I don't comprehend this.
Under Murray, his late risers are often "boom or bust" picks. Fortunately, we're more boom with selecting defense and goalies. Remember how the team was made fun of when we drafted Lindholm 6th overall in the 2012 draft? We drafted a Tour de France guy due to having the best endurance on the bike at their combine. A year before, Murray's scouts were begging for Murray trade back into the 2011 draft in the 6th round to nab Josh Manson.
Fast forward a bit, we went late risers (aka boom or bust) in 2016 in drafting both LW Max Jones and C Sam Steel. Those prospects didn't boom. A few years later, we did it again with LW Tracey and high schooler LD LaCombe in 2019, both late risers. LaCombe is looking like a boom while Tracey is not so boom, boom. Perreault in 2020 was a top-10 offensive talent with abysmal work ethic on the defensive side that we picked up late in the first round; he was essentially like picking Arthur Kaliyev, but a year later - still a boom or bust prospect.
In 2021, the Ducks tripled up on late risers (boom or bust) in McTavish at 3rd overall, Zellweger in Rd 2, and we traded back into the 3rd round for D Hinds (similar situation as Manson).
Under new leadership, the Ducks still swung for the fences in the 2nd round of the 2022 draft in selecting D Luneau. Luneau was a top, first round prospect before the 2021-22 season, but knee surgery affected his game. No one knew if he would recover from it. Anaheim passed up on Luneau early in the 2nd round by drafting D Warren. Then we took a gamble on Luneau with our second 2nd round pick.
This past draft, the Ducks did something bold in drafting Carlsson over Fantilli. Over 95% of the scouting media thought there was a huge talent gap between Fantilli and Carlsson to the point where every report after the draft, we were constantly dinged for drafting Carlsson over Fantilli. We don't hear those talks anymore.
