The Islanders one is terrible. Take the 2nd out and it would still be doing them a favor.
I appreciate your feedback but I disagree. That would be a great deal for the Sharks.

They add two quality vets, both with two years remaining on their contracts, which won’t impact their future financially.

Grier has said many times he wants to add some quality vets/leaders to the team this offseason. So he doesn’t need to take up more longterm contracts to their books.

They both fill positions of need imo.

And they get another high end prospect to add to their system at #20.

12 million for 2 years to move up to 20 be the cheapest cap dump in the history of the league and it wouldn't be close. It's objectively terrible value.

The Sharks are taking on $27M in cap over two seasons. This isn’t the Islanders moving their captain and Pageau in a “hockey trade”; other than buryable contracts/C prospects I wouldn’t expect any notable players going the Islanders direction. While the Sharks can find some utility from Lee and Pageau, and that’s what keeps Grier on the phone, otherwise this is a cap savings trade for the Islanders.

As straight cap dumps both contracts are worth at least late firsts. Both contracts to change #42 to #20 is a huge win for the Isles. Both contracts for the #20 alone is giving the Isles a late first in free value.

I’d want Lee + Pageau + #20 + #54 for #85 + Benning/Burrows + C prospect. If Grier can’t shake #54 loose I wouldn’t cry over it.

Awesome! I’d be ecstatic with that trade!

I was keeping the value lower because:
- I believe there will be competition in a potential move like that (Chicago and Utah), so taking less value would give the Sharks an edge in making that deal.
- I still have some doubts with Grier’s trade acumen, so I wanted to keep my expectations lower.

Thanks for sharing your insight, I really appreciate it! 👍

There is also the hang up that both players have MNTCs AND the optics of dumping your captain ain’t great (though if there was a GM to do it, I get the impression Lou might be one of them).

There’s also a sneakier play where the Isles make the trade, Sharks buyout both players, and then the Isles sign them back at 1/3rd their current salary. Both players get full value of the remainder of their contract and don’t have to move, Isles keep two guys they presumably like at 1/3 cap hit, and the Sharks walk away with some high value draft assets with notable but not insurmountable cap drag for 4 years. Big question is will they make it through waivers unclaimed? Also, this is, like, some ballsy cap shenanigans and probably twice the stretch of the Isles just dumping the two contracts.

Lee + Pageau + 20 + 54 for Benning + Ozzy would be a great trade. Good way to weaponize cap space too. Pageau could anchor a line that takes on top lines to allow Celebrini and Smith to face easier competition.

Burroughs and Knyzhov. The highest-paid pair in the AHL?

I would be fine with that. Investing in the AHL is not an unwise choice. Having Knyzhov play with a potential rookie in the AHL like Havelid is a good idea. Having Burroughs there to pair up with someone like Cagnoni if he gets the nod to play there is a good idea. These guys are still good enough to help develop skills we want those kids to work on even if they're not NHL'ers. They're close enough to NHL'ers to at least be able to focus on their roles.
