Prospects Update, Dec 17: Juniors

Dec 17, Juniors.png

  • Five WJC Participants
    • Canada: D Luneau, D Warren
    • USA: C Terrance
    • Swiss: D Dionicio
    • Czechia: D Port
It's a pretty telling thing that we have 4D and 1F going to the WJC. We need more talented scoring forwards with participating countries.

- Pitre: 1g + 2a in three games
- Smith: 1g and +2 rating in three games
- Hvidston: 1g + 2a in three games
- Sidorov: 3g + 1a in two games

Prospect Update, Dec 17: Europe and NHL

Dec 17, Europe.png

- Buteyets played 2 games; Sv% dipped down .006% and GAA up 0.15. That's still very good!

- Clara played 2 games; Sv% crept up a smidge to 0.002% and GAA dropped to 0.07. He's trying to get back to over 0.900 Sv%.

Dec 17, NHL.png

- Minty leads the team in assists and leads in assists for the Calder participants. He added 3 assists in three games.

- Carlsson added an assist in two games played.

- LaCombe finally earned an assist in three games played. It was a beautiful cross-ice laser to Killorn for an easy, open net, backdoor tap in.

- Dostal played in two games, started one and filled in for Gibby in the third period for a team win. He incrementally improved his stats. Baby steps are good now that November is behind him.

Prospect Update, Dec 17: AHL and ECHL

Dec 17, AHL ECHL.png

The team only played one game this past week. They lost 1-3, with one of those being an empty netter. Tracey scored the lone Gulls goal while Gaucher and Caulfield earned the assists.

Since Tracey has returned from injury, he's been playing on the third line with Gaucher and Caulfield for the past seven games.

Past 7 games: Tracey-Gaucher-Caulfield, 3rd line
- Tracey: 4g + 4a = 8 pts, +6 rating
- Gaucher: 3g + 3a = 6 pts,+5 rating
- Caulfield: 2g + 5a = 7 pts, +4 rating

Before being a part of this line
- Tracey: 10 games, 1g + 1a = 2 pts, and -4 rating
- Gaucher: 16 games, 2g + 2a = 4 pts, and -4 rating
- Caulfield: 16 games, 3g + 0a = 3 pts, and -4 rating

Do we know who Luneau's partner will be?

Based on practice lines tweeted out over the weekend looked like with Furlong on the "2nd pairing".

For those more in tune with the US WJC team, it seems like Terrance was a surprise selection. Everything I read leading up to roster selection seemed like he was the odd man out. Still seems like he's just there to be an extra, but does anyone have more insight into that?

"Luneau looked a cut above all week in practice and in the red-white scrimmage. It was impressive. His skating looks so comfortable, flexible and smoothed out and it’s nice to see that his knee no longer appears to bother him. In battle drills and small-area competitions, he was pushing past opposing players with ease and controlling play. He’s going to be a horse for this team and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him push 25-30 minutes when the games matter."

I'm really not surprised, Luneau looked fast among NHL competition, he'll feast in this tournament

I expect him to be Canada's most important player. It's not a juggernaut of a team, the goaltending may be suspect unless one of the three makes themselves into a story. A lot will be riding on the strong defense group and he be "the guy" back there.

It will be interesting to see how Warren is utilized and if he can carve out a role. The way these tournaments are typically officiated, doesn't necessarily lend well to his style of play.

Elite Prospects left him out of top 100 prospects. Good chance to turn some heads, if NHL stint didn't already did that :)

Shoot a lot of places slept on luneau…. I mean we skipped him in the 2nd round technically .

Hutson/zellweger size was an issue…. I get the injury but I feel like he was still a pretty obvious 1st round talent

Luneau's injury affected his on-ice production and skating speed.

  • D+0 Season, 2022 draft
    • D Korchinski: 67 games, 65 points
    • D Mintyukov: 67 games, 62 points
    • D Matechuk: 63 games, 64 points
    • ...
    • D Luneau: 63 games, 43 points

Luneau was part of that offensive-D grouping in Central Scouting's pre-lim ratings in the first round.

Central Scouting, North America 2022 draft rating/ranking for Luneau
- Summer/Pre-lim: A rating (1st round projection)
- Mid-term ranking: 10th
- Final ranking: 24th

So, no, it's not "pretty obvious" that Luneau was a 1st round talent in his D+0 season due to his knee. We took a gamble that his knee would eventually become more functional. We won a gamble, but his skating still isn't as explosive as it was before his knee surgery. The Ducks have been working on Luneau's first few steps to become more explosive this year.

Several teams with multiple 2nd round picks passed Luneau up, including us. And we're the standard at drafting defensemen!

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ducks didn’t bother drafting him earlier because they figured he would drop.

They did the same thing with Josh Mahura. Mahura dropped in rankings because of an injury.

My recollection of articles at the time was that the Ducks took Warren first because he was the last of the very large defensemen in the draft that that level of play, and the Ducks wanted a player of his size to beef up their defense. I could be wrong on this since my memory is far from perfect.

Yup. The org was eyeballing the big, stay-at-home d-men and Warren was the last of that tier group. That made sense considering we drafted an OFD at 10th overall with Mintyukov.

DFD tier group
18th. Bichsel
21st. Pickering
29th. Lamoureux
37th. Chesley
42nd. Warren
