If Hirvonen's footspeed can translate to the pro game, we'll have a very valuable player.

Good vision, great hands, good playmaking ability, good hockeysense and goes to the front of the net and will be involved in the greasy goals. Almost a throwback type player with his high level skill but quite feisty and physical.

His playstyle looks similar to Marchand but just a step slower.

But he doesn't look slower than his peers

Any time Hirvonen had the puck in the neutral zone it lead to a clean entry... either by him carrying it or a good pass to someone else. Raty and Kemell are more talented and will be better NHL players, but he's the one that makes the line work.

Is this just a tournament to let Canada and the US warm up before they meet in the final?

Even a plug and play Kerfoot type for ELC money is a steal.

Kids are so well spoken now these days......Geezzz

That Struele kid is sooo well spoken

Cooley is a puck hog
Knies all alone in front and cooley decides to try to beat 4 players on the way to the net
I question cooley and his hockey IQ

Luke hughes looks impressive
I've noticed a lot of the US players tend to look eachother off and go for a shot first, even if it's not from a good spot.

Us looks terrible.. just disjointed in my opinion

Hughes looks pretty smooth mid summer.. jesus jersey has some stuff to look forward to

Lackluster start from knies. 0 points, 12 US goals.

His entire line (and PP unit) has been lacklustre, and he has had some things called back or had his line mates fail to convert.

He is also being used as a grinder because he is the only guy with size on his line.

Niemela has looked less impressive to me, but for some reason he is not being used on the PP instead of Heimosalmi and Puutio... And most of Finland's offense is the Kemell, Hirvonen, and Raty line. Everyone else is pretty much doing nothing, and at least Niemela is doing well defensively (which is no surprise considering that is his calling card).

Really, I don't think any team has really "impressed" thus far besides the ones who were more underdogs and have actually put together some decent periods together (Latvia, Switzerland, Slovakia, etc.). Finland, Canada, USA, Sweden, Czechia, etc. have all looked sloppy at different points.

:I disagree, he had his chances used his body to win pucks and showed he wasn't scared to dig in the corners. Whenever the was a rebound infront of the net he caused the German defense problems.

Could of had 2 goals tonight. Didn't look slow, had good hands.

Needs to work more on his agility and edges, maybe a harder shot. He was noticable to me.
Cooley isnt a good fit for Knies

Cooley isnt a good fit for Knies

Luckily, they get to play together all year. A lot of undisciplined game for Cooley, but he does have talent. Knies just isn't clicking with these guys. He's doing a lot right, but isn't being rewarded on the score sheet. Knies is a pretty big kid, but he doesn't strike me as being that strong, and will need to increase his strength to be a "power forward" in the NHL.

I also consider the fact that this tourney is in mid-summer and some guys aren’t in mid-season form like they normally would be in this tournament.

It’s a grinders tournament where teams that play the best systematically and work the hardest will win out. Winning on skill alone is tough to do when you haven’t played meaningful games in a few months.

Isn't the general consensus the opposite?

Players aren't in peak condition, systems aren't as well practiced, meaning more breakdowns, more fatigue that skill can exploit.

Did he click at the prospects camp?

Just asking, I heard he didn't produce much there either.

He is looking slow... skating and conditioning should be the focus.. keep it simple

Everyfhing else is there.. edges size skill awareness

No, disappointing development camp, and disappointing start to the WJC. You can see there’s definite talent and upside there, but I think he’s clearly not as far along as many thought he was. Agreed with the comments that he needs to work on his skating and conditioning - he looks a bit slow out there.

I remember there was some talk about him joining the Leafs for the playoffs last year, but IMO he’s definitely not NHL ready. Needs another year in college, then a year or 2 in the AHL, taking that time to especially focus on skating, conditioning, strength and explosiveness.

Love how he steals and protects the puck, just one of those guys where once he’s close to the puck, it’s his. However, he needs to combine that with the speed and conditioning to be flying around the ice every shift, that’s lacking right now. Good enough for college, but it stands out as not good enough when playing with/against higher end talent, like Leafs development camp and the WJC.

I mean, you are a kid working hard in the summer, to build your game... shouldn't your skating and conditioning be at it's peak in the offseason?
