Do you guys think Dubas interviewed himself when he got the GM job? Did he like sit in front of a mirror and conduct an interview?
It was a phone interview

Caleb Jones to CAR. That’s like too many defensemen right lol? Especially at the start of the year?

Slavin-Burns
Orlov-Pesce
Skjei-DeAngelo

Plus they still have Chatfield and Coghlan. Our bottom pair is currently JJ-Girard. Would Chatfield be an upgrade over JJ? It can’t be that hard to be haha. I’m purely looking at numbers/info. RHD. $762K salary. UFA. Looks like he’s got decent size. 6’1” and 190. That puts JJ into #7. MacDermid further down depth chart.

One of Skjei/Pesce is heading west young man.

I wouldn't waste assets on a 6/7th in a trade. That's what PTOs and waiver wires are for.

As for our depth, I like JJ to start with but with age, the wheels can and often do come off in a hurry, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do look to push him down to #7 at some point.

I got the impression that as the season went on, Bednar took to liking Brad Hunt over KMac when he had the ability to only have one of them in the lineup. In fact, he used Hunt as a 4th liner in at least one game as well. I'm hoping that is the new order. Hunt then Kmac or we'll see where Malinksi is at. I don't want to get my hopes up to high, but he showed well in his brief introduction to pro hockey last spring. But then again, so did Meyers when we first signed him. I still think there is a player locked away in Meyers, I just hope Malinski has an easier transition.

Should have traded Toews and two firsts for Horvat is what I'm choosing to interpret the last 15 pages as.

Also Manson bad. A player who plays a game like Manson but isn't bad is very crucial to playoff success. But not being bad is the important qualifier.

Can Manson aging and coming off an injury improve to a mediocre second pairing defender? If he can the defense looks very good after trading Girard for Petry and a fourth rounder.
What I get from the last 15 pages is that we desperately need Kane who’s 400 years old and is gonna come off a hip surgery

All you have to say is that another team may not suck and could be hard to beat. That's the trigger to summon them.
Oh I remember. I was being negative for saying the Avs shouldnt take Seattle lightly and that Seattle could beat the Avs with the depth they had. Fun times. Seattle put they ass to work

Look at the team they ended up beating though. It was a shell of itself.
*Does bad Don Corleone impression. "Look at how they massacred my boy."

Just one of Landy or Val and the Avs win handedly IMO. Vegas in the conference finals would have been their only real test with a relatively healthy roster.

If the Avs had Landy they win that series in 6. They didnt have him and did nothing to address that hole at the deadline sadly. Oh well.

Nah. Im just being real. Its not positive of negative. Just facts. Like the Avalanche likely wont win the cup next season. Thats a likely fact but to some people here that looks negative.

This is the case every year for every team though. Avs are favored to win the Cup next year and the odds are still 8:1 against them.

It's hard to win and it requires a fair amount of luck (not getting unlucky).

At least on paper this team is much better than last years though. Objectively you should be a lot more optimistic about this team than you were last year.

True, but when I say it im being a hater when in reality as you say its hard to win so chances are im going to be right.

I am more optimistic about the team this year then I was last year. Havent you seen my bullish comments on RyJo? Having said that I dont think RyJo, Drouin and Colton are enough to put the Avs over but that can obviously change at the TDL.

The way I see it, their Cup team a couple years ago was so incredibly dominant (historically dominant too) the Avs don't need to have a roster anywhere near that good to win.

So comparing the two teams, the main parts of the blueline are the same, but Bo and Cale are older and more experienced. So that's a plus.

The 3rd line with Colton and Wood is improved from a third line with Compher and NAK. That's another plus.

The main difference (aside from Landy being a question mark) is Johansen and Drouin replacing Kadri and Burakovsky's roles.

Burky's contribution was mainly production and zone entries. He wasn't terrible defensively, and he was big enough not to get too muscled around, but these weren't strong points of his either.

Kadri didn't focus too much on defense per se in Colorado. He was solid, but again it wasn't a strong point. His contribution was grit, swagger, rush attacks, and production.

So for me, if Landy can come back, the difference in production from Kadri/Burky to RyJo/Drouin is mostly the difference between next years team, and the Cup team.

And since they don't need to be as good as that 22' Cup team, if they can get close in production from RyJo and Drouin, and they have more depth scoring like expected on the 3rd line, then it's just about Nate, Mikko, Cale, Bo, and Toews doing what they do.

There are other important factors like can Manson be healthy enough to play in the playoffs? Can Val get his head screwed on straight? Can Georgiev have another solid season and can he be a little better in the playoffs? These are important factors but every other team has factors like this in their own right.

If they can get Landy back and don't get decimated with injuries again, this can be another great team that can win. Maybe not as good as that special 22' team, but potentially another great team, because they'll have addressed some of the depth issues from last year, and they still have incredibly dominant star players like Nate, Mikko, and Cale.

Most teams don't have both depth and star power, so if the Avs injuries don't crush their depth again, they're in as good a spot as ayone else, if not better, to win it all again.

Just some minor notes in addition to the tweet already posted...
  • MacFarland said Frederik Olofsson is a guy they watched a lot in the AHL/NHL and will push to make the team.
  • Talked up Ondrej Pavel a lot, described him as a grinder/Pker
  • Chris Wagner injured himself after signing with Colorado (injury wasn't mentioned, but sounded major?)
Grain of salt but sounds like Olofsson is far from a lock to make the team (Blidh 2.0?).

Manson is one tenth of the player Footer ever was. But Footer had a 4 or 5 year stretch in his prime where he struggled to play 60 games. But then he capped it off with 2 good relatively healthy seasons for the Avs.

If Manson can play two years healthy at a #4 level of play that would go a long way. Otherwise can he get allergic to his skates real quick?

Foote would not be the player Foote was in this era. Not a defense of Manson but it is apples and elephants.

Alot of cocky people here last season.

And on the media. I don't think I saw a single prediction that Seattle would win. Great setup for an underdog.
