If this tournament had been cancelled well before it started because in this present situation it couldn't be held it would already be forgotten but this fiasco of starting the tournament but then being forced to cancel it will be remembered for years to come.

Last year, almost no players were vaccinated and only the players positive were put on quarantine. This year - 4 positives and cancel tournament.
Another odd thing - Teams were required to be on site 15.12. Except Canada! Team Canada was allowed to come 20.12. WTF? Aatu Räty wasnt allowed to join Team Finland, because he wasnt there 15.12.

So wait, was the Russian covid positive test a false positive?
That;s what I just read in Slovak media. Michkov's agent Sergey Fedotov said that after Michkov was tested positive, he took another test from the doctor of Russian team, and it was negative. Yet, wasn't allowed to play.

Testing has to be done by 3rd party to avoid any potential violation. Not saying they did it now but Russians are thrown out of most international games because of cheating (doping)

The least they could have done was retest (3rd test) Michkov but did not because they clearly panicked and shat their pants.

They test everyone, vaccines give about 70-80 % immunity for the covid. Very few of them get the harsh effects. I'm vaccinated yet got it 2 weeks ago. The teams should've been in a buble, but weren't. Also they shuld not have quarentined the whole teams, just the players with positive test results.
They should"ve gone with the strategy of testing them with symptoms. And isolate if there are positive ones there. You got to draw aline somewhere. This is taking it to far (isolating asymptomatic young vaccinated people and groups around them) with more damage to people in general than helping them.

The IIHF has much lower treshold to cancel the games, they are not forced to go on like NHL of NFL. It’s not also their assets in the line.

The infections were already trending upwards and it would have been a disaster by the playoffs. Foremost sport-wise USA lost their chance when they had to forfeit.

If they manage to reschedule to summer it’s more than enough. Just have a proper bubble then.

The problem with that is the fact that it's too late at that point to stop the spreading of the virus and no organization can afford that. The best would've been just to isolate the players with positive tests and if it wasn't enough (=positives keep coming) only then quarintene the team.

They could have ran the tournament in a Bubble like last year ....

Hockey Canada only cares about $$$ .....

Between TSN and Hockey Canada .. The entire tournament has become sort of sickening anyways .. with the endless Advertisements and half the games are unwatchable with opponents who don't match up .... No tears from my corner!

Honestly, the IIHF is a democratic organization and I recon most posting on this board have been or even still is a member of an organization which together with others constitute the IIHF.

The current leadership obviously is not up for the task. Who are they? How do we kick them out and ban them from ever setting a foot in a hockey arena again?

Doubt the accomodations was on IIHF? I`m pretty sure the country arranging the tournament and their respective hockey federations are in charge of that? This "Hey you`ll live in a hotel opened for everyone and all are running around without masks and btw - there will be a wedding with multiple drunk persons running around" is on Hockey Canada...
The semi-bubble and no quarantine for single players and cancelled games with walk-over though is on IIHF

The entire tournament implementation structure needs to change.

The IIHF needs more on-the-ground authority and oversight. Too much decision making and responsibility is put on the host Federation and organizing committee.

Last year Hockey Canada put on marvelously well run tournament. It was their idea to hold it in a 'bubble' based on conditions. The planning and execution was fantastic. And the IIHF didn't have much to do with any of it.

But this year's tournament was a farce. This shitshow of a disaster couldve been avoided if there was more strict oversight and communal decision making.
What a mess.

nice article from russian POW - Vasil Ponomaryov
Пономарёв – о сборной: у кого-то вчера был положительный, а сегодня отрицательный тест

“Woke up at 9 am, did the exercises, then breakfast and team meeting. Everything was fine. Returned to my room, brushed teeth & washed face and lay down to read a book. When finishing the last page of the book, someone wrote to the (whatsup) group that there would be no game today, We had to sit in rooms as we forfeited the game. Phoned to my parents, came to the conclusion that nothing terrible happened, we need to prepare for the next match with the USA. And then the information comes up that the tournament has been canceled.

Michkov's test positive? Not sure who but someone tested false positive. Why false positive? Because, according to the staff, it was positive yesterday and negative today. There is no exact information yet.

All the guys in the team are very upset, in a difficult state of mind. This is the last youth world championship in your career for many. There was definitely no such a "bubble" as in previous year. Organization was good, there was discipline: no one broke the rules, everyone sat in their rooms, not going anywhere. None of the guys can be blamed for what happened. This means that infection was inside our hotel.

Gotta love the world we live in where people are more outraged about a hockey tournament being canceled than kids not being able to attend school in person

Hate how the internet has given literally the dumbest people on earth (with zero education or knowledge) a platform to speak a bunch of shit

The site is called HFboards (with the H standing for hockey), not school boards.

We see the same pattern of sports orgs foundering in the absence of official institutional leadership. Getting caught up in the little details is, frankly, silly.

The Cornell University outbreak that occurred 2 weeks ago told anyone with information, and some intelligence what was coming. But governments at every single level, in nearly every country, are caught unable to act. Railing about the IIHF in this context is a thing one could waste their time on.
