Anyone with any insight/thoughts on the line/pairing combos? Was looking forward to seeing Hughes in the top-4 and with some PP time, but from his usage today I don’t think he’ll be used in a situation where he’ll be able to contribute to his full potential unfortunately. More of a 3rd pairing/PK style. His role will likely increase next year. Will those lines/pairing stick? Was it the staff trying things out?

Hughes didn't have a very good game today IMO. Very casual with the puck. I think his usage will be directly dependent on his decision making and the confidence the coaching staff has in him.

Yes, his game today was so-so, but watching jim with Michigan I’m pleasantly surprised with his defensive game and overall transition game this season. He’s a great skater. He’s clearly skilled enough to be a top-4 guy for the US imo. I think he’ll look better as the tournament goes on, but we shall see. He’ll most certainly have a bigger role next year, if he doesn’t this year. Thanks for the reply!

Trying stuff out. They will change throughout the tournament. The best players will play the most when the games matter.

Its different case tho, Raty did not get covid but was out for protocol
Bordeleau missed last year just for protocol and couldn't join. (Actually his Michigan teammate had a false positive which sent him to protocol- they found out before the games started and he still couldn't go)

For those of you looking to take a break from the 24 hours of "A Christmas Story" being re-run. NHL Network is showing all the USA U20 Gold Medal games in succession. Starting with the insane, up n down 2010 game.

Amazing how many great names are on both US and Canada in the 2010 Gold Medal game. Remembering how loud the arena was as well.

The silence after Carlson won it in OT sure was golden too

How did Knies slip that low in his draft?

He's a big power forward with slick hands, speed and an underrated shot. Still soo young still too...

Keep an eye on this kid.
He got Covid early into last season and came back and didn't play great after coming back from it for a while. Not as many games to scout so he got somewhat lost in the shuffle. Most likely not the only one that happened to because of Covid last year/this year.

I didn’t think he was that bad early last season. Points weren’t there, even though he wasn’t playing poorly. And you are right about COVID. He also had an injury, but I think it was bad scouting more than anything. His skating combined with full season point totals is likely why he slipped for those that had him as outside of the first round.

Lambos was another one.

Pretty shocked that it appears Savage wasn't suspended. I'm guessing he got a pass because the IIHF thinks him costing his team the (meaningless) game was punishment enough. I'll be disappointed if he's dressed or anything above the 13th forward role.

I have to disagree. I get the idea of punishing a guy that messed up a game with a bad hit, but it’s an exhibition, so do we really care about the result so much?

Savage may be needed at some point. Trying to put him in the dog house so early on for something that hasn’t actually cost us anything would be too harsh for my liking. I’m sure he knows himself that what he did cost the team the game. We don’t want him playing scared later on in the tournament if he’s needed. He’ll derive confidence from gentler treatment, in my opinion.

We don't care about the exhibition result but we should care about the selfish play. Special teams often make or break teams in the WJC. Let's not forget he threw a borderline hit earlier in the exhibition, too. He needs to earn trust, not be given it freely.

I'm also not calling for drastic punishment. He shouldn't have been more than the 11th or 12th forward at best as an '03 anyway, so saying he should be the extra isn't that big of a deal.
