It'll be interesting to see which prospect out of the 23 draft will make the most progress in their D+1 season. Considering most guys weren't on fans radars pre draft, it'll be good to get some better insight than stats and highlights this season on the new guys.

I had info and an inkling with our first four picks (Carlsson, Myatovic, Terrance, and Clara). I'm very interested in seeing how Myatovic produces this season.

Every pick after the 2nd round are all new to me. Sidorov reminds me of Pastujov, high-end scorer with skating issues. I'm hoping one of the three defensemen we drafted pans out in Simth, Dionicio, or Port. Plus side to them is there is no need to rush them as we're stacked defensively in talent.

One of the better descriptions of Carlsson that I've read, now that I've seen more of him.

One of the better descriptions of Carlsson that I've read, now that I've seen more of him.

To piggyback on the Carlsson description with respect to SHL defensive play, podcast Spittin' Chiclets had an interview with Carlsson before the draft. They hosts kept commentating how difficult it is to play in the SHL due to the defense implemented. There's rarely a 2v1 situation in the SHL. The defensive game is an underrated part of playing in the SHL for prospects.

In the podcast, Carlsson is aware of two things he needs to improve upon: 1) his top speed is fine, but he needs to improve his first three steps, 2) shoot more.

The video podcast is chaptered and you can skip to the Carlsson & Leonard interview. I have the video marked to start at their interview time.

Here's an offensive sequence from Game 2 of the rookie tourney against the Avs, courtesy of Derek Lee:

Nesterenko-Carlsson-Pitre
LaCombe-Luneau

I wished the video would have shown the previous 6-10 seconds showing how calm LaCombe was on the offensive boards and surrounded by 2 or 3 Avs to make a great pass to Carlsson. The video starts after that play.

There's so much goodness and support in this video.

Pitre was a puck hound down low with loads of hustle. Also, was able to spot LaCombe from behind the net and went around the net to give LaCombe a great scoring chance.

LaCombe's got great instincts and dove down early knowing Pitre would have possessions. Pitre looked like he was going to crash the net from behind the net and saw LaCombe creeping down. That's when Pitre changed his mind.

As LaCombe got his shot off, Carlsson magically appeared in front of the net for any potential rebound and Nestrenko skating down towards the backdoor. Luneau in the middle of the ice, prepared for whichever direction the puck would go and ready to defend.

Every Duck was moving, cylcing, and keeping the puck possession alive. All five touched the puck at least once in this shift and we got off two great shots on goal.

Carlsson wins more puck battles in a single shift than some Ducks did all season last year. Pitre's good at it too.

EP finished their prospect pool series and we ended up number two to Chicago.

My favorite part is that they did writeups on every prospect in each farm system they think has legitimate NHL potential, so some teams had 12 guys with actual writeups and the better systems around 16-17. We had 26. Here is the order they have just to compare to our poll:

Carlsson
Mintyukov
Zellweger
Dostal
Lacombe
Moore
Luneau
Gaucher
Warren
Pastujov
Hinds
Pitre
Clang
Nesterenko
Helleson
Perreault
Clara
Colangelo
Hvidston
Tracey
Dionicio
Port
Myatovic
Sidorov
Terrance

hahahaha so true!

Coincidently enough, Elite Prospects' scorecard of Carlsson denotes he does win a lot of puck battles, even more than Fantilli. Look at the OZ Retrievals/60 section. Also, look at the Boards-to-Middle Plays/60.

"Carlsson extends offensive possession," was one of the assessments a scout said about Carlsson in a video report and I completely agreed with it back when I saw it.

Extending offensive possession is one way Carlsson makes other players play better, which is what our scouting group commented about Carlsson after we drafted him.

This play reminded a lot of McTavish's play in the OHL, OHL playoffs, and CHL Memorial cup. Some posters would comment how McTavish does nothing, but he's scores a lot. Yet, if you watch the plays, McTavish is winning board battles and keeping the puck alive or while cycling around the ice to keep the puck in the OZ when he covers for a d-man at the point.

Carlsson and Mac do a lot of little things that go unnoticed that benefit the team on the ice.

I believe that’s more than any other team too, Philly has 20, CBJ has 18, and Chi seems to be second with 24, but here’s the little cherry on top.

“This article goes 26 players deep, but that’s not even all of the intriguing NHL talent in the organization” - Mitch Brown

I assume this is in reference to guys like Kukkonen, Buteyets, Groulx, Callow, Alexander, Smith, and King. So presumably they see some potential in that group as well.
