2021 is a good example of a draft that had a clear-cut top tier at the time and other than Wyatt Johnston that tier has remained exactly the same. It went Power, Beniers, and then the 3-9 group of Clarke, Eklund, Hughes, Guenther, McTavish, Edvinsson, and Johnson (what I recall my final ranking to be in order) that was reasonably interchangeable. The drop was so severe that I had a freaking goaltender ranked 10th, and other than Johnston and potentially Stankoven no one has broken into that tier three years later.

I think next year will be the year we start to see "breakouts", based on what the 2020 class is doing now. LAF, Byfield, Raymond, Sanderson, Holtz, Perfetti, Jarvis, Holloway......all took steps this year that makes me think next year repeats with the 2021 class.

Kunin throws hits that leave him out of position, is a terrible penalty killer, isn't good at fighting (though, full marks for being willing) and isn’t leading anyone to anything of any significance

The idea that he's more valuable than a younger player who is at least a serviceable injury call up in Bordeleau just because he does more things but does them very poorly is ridiculous

Zadina has also not established himself as a depth player, he got regular healthy scratches on the 2024 Sharks, he's the one we should be questioning tendering a QO, not Bordeleau
Just to provide some stats on this - out of Sharks forwards (with at least 20 minutes of PK time), Kunin was:
  • 7th of 9 in expected goals against per 60. (Interestingly Zetterlund and Eklund were the top 2).
  • 4th of 9 in goals against per 60 (again Zetterlund and Eklund were the top 2).
  • 7th of 9 in shots against per 60.
  • Had the third highest on-ice save percentage during his PK time (so goalie was bailing him out).
  • 5th of 9 in takeaways per 60.
  • Did rate 1st of the 9 forwards for blocked shots per 60.

Is he a terrible PKer? No, but he's not near a good one. Interestingly, Zadina had better metrics than Kunin on the PK with the exception of blocked shots, and actual goals per 60.

I would think that the difference between expected goals against and goals against would indicate whether a goalie was "bailing him out" (very noisy). You could easily envision a world in which high save% by goalies during a certain player's TOI indicated that they were playing good D and forcing shots that were not as dangerous.

I wonder if Orlov from Carolina would be available? Solely because he's due a lot of money, and Carolina is famously cheap...

Would be great if we could get him in a trade with Necas to bring down the required return for eating Orlov's contract.

Is Orlov actually negative value though? Carolina also has Chatfield, Skjei, and Pesce with contracts up this year and Slavin and Burns up the year after (and Orlov). I don’t think we’d get paid or if we do not much but I think we could get both Orlov and/or Kotkaniemi for a very low price though (thinking FC or Coe or Ozzy or something like that) if Grier wants.

Would you take on Trouba for two years and get Kakko for the trouble?

Idea floated by a Rangers fan.
I think I would. I can’t stand Trouba’s flying elbow and Kakko certainly isn’t anything special, but they’d be good fits for our team. Trouba would be a solid partner for Mukhamadullin, and his teammates seem to love him. Kakko would be a great option on the third line next to Smith, as he’s got the size and defensive acumen to help him out. We have the cap space, the commitment on Trouba’s contract wouldn’t be too long to stomach.

Probably the show-stopper here would be Trouba’s NTC, which gives him 15 teams he can reject a trade to. From what I recall, Trouba specifically wanted a trade to NYC because his fiancé was going to medical school or doing a residency or something.

I assume NYR wants out of this contract so they can afford Lindgren and Schneider pay bumps this summer and Lafreniere, Miller, and Shesterkin the summer after?

I’d do it. Kakko could thrive here. Put him with Klim Kostin and find another KK and have fun with it.
Regarding Trouba, it’d be nice to have a defenseman like him. We haven’t really had that since Mush.

Quick google search has shown that Trouba's wife is doctor of Internal Medicine doing her residency at Zucker School of Med on Long Island, 2022 to 2025.

Was hoping she was in Pediatrics so that we could tempt her (and her husband) with the illustrious Lucille Packard's Children's Hospital at Stanford. But the silver lining is that you can do Internal Med anywhere so....still a chance.

Trouba isn't worth the trouble to me. Not for a 1st. Certainly not for Kakko. The way our team is going, we can't expect to have a better blue line for the sake of competing better if we're dedicating a spot to Trouba and his awful play all over the ice.
