Prospect Info: 2023 1st Rd Selection - #28 OA (via BOS, WSH) - C, Easton Cowan [London Knights, OHL; [Height 5.11 -- Weight 185]

Sorry! My mistake!
I was thinking of 2 years ago when he was down in the AHL on a conditioning stint.

Last year was the exception!

Yes his rookie season! He went down on conditioning but if wright was able to get an exemption maybe Cowan can?

If a player turns 20 by Dec 31st they are eligible to go to the AHL that year even if they are 19. Wright turned 20 on Jan 05. So he barely missed the cut off, so they applied for an exemption. Additionally AHL and CHL agreed he has nothing left to prove in CHL.

So he didn't meet the criteria, as he turned 20 after December 31st.

An almost pregnant pause ...

Oilers just won the Cup, well almost.

Wright got the exemption because he technically had 4 years in the ohl (which you need to go to the AHL). He didn't fully legitimately get it though because one entire year was missed due to covid, and with this rule you must play like 25 games in a season for it to count. His last year he only played 20 games so that one technically shouldn't count either but he was in the nhl/AHL for half the year so they decided to give it to him anyways.

I totally understand and can appreciate that the AHL age rule is put in place to help protect the CHL leagues and keep them as competitive as possible.

It just sucks for the 19yo individuals as there's typically 10-20 players each year where the AHL would be the best place for their development and they're ineligible to play there.

I do hope Cowan plays makes the team this year or is at least given the full 9 game trial. At a minimum, it's nice to have three guys (Robertson, Pacioretty, and Cowan) all in competition for a top 9 scoring role. I'll never complain about more scoring depth given our past playoff scoring woes.

He will get 9 games but he didn't shine. The flip side, the Leafs have a vet team. He goes back. Maybe WJC is his breakthrough.

He is likely heading to the WJC this year regardless of where he starts IMO.

It would be the Leafs best interest for his development to release him for the tournament.

Is London expected to be good this year? Either way I’m sure they are pumped to have him back. If they trade him that’s worth a lot as well if they aren’t in contention

Should be overwhelming favorites once again if all Cowan, Barkey, Dickenson, Bonk etc. are returned.

London had some ridiculous number of players at NHL camps this year. They're a prospect factory.

You don't play for the hunters until you spend time with the London nationals or the st thomas stars, until you grasp how to play the right way
Unless you are supper talented.
Marner
Kane
He trains his players line an NHL team.
I rember kadri being benched a number of times when they traded for him .
He is also ruthless he traded one of his own hunter don't remember his first name.
But he also realizes when they don't have a spot for a player that should be in the OHL .
Recently Kaeden Johnson to Windsor for a 4th rd pk he in 2 games he has 3 g 1 a 4 pts

They will be a contender with or without Cowan. His presence probly makes them a top 2 conference favourite. (season tics since 99)

Very disappointing showing so far in the preseason games to date. He’s looked overwhelmed and pretty much invisible.

Nerves are probably getting the better of him but would love to see him to turn it around in the remaining games. Either way, he will be really good player for us one day. Just not looking like he’s quite there yet.

He’s not quite ready - but don’t agree with overwhelmed and invisible. Not true at all.

I do think him going back to Jr is the best possible outcome. Being 19 years old playing in Toronto is a lot of pressure only a few can manage. Let him cook in the OHL and maybe even some time with the Marlies next year
