On this morning's 32 Thoughts Podcast...

  • Friedman says he thinks Colorado and Montreal talked Newhook trade at last year's draft, but not sure what the deal looked like
  • Also said no one believes the Avalanche will keep their picks, and mentions that there are a lot of players available in the market for free
  • Speculates that Nashville is interested in signing JT Compher

Girard has to be traded for cap space.

I think they're going to use the Landy LTIR space as an excuse to keep the defense together for another season.

It sucks because the forward group is currently constructed, no way they come close to competing for a cup. They're one or two major additions away from that.

Makes sense.

A guy like Garland is probably available for free right now. The trick for the Avs is finding the right price point for 50% retention on that sort of player. We cant really afford Garland at full cap even for free. But at 50% retention he's only $2.425M and that's much more manageable for us.

Garland huh. Hopefully his reflexes are sharp because you know MacK's throwing his lid at him again as soon as he walks in the locker room.

I'm hoping we grab a bigger fish for the top 6 or maybe a 3C who is nearly 2C quality, but I'm also really hoping for Kiviranta and Woods. We need some dudes like that and they won't be too pricey. Maybe a Bonino for the Helm spot.

Currently constructed? Half the forward group is missing. How can any type of criticism be done with that many missing pieces for analysis?

Criticism? No. But until they go out and make the moves that will make them competitive, they're not competitive. Simple logic.

It's annoying so many are heaping on the praise already. Lots of work to be done.

Honestly I dont agree. They added the 2C in RyJo which, as long as he can actually be a ~60 point 2C for us, that solves a huge amount of our issues from last year to be honest.

Beyond that we simply dont know what else they plan to do with the forwards. Money is tight for sure... But if Byram only gets ~$3.2M on his bridge deal like that post from earlier suggested is his worth, they do have some space to work with. That would leave them with $12.5M in space to sign 1 Dman, and 6 forwards. So just under $2M per player, but if we assume they go for $1M or less for the 2 fourth line guys we need, they'd have an average of over $2M per player for the rest of the roster spots.

Trade for guys with retention and they can still make a pretty decent roster despite not moving a Dman.... For example:

Trade #31 to Vancouver for Garland @50% retention. Then trade #27 + #37 to Philly for Laughton + #87. Sign Drouin for $1M and you've got:

Drouin - Mack - Nuke
Lehky - RyJo - Mikko
Garland - Laughton - ????
Meyers - ???? - LOC

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
Girard - ????
MacDermid

George/Frank

If Byram is getting $3.2M and Meyers gets $800k, this roster would be at $76.375M. Meaning $6.5M left for the final 3 spots.

There’s no praise. None whatsoever from my part.

My point was it’s illogical to critique the forward group when half of it is missing, and the half that is there is Mack, Lehkonen, Nuke, Rantanen and RyJo.

Praise or criticism should be given when their roster seems completed.

“Lots of work to be done”.

I mean you have them doing what I'm saying they need to do, bring in one of the better 3Cs available and solve a top six winger role. Now I think Drouin is a mirage and no way he sticks in Bednar's top six, but those are the two moves MacFarland needs to get right if they want to be competitive.

I'm really hoping RyJo works out but I'm nervous. Laughton/Backlund would be great insulation.

I'm relatively certain you and I are saying the same thing from the opposite perspective lol.

Like it. A lot of players are available for 50% retention. Some of these will be busts but some of them will work out very well. Hopefully we get lucky.

Yeah we have to wait and see what else is cooking. My main point was that they do have enough cap space to make things work if they make the right moves, without trading a Dman.

Blake Wheeler would be awesome to have. No doubt he's hungry to win.

Ehlers is my dream winger for the top-6, but he'd be a lot more expensive.

They could. They probably will end up keeping all the D and making the forward acquisitions fit. Seems like they really want to keep the defensive group together as long as possible. Hopefully it's not deep discount bargain bin shopping because of it.

Backlund at under 3 million is exactly where I'd start if I were MacFarland.

Yeah for all the hate JTC gets for his play as a 2C in the playoffs last year, those people tend to forget how well he performed as a 2C much deeper in the playoffs the previous year when Kadri got hurt.

Look he’s ideally not a 2C. But he’s a real good 3C. He had an amazing season last year. Yes the ending went downhill but isn’t it possible he simply ran out of gas? A short summer thanks to the cup win and then he still went on to play the 7th most minutes in the NHL last year. We’re talking hard defensive minutes too. Ones that got him top 15 in Selke voting.

I get not wanting to overpay him or commit to term. But if he’s willing to come back on a fair deal I’m shocked how many people are against that because of 7 playoff games.

I have trust issues with this player. So should everyone else.

I don't want Compher back for unless it is for 3-4 years and 3.5m or less. Any term longer than that is going to be really bad and any dollars more than that has a strong chance of the pumpkin coming back. I'd much rather spend newly found assets getting Laughton, getting a better player, at a cheap cap hit to be able to have flexibility cap wise.

The good news is apparently Nashville has interest in him and hopefully a few more teams do so as well so we don't have to worry about it.
