Haha.

To answer your question more seriously, I think it's Byram and then Nemec. I don't think Mo Seider or Jake Sanderson are available.

Guys I’d decline, but strongly consider: Broberg, Power, Edvinsson, and Harley. Guys I’d move him for: Dahlin, Lacombe, Werenski, Heiskanen, Schaefer, Sanderson, Hutson, Seider and maybe Faber. Hughes/Makar contract situations make them non-starters for me.

Guys I’d straight decline even though I like the players: Hronek, Byram, Lev, Parekh, Buium, Parayko, Vlasic, and Samberg.

If those players asked out, I think #2 would be a great piece to offer, however, I think most of them take a D or a C.

The play for Rielly would be upgrading Klingberg and having a defenseman that can get the puck up to the forwards quickly.

I know he sucks defensively… so does a lot of Sharks players.

I hold no illusions of Rielly being some savior on the back end. He is a controlled asset to replace Klingberg’s role.

But you're basically conceding that no young defenseman is going to get offensive minutes for the rest of his contract because Rielly needs easy minutes.

Klingberg is better than Rielly.

Yeah… who of the “young guys” should “get” offensive mins? I only see Rielly getting those minutes the next 2 years… past that they can push him down the lineup.

Sam is the only one maybe next year… but even if he has to wait, Sam will be what 23 at the end of Rielly’s contract?

Outside of Sam I don’t know if there are any young guys that should “get” offensive minutes.

The question was "who are the best D under 25 and possibly available?". I'd say only the bolded fit that description. And no way Anaheim would trade us Lacombe. The rest are either unavailable or older than 25 such as Parayko.

2nd overall for Byram with a handshake agreement to sign a 8x9.5M extension on July 1st would be a great trade.

If your goal is to make the playoffs but never win the cup.

Well, than you have to buyout or scratch Rielly after 2 years, he's an anchor if he isn't getting those minutes and you've just limited the growth of someone.

You don’t need to scratch or buy him out… you literally push him down to 2nd or 3rd pair in years 3&4 of his remaining deal. If by year 4 he is terrible sure… cut him, it’s 1 year. What’s the cap at that point?

And whose growth will he block? Cags? I’m not losing sleep over that.

Dickinson and most likely whoever they select at 2OA (if a defenseman) are the only defensemen that matter in the short and long term.

Rielly isn’t blocking those guys.

Plus if a young guy cant beat him out… they aren’t worth giving the minutes to grow.

Rielly is absolutely making them play hard minutes because you need to shelter Rielly.
More like a 95th percentile outcome.
He's like a 70th percentile outcome, he's not very good.

When you say they won't help win a cup and they have a less than 5% chance of being a lower end first pair D...kinda yeah
Okay then I think Reid and Carels kinda suck. They lack the elite tools or physical profile you want when drafting a defenseman this high. Verhoeff or Smits would be fine though.
