Meanwhile, Rizzo keeps moving along, another 2 points.
5g 3-9 12 +8 [PP 0-3 3]

Rizzo and Devine (7th rd FLA) each have 12 points, the next highest scoring forward on Denver has 4 points.

There has to be a reason why Carolina traded this kid. He’s very good, looks like a real player.

I watched his second game on ESPN+, more impressed with that one than the first one.

They have a lot of second tier forward prospects in their system, so they may have worried about whether he'd sign with them. Carolina is also without an AHL affiliate right now.

He does look a bit like Brink out there.

Wheeler last January:

Red Wings prospect Carter Mazur is the Pioneers forward that gets the most attention and buzz, but Rizzo quietly capped off an excellent freshman season last year with points in both of the Frozen Four games (on Mazur’s line) to help them to a national championship and he has returned to become the team’s leading points producer as a sophomore (albeit a 21-year-old one) due to the pandemic and time spent marinating in the BCHL. He’s an incredibly smart player who understands how to facilitate and use spacing when the puck’s on his stick and where to go without the puck. He’s also a decent skater, a competitor and a diligent two-way player considering his average(ish) size. The Pioneers are better when he’s out there this year and while I’m not sure if he’s got NHL upside, he should get signed out of college and become a good AHL player at minimum. Not bad for the second-last pick of the 2019 draft!

I wonder if Rizzo was downgraded b/c he played with Mazur, and there's a tendency to assume the star is dragging his linemates with him. But Rizzo's production has increased each year, even as the talent around him declined. He's a little older due to COVID and time in the BCHL, That may have given him time to fill out a bit, but he was solid at 20, excellent at 21 and spectacular at 22.

I have seen two games so it’s not like I have a huge backlog to pull from, but I can tell you from the two games I saw, I think he’s a more intriguing prospect than Gauthier (please don’t read as better).

How does his skating look? I think like Brink, skating will make or break him in the NHL.

Yes. He’s very good. If you have ESPN+, there are two games, once against Cutter and they go against each other most of the game
I'll check it out later. Didn't know ESPN+ kept games up. If he's consistently attacking the middle like in that clip I'm gonna like him. Imagine if someone could convince Cutter to get more shots off from there.

He's gonna have to learn. Ovechkin is the only player I can think of who can overpower NHL goalies with distant wristers. Other recent noteworthy shooters have needed to learn how to get closer, or used raw speed to keep goalies off their angle. So unless he's got an Ov level shot hes going to face a learning curve.

I'd love to be surprised though.

Yeah, they got hockey East games, so you can watch Kaplan, Celebrini, Gauthier, all of the UTDP U-18 and 2 games of Rizzo and Buium.

Then they will show all of the Frozen Four.

I wonder if he's ever looked at a shot chart? Look how concentrated Pastrnak is around the net front:

I'll tell you who Gauthier's shot tendencies reminds me of......

Q4kSShD.png

A true 80 grade shot talent (which Gauthier is not), who is a career 35 goal scorer, regressing to 30 in recent years as scoring increases league-wide. 80 grade shooters cannot subsist on these shots, and it's long been a criticism of Laine that he takes low danger shots. It's why being a 30 goal floor player is a joke.

It's not that Gauthier doesn't have a plus (70 grade?) shot. It's that shooting as a skill is the most unpredictable trait, and he is one dimensional even with that one tool. It's simply wrong to believe elite scorers don't manufacture a f*** ton around the net because their volume is everywhere. It's often because they create it themselves or they wait for the better look. Anyone who thinks NHL scoring is a simple measure of shooting is telling the world they have no clue.

Random thought; how much do you think Laine's skating has prohibited him into turning into a 60 goal score like the other guys you mentioned?

I don't even think Laine is a bad skater at 6'5. At least historically, I don't know about the last year or so, his transition numbers are fine. His entire game - it's always been the knock -- is based on high end finishing from low danger areas. The chance creation math just doesn't add up to being a 50 goal guy, especially after league adjustments. He's even a decent passer. He's rancid defensively. But he relies a lot on others creating his shot for him (peak Winnipeg had a lot of good transition threats and passers).

Phantoms are 0 for 8 on the power play right now just in case anyone was having a good time tonight, its just a clusterfck out there and their best player on the PP has been Cal Petersen

He was not going to sign with them, and he certainly is not going to sign with us. Why would you consciously choose to play for Tortorella if all you had to do was wait a couple of months and pick you team...

Andrae is -3. Looks like he took the demotion in stride. Another prospect ruined

Former Phantom Adam Johnson with horrific skate to neck injury in UK. Fans asked to leave (no video in link thank god):

In 257 career AHL games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Ontario Reign, and Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Johnson racked up 50 goals and 137 points. He added a goal and an assist in four playoff contests with WBS and Ontario.

You seem to watch a lot of Flyers games. For the few I watch they seem fairly unskilled and slow. Is this true or is it that IL completely lacks imagination and would rather rely on the safe dump out/in plays?

Phantoms average age is like 23 years and one of their PP setups has gendron tuomaala andrae samson who are all 21 and under, theyre not a slow team they just get outworked. Its just little things that need attention, like if youre skating towards the puck carrier to force them to make a play you can use your stick to take away one lane to try and force the puck the way you want it to go, you cant poke check or block lanes if youve got both hands on your stick like youre shovelling snow.

if you watch the couturier pass to konecny on the power play goal against anaheim last night its a good example of what Lappy is trying to do, but guys dont have sticks ready for passes and they dont understand body position like couturier how hes got his ass to the goalie and only has to turn his hips to get the puck to TK for the goal, so even if theres defenders in front of him hes using whole body leverage instead of arm stength.

Our phantoms guys are also pretty tiny and the AHL is a competitive league full of shitty people who take it really personal when a 20 year old makes them look bad so theyre extra motivated to not let that happen.

He is an entry machine.

Highlights like these are depressing given he will not sign here. He probably knows where he wants to go. Carolina certainly did. They were astute enough to draft him in the 7th round, yet stupid enough to basically give him away. Something does not smell right....
