I'm a little confused by your "garbage tier Grier" label. To me it indicates there are different Griers out there, different tiers of Grier, which then makes me wonder, are we all living in a Sharks multi-verse where these different Griers exist?

Because really, that's the only way I can make any sense out of your repeated slanderings of the guy.
Chris Grier is definitely S-Tier.

Is it wrong for me to think less of Couture because he wants to stay in SJ? At that level, shouldn't an athlete want a chance to win? Am I being too judgemental?

Some people care more about stability than victory. I don't see a reason for me to care, as a fan - Couture shopping himself for a cup isn't really going to make the Sharks any better, nor would that rabid desire make Couture any better of a player. I don't think it matters at all.

I don't think that's judgmental, and I think a lot of players for whom winning a cup at all cost is the priority would agree. Guys like Couture, Vlasic, and Hertl seem to not value that as much.

I truly believe Hertl was lied to about the direction the team was actually going when he signed. Yes he probably should have seen it coming, but something changed from the weeks leading up to him signing where he was i want to win to him signing and saying San Jose is home.

He signed before Grier was hired and then basically the first thing he was tasked with was trading Burns because he didn't like the plans Grier had for the team.

Eh, easy for us to judge as fans, but can never criticize a player for putting family comfort first.

There is a lot more to Hertl and NHL players than winning a cup. They are people too who have lives and families that extend beyond hockey. Hertl wanting stability for his family with small children is something that should not be understated. There is nothing wrong with him content to be paid millions of dollars to play a “game” for a living. It’s not as if he is mailing it in. He competes hard and does everything he can to help his team win. He just has other priorities in life other than hockey and that is perfectly fine.

But Hertl's entire mantra going into the final couple weeks before he eventually re-signed with the sharks was that he wanted to be on a team that is competing for a cup.

I think it's just that I don't want players on the team with that mindset. A player who doesn't mind not being competitive is a player who's not going to be competitive...
What if you look at it as a guy who wants to be one of the ones to lift a bad team back into being a competitor?

Yeah. This is a ridiculous mindset.

Couture has lived in San Jose since 2009 and just had a baby over the summer, and your thought is that you think less of him because he's not trying to actively uproot his family?

But this predates his marriage. And nobody is asking him to permanently uproot his family; they'dd have to move for a few years. Family is the most important thing, but it can't be the only important thing. Asking them to adjust to a new city (with no financial friction at all!) seems very worth it if allows Couture to pursue a cup.

I wonder if Couture is delusional, too comfortable, or too scared of change.

Sharks have only been “rebuilding” for a little over a year now. Give it time. I agree that if Couture doesn’t force his way out within the next 18 months winning a Cup probably isn’t a priority for him.

I was also going to say it's probably a little early for him. I had the same negative opinion about Couture but he still has 4 years left on this deal and may even be able to sign another after if he keeps up like Pavelski. I wouldn't be surprised too if he may have been discouraged by all of Thornton, Pavelski, and Marleau trying to chase cups but all still failing. They all uprooted their families at the end of the day for no reason, so why would he?

Vlasic I do despise though partly because of Wilson but also Vlasic himself. Has always seemed like he plays hockey so that he can live the lifestyle rather than him wanting to win.

I don't care if it's because of his family, I don't care if it's because he likes the locker room atmosphere, I don't care if there's a sandwich shop down the street he likes that he doesn't want to move away from.

I remember this same stuff with Shane Doan wanting to remain in Arizona and it annoyed me then too. If Couture wants to go pursue a cup, that's fine. If he wants to remain in San Jose, that's fine too. It's his life. Thinking "less of him" for doing so is the part that is making me call you out on this.

The premadonna way he's acted his almost 18 year career with the Sharks...? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALASKA! I thought you were a superfan!

Also, his comments about the Olympics. Crosby saying something sure, but not a fringe (at the time) defensemen possibly not even going to make the team in the first place. Guy should be thankful he got to play in one olympics and win at that.

As a fan, I was more focused on how he played. He’s not the player he was. Father Time is undefeated.
