He definitely fills the missing role of "NHL caliber defenseman" we don't have 6 of those, take the free one please
What do we need six for? The top four is Walman-Ceci and Ferraro-Liljegren. That’s fine for now and Fabbro doesn’t make it better. While Rutta sucks, Fabbro doesn’t seem any better. If the Preds are okay with letting him go for free, we can wait for the off-season to bring him in after some contracts expire.

I think Fabbro is worth a claim but it’s crazy to think the Sharks will actually have too many RD after what the team looked like in July.

Thompson has looked good but he is still really young and he can be sent down to join the Cuda.

Walman - Ceci
Ferraro - Fabbro
Thrun - Liljegren
Rutta

If Muk keeps playing better than send Thrun down. Rutta can rotate in with Fabbro and Liljegren. The Cuda will have a very good D especially when Carlsson comes back.

You need NHL players on your bottom pair as well, Ferraro, Rutta and Thrun are a drag on every forward they share a shift with, we need to be setting our young forwards up for success and having actual NHL players who can advance the puck to them will put them in a far better position to succeed than what they are dealing with right now

At this point, Fabbro is definitely a better choice than Rutta, who provides literally nothing

This.

Fabbro has shown flashes of brilliance in the past and Nashville always mismanaged their prospects.

I wouldn't say that. They developed Forsberg and Evangelista is coming along nicely. Developing defenseman has been one of their strongest suits. It could be a personality clash with regards to Fabbro because he has been decent to good throughout his Preds career.

We know Trotz isn't shy about sending out personalities he clashes with.

They draft guys, and when they are ready for more minutes and responsibilities, they then put roadblocks in their way.

Evangelista and Tomasino should be getting time in the top 6

I think Thompson deserves to continue to get at least semi-regular action and I'd say the acquisition of Fabbro would've been the death knell for that. So I'm not too bothered by this.

We’re a rebuilding team where we have no developing young forwards in the bottom six. They’re trying to develop Thrun on the bottom pairing. They don’t need more answers there when they’re not trying to win and Fabbro isn’t going to change anything there. And since we probably get anything in a trade and his contract expires after the season, there’s no reason to claim him. Now if we clear out some of that this off-season and he’s available then they should get him.

I agree but I don’t think it’ll help anything to be worth it. It’ll keep Thompson from getting time and he’s got future potential to a rebuild. Fabbro doesn’t.

Yeah, I think as I was trying to build the lineup I couldn’t help but think it’s a bummer for Thompson to not keep getting a chance to grow here which is ultimately the team’s job this season.

My hope is a top 4 of Muhk, Ceci, Walman, Liljegren with Ferraro-Thompson in the bottom pairing is where we end up and I think that’s actually pretty good

Will Smith has spent half of his season in the bottom-6, what are you talking about?

If they're trying to develop Thrun that's another problem because there's nothing there to develop, his ceiling is an #7D, he doesn't have any tools that demonstrate the ability to be an everyday D man

He did but he isn’t now. I just don’t see the value in claiming him. If we’re replacing Rutta in the lineup, it should be for Thompson.

He literally still is

He isn't playing today, developmental scratch, last game he was the 3C

Celebrini
Wennberg
Smith
Sturm

His most recent NHL action is in the bottom 6

And was practicing in the top six. Do you really think Fabbro is the difference in Smith’s development when he is on the 3rd line with Goodrow, Kunin, and two of Ferraro, Rutta, Thompson, and Thrun? I don’t. Smith will just be stuck with too many players lacking talent for Fabbro’s claim to matter towards his development.

So Columbus now has on their RD depth chart:

Provorov
Severson
Jiricek
Fabbro
Carson Cuelemans

I hope Fabbro impresses so much that they give him a deal and they find one of their d prospects expendable and trade Jiricek/Ceulemans to us!!!

He served as the placeholder for Granlund who was absent from practice, he was "practicing in the top 6" as much as Givani Smith does when he serves as a placeholder for an everyday player nursing an injury, Will Smith has been our #3 for weeks now

And what he plays with is not a Fabbro away from the next stage in his development. He will be fine developing with what’s there.

I’d say no to claiming Fabbro. I’d think about signing him in the off-season but I don’t think he has rental value and he’s not filling some needed role.
I guess it depends on whether the Sharks consider him a significant upgrade to Ruuta and Thompson

I think Thompson is a better guy to use over Rutta with Thrun. Fabbro isn’t some top four guy that is being given away. He’s a dime a dozen fringe nhl defenseman. We got plenty of that.
