Not necessarily the thread for this but I think we might be hitting a rough stretch where goaltenders are concerned. The next batch looks pretty underwhelming. Terrible draft this year.

It was already talked about back in December and even before the tournament, so this is nothing new. The 2002's have one good goalie, and then little else. Commesso after a tough start to the season got better, and only ended up with a SV% that was .001 worse than his freshman season. He should be pretty good for this tournament. I'm not worried about that.

But the overall point is a valid one. There's almost nothing for the 2003's. The 2004's aren't that good. Although, I think the draft results are pretty stupid, Muszelik gets drafted because he's 6'2 and Silverstein doesn't because he's 6'0. No one would actually suggest Muszelik is the better junior goalie, so it doesn't matter for this type of tournament. Silverstein is one of the best 2004 goalies around the world, as long as he's healthy. Eventually, he should be good enough to be the starter, but that shouldn't be needed until December.

The 2023 draft goalies also should be much better, so while you are correct about the draft results from 2020 to 2022 with goalies, I don't think it's a cause for long-term concern yet.

Isn't Commesso not coming to this tournament or did I misinterpret earlier news about him not being on the initial camp list?

I’m not sure, but I didn’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be able to play, so I interpreted that news as if he only wasn’t showing up to camp.

Guys like Beniers, Sanderson, and Commesso not there. I have to imagine it's because they're locks and with such a big camp to pick 2 teams, they're getting the break.

No Perreault either. Would be weird to still have a passport issue.

There is potentially 2-3 1st round forwards not making this team. I am including Stramel in that group as well. We might not even need a goalie with this offense...good lord this team is loaded outside of the net.

How did that work for the U18 team in the gold medal game? This team is going to really miss Commesso.

On our board it was being said he isn't playing period because he is taking summer classes and wants to start off right away with BU. If he isn't in camp I don't know how ready he would even be for the tourney if he does decide to come.

I'm not saying he will play just that it's wrong to assume because he's not at camp that he's already out of the tournament. USAH is far more interested in evaluating who the goalies will be for the 2023 team in the camp.

If Commesso skips out on the actual tournament it's a pretty stupid move.

I agree. I don't get the summer class stuff either, no better way to start your season off than winning Gold for your country. I think it is best if we just focus on our other goalies for now and if he does come then that's the cherry on top!

Bourdealeau and Behrens replace Beniers and Sanderson. Both missed 6 months ago due to Covid. Who replaces Smilanic who isn’t at camp and if does not play is a bit tougher. It could be an 02 like Doan who was one of the final cuts (love that they invited some 02s to camp) or go with the upside/versatility of Cutter Gauthier. Ufko is likely next D up if anyone else drops out. Goalie is another discussion…

Top 9 in ice time seems set with guys that can step in if needed behind them. These are just lines based on 6 months ago..Knies and Mazur are legit studs

Berard - Bordeleau - Coronato
Knies - Cooley - Mazur
Slaggert -James/Dickinson (recovering from knee surgery) - Mackie Samo
Pastujov - Savage - Lucius (wild cards who didn’t seem to be trusted 6 months ago)
Cutter/Doan - They can pretty much be inserted anywhere

Very strong D core

Kaiser - Faber (played well together 6 months ago)
Behrens - Hughes (played together at ntdp)
Kleven- Moore
Peart - Morrow

I expect Peart to play a key role. Was a stud at St Cloud and was stepping up nicely for us 6 months ago..

Achilles heel…

Silverstein/Mbereko
Muszelik or Holt

I haven’t seem Flores enough. This team will be a favorite with Commesso
