Prospect Highlight: Sam Colangelo

Prospect Highlight, Colangelo.png

Age = 22
Height = 6'2
Weight = 209 lbs
Position = RW
Shoots = Right
Drafted: = 2020, Rd 2 (36th Overall)

During the 2018-2021 drafts, Anaheim dipped often into the US High Schools, USHL, and US NDTP players. In 2018, the Ducks snatched up LW McLaughling in the 3rd round, RW Perbix in the 4th, and G Durny in the 5th. The following draft, Zegras headline the group in the 1st round, LD/RD LaCombe in the 2nd, LD Thrun in the 4th, C Janicke in the 5th, and RD Francis in the 6th. For the 2020 draft, RW Colangelo went in the 2nd round and RD Moore in the 3rd. Finally, the last draft year of selecting two or more in the draft from this set was in the 2021 draft with winger Pastujov in the 3rd round and C Kukkonen in the 6th.

Colangelo was generating hype in this draft season as he finished third in team scoring with 68 points for the Chicago Steel. That team had several players who were drafted in the 2020 and 2021 draft such as 2021, 1st overall pick D Power, as well as forwards Brisson, Farrell, Coronato, Samoskevich and Fontaine. Central Scouting's 2020 final ranking for NA skaters had Brisson at 20th and Colangelo at 31st. Anaheim took the gamble at pick 36.

Sam's collegiate career had a couple of lumps, but the gamble looks like it's paying off for the Ducks at the moment - Anaheim still needs to sign the young man. His injury in his freshman year truly disguised Colangelo's talent. Although his junior year was a step back, Sam was still productive on the scoresheet. A big reason why his junior year did not take another step forward was because the coaching staff separated him from his linemates from his sophomore season. There was great hype about the trio staying together and reaching new heights, but it was not so.

The step back in his junior year could be seen as Colangelo being held down. Sam had thought about turning pro after his junior season, but wanted to improve his game. During the 2023 summer Dev camp in Anaheim, Colangelo looked like he was a man on a mission as he was very noticeable on the ice in goal scoring and tenacity. The future Western Michigan Bronco had a well laid plan in place to improve his stock when his junior season ended. Here are some article excerpts on Colangelo from Medium:

Colangelo considered turning pro after the 2022–23 season, but ultimately decided to play another year of college was the right choice. One thing was clear to him, though. His time at Northeastern was done.
Western Michigan head coach Pat Ferschweiler had seen him play when he was a coach for Team USA at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in 2018, so there was already a level of familiarity between the two.
“I’m a guy who likes to shoot the puck and likes to score goals,” he said. “When you see (Western Michigan’s history) — their goals per game is in the top five every season that Coach Ferschweiler has been here — obviously, that’s a testament to the players that they’ve had, but also the coaching staff and what they’re doing. That doesn’t happen by accident.”

Currently, as of Feb 13th, with 19 goals on the season so far, Colangelo ranks seventh in the NCAA is goal scoring. The top goal scorers in the NCAA are fellow Ducks prospect Cutter Gauthier and projected #1 overall 2024 draft prospect Macklin Celebrini with 23 goals.

That is Colangelo's third NCHC "Forward of the Week" recognition, as per the Rink Live. The talent was always there. Staying in college and transferring to a program designed to help Colangelo succeed as a scorer is going to pay him dividends into the near and, hopefully, far future.

With the turnover the Ducks will have after this season at forward with the presumed losses of Rico and Silf, there exists a path to the NHL. Conflate that with the need for goal scorers at the NHL level, then the path to the NHL becomes closer in reach. Let us hope Verbeek is able to help Colangelo shine with the Ducks' organization.

how has perreault looked in SD? feels like time might be running out for him

From reports by members of this board, Perreault's overall game has shown improvement this year. His scoring rate is at 0.72 pts/gp, which ranks 6th in team scoring rate. Regenda, with a 0.77 pts/gp, is the only forward prospect ahead of Perreault in scoring rate. The problem is that Perreault isn't on the ice often enough due to injuries. Perreault has participated in only 25 games out of a possible 43 games currently this season.

Perreault
2020-21, 18 yrs old: 27 games out of 44 games
2021-22, 19 yrs old: 55 games out of 68 games (he was called up for one NHL game)
2022-23, 20 yrs old: 48 games out of 72 games
2023-24, 21 yrs old: 25 games out of 43 games (he just returned from injury in the last game)

Perreault still has another year on his ELC. The talent and development are there, but his body is not cooperating with him on the ice. If Perreault could only stay mostly healthy, like in 2021-22, then he would be carrying far more promise.

Hopefully he can stay healthy and show development for the rest of the season. He's another guy I think has the potential to be a good "3rd wheel" player. We have 5 strong/potentially strong offensive forwards in Carlsson, Zegras, Terry, McTavish, Gauthier already. We just need to fill in around them. Ideally someone develops into a strong "#2" for a line and we can fill in with good complimentary players around them... there are several in the system that could be that guy. Perrault, Tracey, Colangelo, Gaucher, Myatovic, Hvidson could be one of those guys.

He was turning it on before his most recent injury. I've only skimmed the couple (one?) game since he returned but he wasn't visible.

Perreault's got speed to his game, which already gives him a leg up in talent. I think he can develop into our next Vatrano, but hope he plays better 5v5 defense. Like Vatrano, it might take some time to get where he is.

Perrault isn't going to be a bottom six guy. He's going to have to score a lot to get a look in the top six. I don't see it.
Hes 1 of the guys i am interested to see with the big club, because he seems more of a compliment type player... and i think he could find a home next to a guy like Carlsson/Zegras in the NHL.

This an example of the things Ducks should be trying for the rest of the year. Don't know if he can play in an NHL top 6, but pretty sure he isn't going to be on a checking line in the bottom 6. I already know that Jones, Henrique, or Strome aren't top 6'ers when Ducks are competitive.
