I don’t know if monitor is the right word but I have paid attention to deadline trades for decades. I expect Ceci to get more than a 2nd too.
After we saw Ceci's trade value in the summer, even with the bonus of being easier to fit under the cap for other teams at the deadline, even a 2nd would be great. I mean, he's been fine with the Sharks, but certainly not good enough to get the loins of other GMs stirring too much.

I am curious to know the reason Grier went after Kovalenko.
I'd guess the combination of his KHL numbers, play-style, and the fact that he was attainable as an add-on in such a deal. He certainly has a better chance at being a positive asset for the Sharks than another mid-to-low round draft pick, if that was the alternative.

So I thought I'd post something I thought might be interesting. As a lot of you know I had to take a few years off from hockey for a variety of reasons (health being one, my stress level was literally killing me) but I'm doing much better now and I got my network setup again so I can actually watch most Sharks games again (it's tough in Reno, Sharks, Kings, and Knights are all blacked out and only the Knights are actually available on local cable).

So it's been an adjustment for me going from the end of the Thornton era to the rebuild era. I've watched enough of this season now that I feel like I can comment somewhat knowledgeably on the situation and here are my major take aways:

1) It's an entirely different team, in mostly good ways. It's strange being fine with losing games, and always being expected to lose after so many years of winning, but I think it's also good because I feel like it wipes away some of the really ugly stuff like the reverse sweep and the cup finals loss. While we will always have those things in the back of our minds as Sharks fans, it feels like a long time ago and irrelevant now.
2) I absolutely miss a few guys and feel like we let them down. Pavelski, Couture, even Karlsson somewhat. At the same time, as much as I loved Big Joe I do think in the end he was a part of the culture that was just not capable of getting it done. The blame isn't all on him, but I think he was part of a group of guys we loved but also kept us from winning the cup. Might just be hindsight, but I really see this team as entirely new and I'm glad there isn't much overlap culture wise.
3) Celebrini is incredible. Every time I watch him I feel like he's a moment or two from really "figuring it out" and dominating (more than he is already). He's going to be special.
4) It's strange looking at our roster and thinking "Oof, we have a lot of holes" but then realizing that we have this amazing prospect pool that is the envy of the league and most of those holes are already earmarked for someone already in the system, not someone we need to trade for.
5) Mike Grier has been phenomenal and I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better job than he has.

Anyway, I feel kind of like a time traveler who jumped straight over the rebuild from the old team to the new team. I feel like Grier has done everything right, that it is just a matter of time before we are tearing the league up. I also used to stay out of the prospect discussions somewhat because I always had this gut feeling most of them wouldn't pan out or at least wouldn't pan out to the level that was expected of them. I used to feel like we got lucky with guys like Pavelski and Hertl even, not that it was necessarily shrewd drafting. I don't, at least so far feel that way now, I feel like this is an organization that absolutely knows what they are doing and there is mostly great things ahead, not more disappointment.

Basically I'm more than optimistic, I honestly believe the Sharks have turned a corner and we can put all that crap in the past finally. I think Celebrini is going to be the center of a cup winning team in the next decade. I'd be shocked if that doesn't happen.

I'm very curious to see how Askarov's minutes will play out. A few things to consider:

*First off, does Grier consider Georgiev an NHL goalie, and either way can he make to Raleigh in time for tomorrow's game?
*Secondly Colorado just flew out from NJ last night- fun travel for Georgiev.
Similarly, Sharks have 24 hours to to call up Askarov and get him to Raleigh.
*10 more Games in December- mostly good teams
*14 games in January (including two against NSH)- it's a relatively soft month after the TBL, NJD, Vegas start, there's only 2-3 sure playoff teams.
*2 week break in Feb for 4 nations (meanwhile Askarov could get 4 games in the AHL), 6 games are a pair of 3/5 nights, including Winnipeg and Dallas.
*4 games in March before the trade deadline, 9 after
*9 games to close in April- 3 against Edmonton, 1 against Minnesota

I'd like to see Askarov get 40-50 games this year. He played 44 last year. I wonder if the best way to do that is let Vanecek play most of the December games with Georgiev playing sparingly. When Georgiev struggles send him to the AHL (positioned as confidence rebuild), bring Askarov up, move Vanecek before the 4 nations, then have Georgiev backup Askarov to close out the year.

I looked at the schedule, and you could largely (say under 5 games) hide Askarov from the top 10 teams while giving him a starter's load.

Grier basically answers all the questions we had here.

-Specifically mentions that getting even a 2nd round pick for a goaltender mid-season is extremely rare (Lehner and Fleury, both coming off elite seasons @CupfortheSharks for context) and that while he would have preferred to wait until later in the season, he felt like a getting a 2nd for Blackwood was "an offer he couldn't refuse"
-Very heavily implies that Blackwood had no interest in extending
-Kovalenko was someone that was targeted, not just a body. Sees him as a legit contributor
-Sounds like Georgiev is staying up for now

Ah yes. I'm sure a man of Georgiev's temperament and ego will just be thrilled being told to report to the AHL.

He's never done things like slash a rookie teammate for screening him or chirped a superstar teammate like Rantanen.(Rantanen telling him to STFU was funny though)

He was known for getting into it with teammates. When it was DeAngelo, it was easy to blame DeAngelo because he was a problem child with an ego. But then it kept happening with other teammates. The Rags fans warned the avs fans what they were getting when they got him lol.

I need Georgiev to go on a run and then we can trade him for a 2nd at the deadline… 😬

Yikes, I didn’t know this. That’s… not great. I don’t really want a guy like that in our locker room and if he slashes defensemen for being dumb, he’s going to hurt a lot of our guys…

I know that it doesn't really make him any more or less effective as a GM, but I really enjoy Grier's candor and honesty.

Slash is a bit of an exaggeration. Was more like a tap on the shinpads and saying f you

But read some of this fun

Very good points! I like goalies who are loose cannons, but the slashing of a team I’m not a fan of.

100%. I even like seeing his humanity talking about how hard it was to trade some of these guys. I’m sure the players really appreciate it too. I suspect his personality will go a long way in luring some guys here.

Jack Quinn has been a healthy scratch... wonder what it would take to pry him out of Buffalo. That's a player I might be willing to dangle Musty for. His scoring numbers are bad this year but whenever I catch a game he shows some high-end flashes. Maybe needs a change of scenery?

Is Askarov getting a call up ?
Nah, at least not right away. Georgiev/Vanecek tandem for now.

There are so many guys I'm dying to pick off the Sabres. Quinn, Cozens, Power, Byram, even Samuelsson as a buy low candidate.

It seems like they're even starting to turn on Peterka. Trouble is that it's hard to see what they'd even be looking for in a trade. Resetting the rebuild for a third time? Vets?Obviously I'm sure they'd be aiming for packaging a bunch of assets for a 25 year old good player, but we don't really have that. We could give them futures or we could give them rentals, and that's about it (as I'm not interested in moving Eklund or Zetterlund).
