Prospect Info: 2023 1st Rd Selection - #28 OA (via BOS, WSH) - C, Easton Cowan [London Knights, OHL; [Height 5.11 -- Weight 185]

This kid looks like a player. He's has all the tools... looking to be a good NHLer. Hopefully he can put it altogether in the OHL this year.

At the draft I really didn't know much about him and thought it looks like a stretch but he's proving otherwise so far.

I am surpised by his skating ability. From the vids he looked fast but that's against OHLer, everyone looks fast
He looked descent so far with skating

how the tone shifts

I don't see the tone shifting. He's had a great camp, he's performed well in practices too. Thrilled that he looks like the real deal. I don't think many people thought he'd be on the main squad this year, but back in the OHL with London. I hope he has a great year with them, continues to improve, and maybe next year, or the year after can join the Leafs.

Kid looks bigger than 5'11. With his frame and if it's true about his skate size, it wouldn't surprise me if he grows to 6'2. If he were to, having him, Knies and Minten really changes the look of our top 9. If Bertuzzi resigns as well we could be looking at something like:

Bertuzzi (6'2) Matthews (6'3) Marner (6')
Knies (6'3) Nylander (6') Cowan(6'2)
Tavares (6'1) Minten (6'2) Robertson (5'10)

There is a chance he joins team in playoffs .. but regular season hockey will be in London

I will just leave this here for the haters of the pick...

Told you so.

Is London a good team this year? I suppose it might depend some on how far they go into the playoffs.
no idear .. my kids have all gone through junior now .. so only a couple of old buddies who still work in league .. but London usually always has a decent team with Kitchener and Windsor

Ah yes, because one preseason tells us everything. I’ll admit he looked pretty good but at least let him play in the regular season first. It’s too early to say you told me so.
Too early for him to say i told you so but it wasn't too early for you to hate the pick, eh?

It's only "because one preseason" if you didnt know the player before the draft, which you clearly did not, so what was your hatred of the pick based on?

"Small", not eye popping numbers, was ranked in the 2nd round by a bunch of qualified internet scouts that never get anything wrong.

Those are the reasons why so many people hated this pick imo (which is just dumb for the record)

This is the other side of it. We all remember SDA's first pre-season. It was the best hockey he ever ended up playing. Earned an ELC out of camp and we thought it was a matter of time before he was on our roster.

As someone that liked the pick and was checking twitter the odd time over in Europe through most of training camp, happy to see how well he's done.

I have no idea what the upside is...I just like the way he plays.

I think he's gonna have a great year in London.

Hit the nail on the head right there, very well said I love it. Too quick to judge positively but it is never too quick to have negative judgements apparently...

Draft picks are necessarily unknowns. Mystery boxes.

And because we can't know how they will turn out (and in most cases haven't seen them play with our own eyes--much less draw any competent conclusions about them as prospects even if we had), we look to things like "expert rankings" to help us sleep well with the comforting conclusion that it was a good pick.

When the consensus rankings say it was a reach, like in the case of Cowan, we can't feel warm and fuzzy and we freak out instead.

I knew the player, I thought he was small with bad numbers and didn’t bring the physicality the leafs need. IMO, they should have been searching for some of that. Instead, they drafted yet another sub-6 foot forward after so many previously did not work. Left many of us disappointed.

I’m not going to jump the gun in preseason but it’s clear the kid has a motor and plays much harder than most which is also something the leafs need.
