I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Avs are trying to bring JTC back. Bednar loves him and while he certainly isn't a 2C, people have gotten ridiculously carried away with the nonsense that's been said about him.


He's a solid utility 3rd line guy. With RyJo here and hopefully a legit 2C solution for us, having Compher back as a 3rd liner, the Avs could certainly do a lot worse than him on that front.


But I don't think the Avs will pay $5M for JTC. I think pretty clearly what's happening is if JTC is willing to take less money(And a fair bit less as well) to stay with us, the Avs will bring him back. But if the $5-6M deal in UFA us to tempting for him, we'll lose him.


I bet the Avs would be happy to bring JTC back for ~$4M on a 4-5 year deal and that's probably where they are in those negotiations right now if I were to guess.

I won't be shocked if they go lower in terms of AAV/Cap hit and give him more term. Like, say the Hawks offer him 5x$5M ($25M), and the Avs offer him $30M over 7 years, so the Cap hit is $4.29M.

JTC is a known commodity in the league, let's say he gets a 5x5 offer (I think he can get more on the open market but it's whatever), if he puts up his usual 30-35 points over the course of that contract, coupled with a big goal here and there, he's in line to make another 3-3.5M on his next contract.

I'm just spitballing on what the Avs could do to sign him. I mean they could go $26M over 7 years, and that drops his cap hit to $3.71M. But I think we all know he's not singing for less than what he was getting in his last deal ($3.5M per).

The amount of shit he gets here is quite nuts. It's not his fault Bednar plays him as much as he does. It's not his fault that he's had to play 2C multiple times over the last 5-6 years because of management not signing a 2C or because of injury. He's been just fine as a player. Gotten much better on F/Os. He can play in all situations. I'd take him back as a 3C in a heartbeat, as long as he's under $5M per. He reminds me of when the Avs had Yelle for so many years as 3C.

I just don't understand the JTC hate around here. Not every player is a high end scorer. JTC in the right role, plays it well. If you can get him around the 4M range I'd be perfectly fine with it.

We could do a lot worse than Mack-RyJo-JTC a or top 3 centers.

The issue is that a lot of the complaints he gets are very valid. If he had even a halfway consistent motor he’d be one of the better 3rd liners in the league. And for spurts he really is. But then he gets lazy and becomes a problem as a depth player. He’s a very weird player to judge.

Honestly I respect you as a poster but I literally don't put even an ounce of value on anything you say about JTC.

I dont think I've ever seen someone hold as much of an irrational hatred for a player as you do with JTC.

It completely invalidates anything you say about him quite frankly.

But I'd much rather them try to get Toffoli to put on MacKinnon's RW. Whichever winger they get, a 1 year deal would be ideal with Landy's situation and Toews' contract extension coming up.
