I’d much rather let Malinski and JJ earn the last spot and then upgrade at the TDL if necessary. Foote won’t have any impact on the defense that’s more noticeable than JJ as is.
JJ can't play the right side. Manson is often injured, and we've seen countless times that G, Toews and Bo don't fit well on the right either. Adding a cheap, young, and big RHD shouldn't be a problem. I want some insurance, and for Malinski or Foote to earn that spot. If not Foote, then we should make a trade because I see our right side to be a giant glaring hole in our lineup. With the way Bednar ices guys who aren't reliable in their own end, Makar is just going to end up injured and burnt out again come the playoffs. I absolutely see this as a bigger need than a 2nd line winger.

Chet, going back a month, given the amount of cap space available and the shallowness of the prospect pool, what on earth were your expectations for this offseason?

Even with the skinny cap space and the lack of meaningful trade assets in the system, they added a 2C, a 3C, a few depth pieces - and along the way, they didn't touch the defense....or the goaltending....or the top 4 forwards on the team to do it.

I mean, I get if the frustration comes from the lack of draft success over the years, hence the Avs depth is in question. The Avs have sucked at drafting, and when a team can't even ice 3rd/4th players from their 1st and 2nd round picks, that's rough.

But given the aforementioned circumstances, has this offseason really been so bad? It's certainly not perfect, and there's risk here (2C and Drouin are question marks), but I guess I'm not sure what reasonable higher expectations were realistic?
Well I was hoping for bottom 6 rebuild, which we touched on with Colton and Wood. Coupled with LOC and Cogs that's fine. But we are missing a 3W and 4C. Meyers sucks, and Foudy is a decent prospect but big question mark.

Watching reasonable 3rd/4th liners going for super cheap on 1 year deals is frustrating when we have these holes.

What's also frustrating is our Landy replacement is a huge ? coming off a 2 goal season. RyJo is a ? coming off a fairly big injury.

So basically our season hinges on question marks coming through for us and making an impact and so so depth actually working out.

I would have liked a more aggressive approach with less question marks. They still have time this offseason but right now the roster is lacking IMO and it's frustrating since we are supposedly going for a Cup.

Re: the D

I love the optimistic approach of penciling JJ as the 6th D when we all know damn well that our blueline is incapable of staying healthy. By January the pairings will be

JJ-Makar
Achan-Hunt
Fairbrother-Dermy

Manson will pull his back out.
Toews will hurt his shoulder playing 34 mins a night.
Malinski will look promising and then have some freak accident on ice.
Byram's eggs will be scrambled by another useless 4th line plug.
G will finally succumb to the weight of carrying the One Ring.

Coyotes probably realized he wasn't a player above 35 on LTIR or wasn't going to be worth much at the deadline

Damn. Hopefully everything is good with Galchenyuk. By all accounts (at least publicly) he was well liked and on his best behaviour here.
