocket: 2023-24 Laval Rocket Thread

More injuries in Laval: Trudeau and Parker-Jones.

Habs will have to send players down the way things are going...

It'll be more guys from 3R will be called up rather than Habs send guys down. On D to replace Trudeau, there are Ortiz, Laaouan & Tourigny on AHL deals. And at forward, there are Novak (who was sent back down), Yaremko (who was sent back down earlier today) and Voyer.

I won't criticize a win but I think it's interesting the guys Houle doesn't like like pot a goal and still not get ice time. I'd rather send Mysak or Kidney to the ECHL for a bit than keep getting fourth line minutes while AHL grinders play ahead of them.

Also I wonder why tobie bisson is in Laval and Tourigny has to play in the ECHL. Maybe management expected more injuries so they got extra depth this year? It feels like we have three more dmen than we need. Luckily the AHL has a vet limit or a few guys would never get in the lineup.

The bolded part is totally inaccurate. Rockets could even add veterans without sitting those they have if they wanted. Andersson is veteran status exempt. Only Maillet and Bourque are. Stephens is the third one, but he has played less than 320 games, which gives him a different veteran status as he still counts within a certain development threshold.

I believe Andersson is also a 261-320 pro game player like Stephens.

However, he is exempt from vet status because he was still 24 on July 1st 2023. Only 25 and olders are subject to this rule.

Even so it's fairly clear scratching some of them is a direct order from above. Beaudin goes from top PP and heavy minutes to scratched every other game. Guys like Mysak and kidney sit just as much without the good minutes when they do play

It's amazing that the organization is squandering prospects like Mysak and Kidney.

I'll admit I don't know squat about the AHL, but I was under the impression that Laval would be a powerhouse this year. Was I badly misinformed, or are they really disappointing?

They have been a tire fire defensively.

Some are blaming the coach, some are blaming the D, some are blaming the goalies.

9th in the AHL for GF.
32nd in the AHL for GA.

In the 3 games they have points:
One had the goalie as the first star.
One was Roy 5 pts night.
One had the goalie as the 2nd star.

Too many raw rookies. Guys like Belzile, Richard, Teasdale, Schuneman, Dello, Abandonnato and Pierrick Dubé were let go on the UFA market. Primeau is stocked in MTL. Huge holes to fill for kids like Roy, Kidney, Farrell, Dobes, Mailloux & cie.

I might see the glass half full, but I love that the Rocket (real Habs prospects) and the Habs are becoming good at 5vs5 or scoring goal, something we havent seen too often lately if I am not mistaken.

They are the 4th youngest team in the AHL I believe, but the goaltending has been bad, the defense has been bad, just way too many turnovers and breakdowns. It's been some of the worst defensive play I have seen from our AHL team.

At the start of every year people that don’t watch the AHL announce that our team will be a powerhouse and then reality hits.

A lot of young players (that need to get stronger), smallish team especially for the forwards and no veteran goalie. Their current record is not indicative of what they can do but still making the playoffs would be a nice accomplishment (and far from a done deal).

At the start of the season, a majority (I included) thought that the Rocket finally had an interesting team that should perform in the AHL (and with rookies with potential)
After 10 games, the Rocket is last in the league and has granted the most goals against. Are we too enthusiastic about Canadian prospects or there are other explanations for these bad performances?

Most of us knew that the team would struggle to win games especially early with such a young team. Top AHL teams are usually veteran laden and rarely have many good NHL prospects.

Houle is attempting to implement MSL's system with a very young team which is extremely difficult due to MSL's system being very dependant on players making the correct reads.

This start was fairly predictable.

Things take time, development is often a long process. So far it's mostly been the rookies that have been their best players so it's mostly going well. I am shocked that Dobes is struggling but he has been put in some tough spots, that said he has to be better. I thought he would be very good so perhaps I was wrong as I do struggle with goalies.

Mailloux I would like to see better from him but I also expected him to struggle a lot so I'm not surprised but we'll see how much can he progress or not as the season goes on. You can see some flashes for sure and think boy if he ever figures the rest out, you could have something special on your hands there. That said we'll see how bright he is, if he can continue to make major strides even if it takes 2-3 years, it's worth the risk to see if it pays off.

Roy and Farrell have mostly been their best players, Farrell has struggled more early on but lately (didn't see the last game or 2 of the last 3) but he was looking better and better. Both have shown many good things and some things they need to work on, which is why it's good they are in the AHL. If they can get quicker, stronger lower body should help skating/speed. So smart and skilled, going to be so interesting to see how this pans out.

Struble has been their best D so once again the rookies are among our best players. Certainly plays a power game, he hasn't been as physical this season as he was in his few games at the end of last season but that is smart as he does have a temper so he needs to stay focused as you need him on the ice not in the box. Hope they don't rush him, let him keep building off this for now.

Heineman it sucks he got injured with another concussion so you start to wonder about him as he does play a physical brand.

Norlinder and Trudeau have been big disappointments, I really thought Norlinder would take a big step this year but I also wanted him to get traded as it's clear Houle is no fan and I can see why. We'll see though, perhaps things start to settle down at some point for them.

Kidney I like the playmaking but I have had my doubts about him with his frame, not being overly quick, strong. He's looked ok on the bottom lines, they just moved him up so we'll see. I like him more then Mysak but I was never too big of a fan of his.
