So Vancouver gets $8M in cap space with OELs buyout...

Conspiracy theory time but they would make a lot of sense to go after Byram with an OS this summer now. They could go like $8M for 5 years and would put us in a pretty ugly spot honestly. And the compensation would only be 2024 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.
Would you trade signed Byram for Miller w/ $2M retained?

They'd go ~6.4m x 5... too tough for the Avs to match and only a 1st and 3rd (they also don't have their 2nd to make a higher one work).

I just realized that for me this FA off-season is going to be more fun because there’s no big name we are hoping to sign or re-sign, just our own RFAs and a soon to be UFA in Toews.

We need some ass-busters for the bottom six.

Vancouver's 1st in 2024 should be a pretty damn nice pick if the worst does happen

I dunno if it would honestly. If they added Byram while getting rid of OEl, that defense already looks so much better.

They'd probably be a playoff team IMO. Although I also thought they would flirt with the playoffs this past season so I might just be overrating the forward group they have lol.

Yeah I went and looked afterwards and saw they don't have a 2nd.

I feel like the Avs probably match at $6.4M though, even though it would suck to do. Can't lose Byram for what would likely end up being a mid 1st round pick basically.

Though it would solve the LD dilemma, at that point you just keep Toews and Girard easily and they would get quite a bit of ammunition to be aggressive at improving the forward depth for next year.

So Miller at $6.25M?

Yeah, I would for sure.

Dear god yes. And I’m a big Byram fan.

Guess I'm in the minority here.

Schiefele/Lindholm/Kuzentsov etc + Byram (2nd pair) > Miller retained + Girard (2nd pair)

I get the contract security with Miller but still not worth it IMO

I'm only moving Byram for a 2C if he's in the same age category as Byram. Like McTavish or something. Otherwise I'd rather keep him and find other options

As much as it would suck Avs match that rather easily and deal with the consequences after (trade G, let Toews go, or trade Byram himself).

They can't let him go for a likely mid 1st and a 3rd.

If they found someone to take on Tyler Myers this year too, that's $14M in capspace they could free up

Yeah, I doubt they do that though. Myers with his signing bonus will cost a 1st+ to dump. And I think his signing bonus is weird and doesn't get paid until late in the summer or something weird.

Garland and/or Boeser could get them quite a bit more space... But I dunno why they'd move either of them really. Neither guy is worth much but both are solid middle 6 forwards that help to make the depth of the forward group stronger.

I just can't get past JT Miller the person. If we do trade for him, I hope to hell he makes me eat crow about him being an attitude problem with greater than average potential to disrupt a locker room.

Rather Makar for Petterson lol

0 chance they don’t match it. Worst case scenario match and trade.

That term would suck ass though. 5 years then UFA already. Like Montreal did to Carolina with Aho.
