And ppl here were worried about the Caps and Flyers lol, they suck and have overachieved the whole year and are coming back down now. The only way the Wings don't make it is if both NYI and Pitts pull ahead, and I don't think NYI especially will be ahead at the end

Absolutely wild we are back in the drivers seat. We arent chasing the playoffs lately, that playoffs are chasing us and we are running the opposite way. Would be thrilled to watch the guys play playoff games even if we have a slim chance of making it to a game 5 or 6.

Look I wish they hadn't blown the month of March away like they did, but this is going to be a wild finish

I do think we need to relax on the team "blowing" the playoff thing in March. We aren't that good of a team, and we way outdid what our team is really capable of in January. The record we had in January/February is not what this team is. You can know this by how many games we have won this season, where we really didn't play that great, but Lyon stole for us. Even tonight, outshot by Buffalo and we get outshot by most teams, which may not always tell the story but does a lot of the time. There have hardly been any games this season where we clearly out-chanced/outshot any of the top or even playoffs/similar level teams. I honestly think we are similar to what Seattle did last year, kind of surprised everybody, and this year they came back down to earth. We also have among the most comeback wins, which is great and all, but also says we trail a lot and are chasing the game a lot.

It is why I haven't been that excited about the team this season. Middling players (Copp, Compher, Perron, Chiarot, etc) getting us into an ok standings spot and maybe a playoff spot, but we are still not doing great or playing great consistently and outside of 3-4 kids, in Seider, Raymond, Ras and Veleno most of our play is with said meh vets. I want the playoffs like everyone else, but I honestly can't see us beating any team in a playoff series. Even if we met NYI or WSH somehow in round 1 which of course we can't, I don't see us guaranteed to win that series. Unless Lyon absolutely goes Giguere or something.

Would also be nice if more than 1-2 kids were forcing the issue in GR/elsewhere. Right now there aren't many that look real close to NHL players for next season.

Edvinsson was forcing things starting in training camp. I would go further and say if Edvinsson stays up the whole year or at least is there in December, Detroit would be comfortably in playoffs at this point. We can also discuss the same for AlJo. That's why i'm not ready to call for Lalonde's head, because he was not provided with the best roster by Yzerman.

I also think that Berggren and Mazur should be considered as close for next season, maybe even Kasper.

Ed was hardly forcing things in training camp. He had good moments and bad moments. He was also just returning from shoulder surgery. Bringing him up under those circumstances would be crazy unless he absolutely dominated training camp, which he didn't.

People see how he's playing now and assume he would've looked that good in October when it's also possible the big minutes in Grand Rapids helped him learn things at a slower pace (like the PK system) that eased his transition to the big club.

Even if Lyon goes Giguere, the Wings really don't have the horses to go on a deep run. I don't think the roster stacks up favorably compared to the 2003 Ducks at all. I think the Wings need Lyon to stand on his head *and* officiating to go their way just to make it a series vs any of the potential first round opponents.

The likely outcomes here are "1st round exit and 17th/18th overall pick" or "missing the playoffs and 14th-16th overall." Either way it's probably nothing to get too excited about. I mean don't get me wrong, some good players have come out of that draft range, Parise, Getzlaf, Karlsson, Tarasenko, Barzal, Connor and of course Larkin..but the list of guys who never made it or became meaningful contributors is much longer of course.

Yeah, this team is not built for the playoffs. A team with middling talent can succeed in the playoffs with hot goaltending, solid forechecking, and a tight defense that limits mistakes.

This team is none of those.

I just want them to make the playoffs. That's a success. I don't expect them to turn into something they're not in the postseason.

But a playoff run was never in the stated expectations this season. The next logical improvement is to make the playoffs, and at that point you're playing with house money.

As for draft picks, I'd rather package every single pick in the next five drafts to add top half of the lineup established NHL players under 30. There isn't a single magic bean going forward that I care about; I think this franchise needs a combination of continued introduction of its best prospects, gradual shedding of underperformers, and significant trades / free agency signings to add real pieces. Whether it's 14th or 18th overall, I'm not waiting another 5 years to see if that kid is a second liner or a third liner, let alone relying on him.

These days playoff runs are pretty unpredictable. Take a look what we had to do to pass the ducks back in 00s. Compare it to 90s against Stars and Avs. Now Eichels and Stones are winning cups.

I'm suddenly reminded of all the posts from February that were essentially "I don't care if we sneak into the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed, this is a team you do NOT want to have to play in the playoffs"
