No QO to Shaw is a little surprising, but with him blowing out his knee again I don't see much interest in him from the rest of the league.

Steel not getting a QO isn't surprising. He had too good of a season (statswise) and is arbitration eligible. He's not that good and not worth the headache of trying to make a higher than league min contract work.

AHL goaltending will be interesting with both Jones and McIntyre re-signed, and Wallstedt under contract.

Probably due to his knee, think they can get him cheaper is my guess

Quite the list of non-tendered RFAs around the league, Shaws just one of many. McLeod is a beast on face-offs, very surprised NJD didn't qualify him. If Reaves goes and Brackett influenced the Gadjovich pick in Vancouver I could see him being a target. Bastian, Geekie, Fischer, plenty of interesting ones.

Anyone watch Christian Fischer? Worth a flyer on for cheap??

Probably at under 1M. Pretty standard 4th line energy guy, not bad, nothing to write about. He's got some size and physicality though so that would land him ahead of guys like Shaw or Steel.

That’s what I was thinking. If he is willing to sit. League minimum he wouldn’t be terrible for a 4th liner.

I'm not even sure he'd have to sit. I'd be fine with him as an every day player. I'd rather have him than Reaves.

Didn’t mean sit, auto correct got me… I meant if he is willing to sign for league minimum.

I could see him getting up to 1.5 on a 2-3 year deal to be honest, not sure we can afford that, but we'll see. I'd have interest if I were Guerin though

I wonder if they are hedging bets a bit about a Gus Bus holdout and/or assume there will be more injuries than normal with an aging Fleury. Wallstedt will probably get a couple NHL games, and we all know that Jones as done fine physically and mentally as an ECHL goalie.

Josh Bailey is a guy I see GMBG going after because they are former teammates.

They don't want to have to carry him on LTIR as they won't be able to send him to the minors on an NHL deal.

I hope they throw him a bone and atleast give him an AHL deal worth a 100k or 2.

I don't see him being on LTIR as being a big deal. MN will be right up against the cap anyways so it's not like they'll be accumulating meaningful cap space. He can also still be sent to the AHL, he'll just have to pass though waivers (like he's done the last 2 seasons).

Shaw is a really just another tweener player. My guess is he was offered a ~league min 2-way contract (same as Mermis, McIntyre, Jones, and Swaney just got) and declined it because it wasn't a 1-way deal. Remember he was given the "C" last year in Iowa (before he forced his way onto the NHL team).

No. Shaw was injured on an NHL roster in a non recall status(had played more than 10 games). He can not be sent to the AHL or bought out until healthy. For that matter, anyone injured at the end of training camp stays in the NHL until healthy. Section 13.6 of the CBA if you'd care to check.

He wasn't offered a QO, because he'd immediately accept the 800k and collect it while rehabbing.

LTIR situation isn't the end of the world, but with the penny punching we will need to do, starting the season at 0 capspace utilizing ltir is less than ideal with an 800k salary.

Players don't get paid until the season starts and even then it's a daily rate. The Wild will be so cap tight that the extra LTIR space to start the season wouldn't be a bad thing and they can have a 22 man roster instead of a 21.

I don't care that they didn't QO him. Like I said he's a tweener, and they have plenty more of those to fill the roster spot.

The problem with LTIRing Shaw, is his cap hit is so small.

There is a good article that I read a few years back that explains it better than I can a few beers deep, but the tl/Dr version is it makes day to day injuries more complictaed and can force you to put players who would miss a game or two on ltir and out 10 days. If it was a 3 or 4 million hit, it would actually be more palatable. I'll see if I can find it.

Its not insurmountable, but it's just a headache given how tight we are on the cap and 100% of the reason we didn't QO him.

Saw no QO to Sam Steel. I thought he did well for you guys? Any feedback?
Good...for him. He was a waiver pickup. Fast, knows how to play(sort of), has a touch of skill, but is one of the most vanilla players you'll ever see. Effort isn't lacking, just is a fringe NHL'er, and at this point, thinking that he is anything else is kind of fanciful.

Having said that, Freddy Gaudreau is an example of a late bloomer who is a solid bottom sixer.

Everything went right for ~20 games and then his hands turned to granite for a couple games(2 missed empty nets and overskated a puck on the boards that ended up as a goal against) and he was removed from the top-line. He's a decent skater and has a good brain for the game but his hands aren't always going and even when they are he's not great. Not worth going to arbitration with.

I think they are trying to do right by Shaw, but not at the expense of the team. I like him, and wish him the best, but think that he is very replaceable. Wish we could bottle his desire.

He was just okay. MN has/had a lot of small players that are the same or better than him on the team and more in the system behind him.

MN doesn't have the cap space to give him more than a league min contract, and he put up enough points to get a little more than that (Donato range is where I have him).
