Sheng was on the Jason Gregor show and spoke the possibility of trading Graf for a defenseman into existence.

Must credit Hodge.
That seems like another of those moves you'd make to make sure you'd never win a cup. Getting rid of a cheap, versatile forward with some potential for a placeholder defenseman should be a fireable offense.

Graf isn't cheap anymore. We could use a placeholder defenseman more than a fourth line winger which is where Graf will slot in after we draft Stenberg.

I'd prefer to keep Graf and have him in our top nine because it's important to have players with different and useful skill sets throughout your lineup.

That's not to say he's not a good trade candidate. But I just don't understand why you think it's worth trading a player like him, who will have value and appeal around the league even after he signs his next deal, in exchange for "a placeholder defenseman."

That's just bad management of assets.

Even if you're trying to move up the timeline or whatever (which I disagree with as I see zero evidence that Grier's job is on the line), the problem is that Graf is a very useful player right now for this team, and removing him in a trade for a guy like Rielly means any gains from Rielly—which will also come with defensive issues, surely—are going to be offset to some degree by losing Graf.

And if you know you're likely to have to buy out the player in a couple years, that's even less reason to give up a useful young asset in such a trade!

Who's getting bumped to the fourth line instead of Graf if we draft Stenberg? Toffoli? I'm sure he'd love that. Chernyshov? Sherwood in year one of his new contract? It's actually good asset management to get ahead of Graf losing value on our fourth line by using him to address an immediate need.

Frankly, who cares what Toffoli thinks? I'm sure he's self-aware enough to realize how much his game has taken a dump.

Good luck ever getting a free agent to sign here again.
Frankly we shouldn’t be worried at this point about the washed up guys getting more than they deserve because they see us as a retirement home.

Besides, we keep saying this shit about Vegas and that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I think SJ first needs to get back to winning before they can be cut throat.

The reason it works in Vegas is because 3 out of 9 years they have gone to the finals.

Let's say Edvinsson demands 8x10.5M and won't budge. Yzerman doesn't want to pay him more than Seider and is forced to trade him.

Would you trade #2 and #20 for Edvinsson and immediately sign him to that contract?

This isn’t being cutthroat. This is putting the team first. Toff signed here I imagine under absolutely no expectations of being a part of a competitive team and that’s reiterated by his insistence of having a NMC in order to NOT be traded to a contender. Playing 4th line minutes because he’s clearly struggling to keep up with his he kids needs to be considered a reality check for his game now.
