Well optics and the money involved are two entirely different issues and optics seem to prevail over everything else these days. So really, you haven't given an argument why my (possible) theory is wrong.
IIRC, your argument was that the WJHC - if allowed to continue - whilst cancelling the womens' tournament is bad optics...? My contention is I don't think optics was the main consideration. It's hardly a secret that mens' tournaments makes more money than womens' tournaments (FIFA World Cup being the apotheosis). IMO, the IIHF wouldn't have given up the $$$ from the 2022 World Juniors continuing as is, if other things hadn't been more of a consideration (their liability for the players'/officials' health and the integrity of the game). If I'm wrong about how the revenue from the World Juniors would have been distributed (maybe IIHF doesn't get much $$$ from this tournament?), I'm happy to be corrected.

In any event, I heard the IIHF President remark they will look at possibly holding the 2022 U-20 World Juniors sometime in the summer of 2022. (I think he also mentioned trying to do the same for the cancelled womens' tournament) Hopefully, they can make it work.

An additional five players tested for COVID-19 among tests taken Wednesday prior to the cancellation of the World Junior Hockey Championship.
TSN Hockey Insiders Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie report the positives included players on Canada, Slovakia, Germany and two members of Team Sweden. Additionally, one staff member and on-ice official also tested positive.

The IIHF made the right decision to cancel the tournament! I applaud them to have the courage to put health and safety first!

Post #1 quotes how IIHF and Hockey Canada (the organizer) are getting blame for insufficient Covid protocols; post #2 already blames IIHF only; and there we go.

Come on, guys. IIHF has plenty of warts, but it's fair to say this was a joint fukup. Accommodation seems to have been the main contributing factor. Isn't that usually for the host to arrange?

Nut up and own up, where appropriate.

Now that's a stretch, but I commend your effort. U are an iihf employee I presume?

At least two young players died playing hockey this year. Why do we play the game at all? Not one death is worth the entertainment.

The US averages 3.4 high school football deaths per year. We also had 42,000 deaths from car accidents in 2020.

Should we ban HS football and driving, or just driving because it has 10000 times as many deaths per year?

People die from slipping in the shower. Do we ban that too?

It was the right decision made. It is very unfortunate that months of planning has gone out the window. However, at the end of the day after Team USA forfeitted their game, and with all the players/officials now being affected- it would have been irresponsible to not postpone/cancel this tournament right now.

All for one & one for all, Hockey Canada with Edmonton for not tightening the bubble, IIHF for not stepping up when finding out any wrongdoings. when Slovakia hosted the tournaments IIHF inspectors during several
inspection trips checked out arenas, hotels, paid attention even to details - Steel Arena had to replace boards, Nepela arena replaced lights. Couldn’t believe my eyes when reading about wedding reception in hotel in the middle of pandemics. Comedy gold

Obviously.

484k new cases is actually less per capita than what Finland is seeing now.

The interesting part, current hospitalizations are all Delta yet current new cases are mostly Omicron. The gubmint over here just imposed a heavy restrictions regime (again) for three weeks; the logic seems to be to curb the last hurrah of Delta to keep healthcare from getting overloaded, but then Omicron won't be as straining (and the stubborn unvaxxed can just get stuffed). Granted, we don't know for sure, as this gubmint is somewhat poor in communicating why they do what they do, and our mainstream media is as crappy as everywhere else, but this seems to be the logic.

Anyways, you kinda need to report what new cases you're/they're getting, and give the impact with it too. This bugger is shifty.

Exactly, ban everything just lock the doors and stay home.

Note, this doesn't work for everyone. I'm old enough to remember when eLiTe tYpInG was just kewl to do, just 1334 ya know, not denoting any sarcasm. If you want max impact, use the smileys sorry emojis.

Some of y'all are weird.

Unless I'm suddenly bad at math, 484K new cases makes USA's per capita number 3.2 times worst than Finland's.

Really? By what evidence? Also, the US forfeiture should be re-scinded in light of the subsequent decision(s).

I agree 100%. Unfortunately that has been lost on a huge majority of people. I get we are all hockey fans here, and of course would of loved to have it continue, but in times like this it just wasn't possible

I agree 100% this omicron variant is spreading like wildfire!

And yet, it was possible to hold and play out this tournament last year, a markedly worse time for the world, one where vaccines weren’t widely available and COVID was running a full ramp of destruction on the world.

Begs some questions. Mainly of the organizers and bureaucrats who chose to roll the dice and penny pinch instead of safeguarding the players in a bubble. Which has proven to be a successful format across several levels of amateur/pro hockey.
