Confirmation that Sykora will be released for the WJC.

Coach of the national under-20 team Ivan Feneš told us last weekthat the situation around you is not yet resolved. Has anything changed yet?

Yes, it is almost certain that I will participate in the championship. Last week, my father came to see me in the USA, who, as an employee of the Slovak Ice Hockey Association, inquired about my situation with the assistant general manager of the New York Rangers, Ryan Martin, who is also the general manager of Hartford. He told his father that there would be no problem with that.

This is 100% the right move and I'm happy he is going to get that opportunity.

That's great to hear. I'd expect him to have a big tournament. He has really started to adjust to Hartford even if his role is somewhat limited.

Yeah, I still don't have big expectations for him on the scoresheet, that's not really his game. I just want to see him pesting and making a huge impact on the game while chipping in some points when needed.

I'd reserve my expectations. Similar to Berard performance in his last WJC, IMO these players maximize their efficiency when put in specific situation that fit their styles. Not saying Sykora definitely can't do it but it's not a guarantee that if he's relied on for offensive production in a first line role - he'd be able to produce. Surely I could be off-base in this assessment.

Yeah you're both absolutely right on that point. I certainly don't expect him to go out and lead the tournament in scoring, but I would hope that he makes a major impact for Slovakia doing all the things that he does.

Looking at the Slovak player pool it would seem like he's in line for a spot on the second or third line and some PP time. So, he should have some opportunity to pick up points. And in a short tournament if you make an impact early you tend to see an increased role. Let's hope he earns a bigger look.

I'm hoping for a Fast-like tournament where he is making the small plays and being a driver of play all over the ice. PP, PK, maybe around a ppg in the tournament would be a solid showing for Sykora.

Sykora wore a letter last year right? Any chance he's gonna be the captain this year?

Depends on who else is there. Šimon Nemec captained the team last year with Filip Mešár as an alternate. Both will most likely be playing again this year. Libor Nemec, the other alternate, aged out.

Sýkora didn't wear a letter last year.

Debbies fans are bitching about a hit on Hughes that went unpunished. And a salty Redwinger chimed in as well.

Good times…

Unlikely, but i’d be shocked if he didn’t have an A.

Chris Peters has Perreault as likely and Fortescue on the bubble.

His projected lineup includes both, with Perreault at 2LW and Fortescue at 2LD.
So pathetic that Gabe continues to be disrespected as if he is just riding the coattails of the other 2 guys.

He should have been a lock with the other two in that article.

i'd co-sign this. i'd like to see a lot of play driving with his speed, and at this point he should have the strength to be controlling the puck and consistently exiting puck battles with it. slovakia is a country that has their hockey program going in the right direction, but he should still be one of their leaders in ice time, whether his 5 on 5 line is considered a 1st or 2nd. personally i'd really like to see him have a fairly big production tournament given he's playing against pros regularly and has displayed pretty good puck skills and shot...i'd like to see him show the ability to make some dominant plays offensively. obviously not what he's going to be in the nhl, but given he's been playing in the ahl and has played 2 prior wjc's, i'd like to see him show he's made significant progress over the prior 2. i think a ppg would be my baseline expectation for the tournament, and beyond that would be very nice to see. that is somewhat dependent on the group slovakia has this year though, assuming they have a roster that has a chance to medal that's my expectation. if they've taken a step back and are getting their doors blown off by any decent team and there's nothing around him i likely won't really take much away from any kind of performance.

Saw Karpa play tonight. Not yet on Harvard’s top pp unit. Surprisingly respectable skater, but otherwise unspectacular performance.
