Cowan needs to bulk up and get stronger in addition to improving his skating.

The Leafs have had way too many undersized and mediocre skating forwards over the past half decade.
This is how I feel as well. We have enough guys who can play on the outside saucing passes across the rink.

The organization should be trying to trade some of this undersized talent for some guys who can play on the inside. There's nothing wrong with that asset management.

Let’s dump Cowan. Who needs a runt in the lineup that can’t achieve anything. It’s obvious based on his OHL performance that he will never amount to anything. Cowan for Rempe is a good value deal. Awesome asset management.

Is his skating bad?
I haven't seen him much but did see him get a few breakaways/ just kinda blaze by people
In the pre season.

I've been beating this drum since the he was drafted but yeah the kid needs to cook more in the OHL.

He is a great player that has benefited from being part of a great London program. Works hard, has skill, etc. However, the jump up is just too much at this time. Send him to London, they should have a great season and compete for another title... He can bulk up, work on some individual skill and come back to camp next year bigger and more dynamic.

Will London be playing Easton Cowan more as a winger or a centre this year?
He's had time at both spots, and probably will again this year. His future in the NHL is likely as a winger though.

He needs to become more physically mature, improve his skating, and work on the other areas the Leafs coaching staff will have told him to.

I would trade him now when he has the most value! Maybe Cowan+ pick to Seattle for Wright?

Why does Seattle do this?
Just a suggestion that they should upgrade center position with someone young and has potential. Could be Catton or Dvorsky/Bourque pretty much anyone under 22 with some potential still to improve. Seattle probably would not want to trade but might able to get equal or close to same value of center back in a trade to team who needs a winger instead.

I thought people would turn on Cowan because he didn’t make an immediate impact in the NHL but didn’t think people would be pushing him out the door this soon. It’s Nick Robertson all over again.

Not making the NHL as a 19 year old far away from the top of the draft at that is for sure a good way to make people want you traded.

He could improve his first few strides and probably his agility with the puck, which can be said for the majority of players, but overall his skating is good.

Hopefully his scoring goes up. He should at least be matching what he did in the OHL last year.

Looked better in training camp last year, and so far in the OHL he looked better last year.

Not sure but many players do well in juniors and vanish in the NHL, so with his point drop off and size they are willing to trade him for a different kind of player. Perhaps one who can play now? The problem is Cowan's value isn't very high to other teams.

Drop off in points? He's still continuing his point streak from last season and he's only 5/6 points off his pace of last year in a small sample size of 15 games... and he's exceeded that pace over his past 5 games

I'm not the one freaking out, yelling trade him! Just speculating why they are.

The key is to let him cook away from the limelight.

Exactly. You are usually right more often than not

There is no rush here. Let him play for the Marlies and develop as needed. I hope he gets at least a year or two for the Marlies with some NHL call ups mixed in.

What is up with all the amateur scouts in this thread(not you), most of you dudes know less about hockey skills then "Jen" does

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - June 5th: "Cowan is a standout skater who buzzes around the ice, works and plays hard, thrives on the penalty kill, and emerged as an important player for a typically strong Knights team this year. He plays a fast, clever, determined and consistent game, hunting pucks, winning races, and then making little skill plays when opportunities or openings in coverage present themselves."

Chris Peters - Flo Hockey - June 1st: "A big postseason performance with OHL runner-up London helped put Cowan more firmly on the map among the big late risers in this draft class. Despite slightly below-average size, Cowan has a good on-ice work ethic and showed enough skill to produce."

Corey Pronman - The Athletic - May 30th: "He plays with a lot of energy and courage, not shying from getting to the net or engaging in after-the-whistle activities. Cowan has good skills, and enough hockey sense to make you think he'll score as a pro, but whether there's enough pure offense in his game is a question, especially as a barely 5-foot-11 player."

Easton Cowan is a highly intelligent and creative forward. He creates opportunities by outspeeding and outdangling the opposition. Cowan's hockey sense matches the quickness in his feet, he's able to link passing plays in transition, manipulate defensive gaps with clever movements and feints, and find pockets of space in the slot. -EliteProspects 2023 NHL Draft Guide

Strengths

  • Strong two-way skater
  • Great defensive instincts
  • Non-stop motor
  • Sees the ice at an elite level

at least read some professional scouting reports before heading off into fantasy land to make yourself sound like some kind of hockey savant.

or maybe just maybe all the pro scouts have been wrong about this guy:rolleyes:. It is no different than the guys who insisted just before camp this year that Minten couldn't play defence and he'll need 2 years in the AHL to straighten his game out? I predict he'll likely play more Leafs games than Robertson this season. Gruden loves the kid and can't say enough good things about him! He's got him centering Grebynkin and Nylander and also getting time on both special teams.

Bedard isn't holding up to the scrutiny this year, looks overwhelmed at times.

Wright should have stayed in junior.

Cowan playing another year in junior was probably the right choice.

Isn't Cowan at a higher pace of GPG this year?

.867 this year
.63 last year

Not sure about his pace. Things can change quickly over the course of one weekend in the OHL but it seemed like he started off a little slower in October.
