Speculation: 2023-24-25-26 Sharks Roster Discussion

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
That doesn't guarantee Carels will be a better NHL defenseman and even if he reaches Byram's level it won't be until the 2030s in all likelihood.

Byram will be a 60+ point defenseman who logs 25 minutes a night for the Blackhawks next season and is still young enough that he can improve. That's easily worth a 4th overall pick in this draft class.
Most defensemen taken in the top 5 are better or more valuable than Byram. Maybe he does improve in a bigger role but it seems more likely that he struggles.

One thing I think teams are strategically doing right now is trying to make a lot noise through movement before the draft and free agency. That way the better free agents could get interested in teams that were active before the free agency and kind of calculate themselves which teams did the best job and try to sign there.
If Sharks can trade for a really good defencemen, draft Stenberg and have a ton of cap space to use, I could see couple of free agents being like ''Hey Sharks actually improved a lot and they have Celebrini to lead this group, I might wanna see this through''

I'm not sure there has ever been this much movement before the draft, or maybe I'm starting to forget things.

Carolina reportedly wants "now" pieces, so he isn't gonna cost us 9th.

pending RFAs usually don't cost much, I'm thinking Mukh+

He feels very much like the kind of guy Grier would covet. But I think he costs much more than Muhk. Might be Graf, Muhk, 9OA, which is rough, but..

Orlov - ??
Nikishin - Kesselring
Dickinson - Desharnais

Is a huge, well skating defense that can move the puck. Still not sure who the top RD is though.

better off offersheeting him than paying that much.

For those curious about offer sheets , WSH has our 3rd, Van our 2nd.

We could do the 4 1sts OS, or would need to trade for those two 2027 picks back.

A trade back from 27 for 2 2nds would be one way to get the 27 2nd back.

2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd is up to 11.7M

1st, 2nd, 3rd is $9.3M.

This will be a good tool in Grier’s belt, but this year; with so much cap (and 2 picks needing to be acquired), I don’t think it’s likely for us.

I’d give Edvinsson $11.7M for 5 years comfortably, but I think Detroit would reluctantly match (and never consider us in Seider deal!)

I think in his case the defense is non existent and they have better offensive options.

Doesn't mean he won't work for us, but they obviously think they can get a haul seeing what Byram just got.
EDIT; Gah, he's not eligible for an offer sheet. I'll get my coat...

A) I think Nikishin is the perfect add. He's got so many tools.
B) He's an RFA - say he was given 7 years at 9m (which I would do) - that would be an offer sheet Carolina would have to think carefully about matching. Comp on that would 'only' be a first, a second and a third. Not likely the Sharks would offer sheet him but some might - somewhat caps the ask, imo.

If it was 9oa and 62 and a prospect we signed him to an immediate long term deal at around the 9m AAV mark, I would be extremely happy. That said, I can't see why Carolina would necessarily benefit from that - they are going to be defending their cup...

Nikishin sure fits what Grier is looking for. Big, 24 year old with two way, possible top pair guy. Sadly a left shot, but he sure fits otherwise.

My only worry is why he was virtually benched in POs, and the success carolina had without him. There was something Brindy didn't like.

He also had like 65% OZ starts during the regular season and was highly sheltered. Seems a more physically engaged Mukh, but at 25 on opening night and in need of a new deal, not sure he's worth the squeeze as a mostly developed player.
