You lost me there.

Where else could he play if not with the Knights?

IMO, it's naive to think how he looked in a 1/2 speed pre-season game would carry over to the season.
Let him go back, play WJHC and win a Mem Cup. Think everyone will be better off in the long run.

I don't see him lasting the year, but I could see him hanging around after the OHL season starts, and then being sent down.

If he's one of the better players on the ice, he's one of the better players on the ice.

On the winner the vets were trash ... so yes, Cowan is shown his mistake ... as should the vets who were on the ice when the winner was scored.

We have to give credit to the currently assembled MLSE front office for not whiffing on their late 1st round/2nd round picks. I'm now only unconvinced in the potential of one of the 7 picked in this category (Hirvonen) going back to 2018 which is a high hit rate for legit prospects. I'll emphasize the word prospects as none could pan out as long term NHLers (unlikely) but at this time all have a real shot at NHL careers.

No need for 9 games imo. Let him stay in training camp/pre season for an extended period of time and then let him get ready for his year in London where he will play a prominent role.

If everything goes well this year and he has a strong preseason next year, then it would be time for a 9 game look.

What are the odds percentage wise that Cowan gets a 9 game look to start the regular season before getting sent back to London if he continues to impress?

None. I watched the interview and that tweet is very misleading. Keefe didn't say that unprompted, someone followed up a question about how good Cowan played with if he will be in camp longer and he just said "yes"

Score one for Dubas, at least that's the way it looks so far.

I mean Sandin is a talented offensive Dman that should regularly put up tons of points in the regular season but he's also someone that is extremely questionable defensively, has weak overall skating and is a smaller player.

He got absolutely wrecked when he was inserted into a prime top 4 role with WAS.

The trade was always going to hang on who we selected and needing that player to hit or it would be a very bad trade, so it's good that it looks like we made a great pick.

Knights first regular season game is this Friday. I’m torn I would like to see him gets some more games with the Leafs but I also want him to be back for knights opener

I dunno, I think he'll be up for the duration of the pre-season/exhibition games and then sent back to London. Pretty much a 0% chance that they keep him up all season so IMO better to just let him get back there to dominate and hopefully crack a spot in the WJs.

FYI.

Easton Cowan is not currently on the radar of the 2024 WJC selection team..

Here was the summer camp roster for the 2024 early participants for this years WJC for Canada. .

PS, Fraser Minten was invited and attended on behalf of the Leafs.

He will be.

His positive impressions early have him in a practice group that is very clearly the NHL squad.

Well deserved, smart of the Team to reward him.

Dubas didn't draft Cowan, that was Brad Treliving as GM that approved the selection as his 1st draft selection as Leafs new GM.
As mentioned, Dubas traded for the pick and since Treliving wasn't really allowed to be involved in the draft, it was definitely the leftover Dubas scouting stuff that wanted Cowan. Doubt Treliving had much input.

Do they decide who stays and who goes based on draft position?

So if you are a top 5 pick you get to stay on your NHL team if you are one of the best players on your team? If you are too small, say 5'10", 185 lbs. are you sent back to junior?

Or perhaps a team could let performance help determine that?

I know, I know ... predetermination is always best course of action.

For Cap strapped Teams, the Cap is what dictates many moves.

Here we separate the men from the boys.

Sure, Cowan got a couple points....against minor league opponents, going half speed.

He needs at least a year of seasoning with the Marlies or back in junior if eligible.
