I'm going to pop one point in on banning fighting: hardly anyone who plays/played hockey agrees with banning fighting, it serves a purpose.
There's lots of legitimately useful things we don't do anymore because we don't like their side effects. They don't let peewees fight either, are we mad about that?

I feel like people might just be confusing not allowing kids to fight with disapproving of fighting in professional hockey.

I don't like fighting because it's not entertaining to me. It was, at one point, but I've realized I like watching people skate fast and make nice passes and shots WAY more than I like seeing people punch faces. Given that pro hockey is entertainment, I'd be fine if fighting went away entirely.

That said, I understand why people in the game are good with it. I don't know that I agree with all of the reasoning and think there are better ways to police dirty play and to fire up your team, but I admit those better ways aren't perfect either.

However, the potential head injuries for kids are too great, and the power/compensation dynamics in youth leagues are not conducive to leaving fighting as an option. The risks vastly outweigh the rewards.

Yeah you might be right there at the end. For some reason I can't bold things on my phone, lol.

I haven't followed the story much, but are they banning fighting because of the age difference of some of the players there? The youngest players are what, 16 and the oldest are 20ish?

Not a mod or anything but, can we stay on topic please? With all due respect, I’m expecting to read more about how the prospects are playing, not a discussion about whether or not fighting should be allowed. That’s an entirely different subject.

It's a discussion based on something that JUST happened to one of our prospects. It's not really off topic at all.

He's just so... unique. A D doing thos things.
You can tell he grew up playing forward. Was only converted from Center to Defenseman a few years ago. He also played a few games on the Wing for Windsor whenever they needed extra bodies upfront.

But yeah. Definitely a unique player. You won't find many defenseman who can hit and fight like Dionicio yet still score the way he does. I don't know if he's ever gonna become an NHL player but if he does I think he's gonna be a very good one. Not sure I see him becoming a depth or fringe NHLer. Boom or bust type of prospect.

The type of player that I feel like we (as fans) always get angry at our team for not picking

I don't comprehend this.

Under Murray, his late risers are often "boom or bust" picks. Fortunately, we're more boom with selecting defense and goalies. Remember how the team was made fun of when we drafted Lindholm 6th overall in the 2012 draft? We drafted a Tour de France guy due to having the best endurance on the bike at their combine. A year before, Murray's scouts were begging for Murray trade back into the 2011 draft in the 6th round to nab Josh Manson.

Fast forward a bit, we went late risers (aka boom or bust) in 2016 in drafting both LW Max Jones and C Sam Steel. Those prospects didn't boom. A few years later, we did it again with LW Tracey and high schooler LD LaCombe in 2019, both late risers. LaCombe is looking like a boom while Tracey is not so boom, boom. Perreault in 2020 was a top-10 offensive talent with abysmal work ethic on the defensive side that we picked up late in the first round; he was essentially like picking Arthur Kaliyev, but a year later - still a boom or bust prospect.

In 2021, the Ducks tripled up on late risers (boom or bust) in McTavish at 3rd overall, Zellweger in Rd 2, and we traded back into the 3rd round for D Hinds (similar situation as Manson).

Under new leadership, the Ducks still swung for the fences in the 2nd round of the 2022 draft in selecting D Luneau. Luneau was a top, first round prospect before the 2021-22 season, but knee surgery affected his game. No one knew if he would recover from it. Anaheim passed up on Luneau early in the 2nd round by drafting D Warren. Then we took a gamble on Luneau with our second 2nd round pick.

This past draft, the Ducks did something bold in drafting Carlsson over Fantilli. Over 95% of the scouting media thought there was a huge talent gap between Fantilli and Carlsson to the point where every report after the draft, we were constantly dinged for drafting Carlsson over Fantilli. We don't hear those talks anymore.

your entire argument is built around late risers being boom or bust, which i disagree with.

regardless my point is that people get angry about taking "safe" picks like gaucher over other riskier players and act like we don't take boom or bust picks, but that rodwin is an interesting boom or bust player. it was just an observation, not sure it necessitated such a lengthy reply lol

Late risers are the epitome of boom or bust prospects because of the lack of consistency in their career production, where the upswing is recent. Jones, Steel, Tracey, and Perreault haven't boomed. The ones that have happen to be more boom are all defensemen. Dionicio is a 5th round pick, where most prospects are boom or bust, but usually bust.

Bruh, you cite one example of a safe pick. ONE. And one of the prospects we passed over is Snuggerud, who's profile is quite similar to Max Jones!

Anyhow, here are your own words that I was responding to:

The type of player that I feel like we (as fans) always get angry at our team for not picking [boom or bust prospects]

Do you use the word "always" when referring to one drafted prospect?
