Outperformed in what way? Garland has been buried on the Canucks depth chart so he was averaging 3 fewer minutes per game than Barbie. In terms of 5v5 points per 60 over the last 3 years, Garland is up there with some of the most efficient scorers in the league. I think he can be an excellent second liner at the very least and he's young enough that he should play at that level for the next 5 or 6 years
The exact type of guy that you want in a rebuild to help play with youngsters and then flip for more assets right as your window is beginning to open up. 3 years with his cap is really manageable and you can move him at 50% retained next TDL and get a nice package for him as a non-rental for under $3M that's a 50 point scorer. Or you keep him and flip him as a rental.

All about acquisition cost, but if it's merely a Labanc flip then it's a great deal to pursue.

If he’s as great as you say, why have two teams wanted to give him up and force him out?

If he’s be so wanted so we can flip him later, why is no one wanting him now?

Doesn't sound like the Canucks are trying to force him out at all. He's skating with Pettersson and Kuzmenko on their first line. I think there might be some bad blood between him and Tocchet from Arizona. Also a lot of American NHLers just hate playing in Canada these days.

I'm not sure it's accurate to say Arizona forced him out either. He was RFA that summer the Coyotes were in total teardown mode and also shipped out OEL, Kuemper and Dvorak.

It still doesn't make sense with the Sharks timeline and would go against what Grier has said about the team and future cap. It's not like he's super young, he's 27. He'd most likely take middle-6 minutes from Eklund, and possibly cause the Sharks draft pick to be slightly worse. Not worth his potential return IMO.

Our only wingers signed past this season are Granlund, Zetterlund and Givani Smith so I'm not worried about Eklund getting enough ice time.

Honestly I just enjoy watching Garland play. His combo of skill + high motor is exciting. I think it makes sense to acquire players like this even if they don't necessarily fit our timeline as long as the acquisition cost is low and the contract is not too long. Duclair is a perfect example.

Garland has been rumored OTB since before Tocchet was even thought of.

He was absolutely forced out in ARI. They were trying to trade him the entire season before throwing him into the OEL trade.

Here’s the thing. I like Garland as a player. I don’t think he’s any better than Barabanov but I also like Barabanov. It’s just weird to try to move Labanc for him and not get anything else in return. It’s like we are just doing VAN a favor.

Dang. I wanted someone other than Labanc. But yeah...

Garland is basically exactly the type of asset the Sharks should take a flyer on if the cost is cheap
It's weird because in reality it's really the complete opposite. Grittier than any non Eklund Sharks forward sure, but he's another soft small winger. Sharks have about 10 of those.

Truly one of the most maddening players I’ve ever watched. Dude could be a superstar but just can’t seem to figure it out.

I have this small hope that he comes in and he and Sturm, angry to be the 4th line, turn that line into a scoring line. But we’ll see…
I doubt it. Labanc is just not that smart of a player, imo. He's behind the play almost all the time in all zones and it's never gotten better with experience.

That you find the need to bag on Sturm is is showing. He plays for the logo on the front not the name on the back. He isn’t going to lead the team in scoring but he will lead the team. That’s the player he is. I’m thrilled he is here on our team.

Labanc is not on the opening-night roster...what a drop! Back in 2019, he was seen as a big piece of the future.
