WJC: 2022 Team Finland roster talk

Everyone speaking about how Lambert should get more this and that, and yes i agree he should've played like at least half of the 3v3, it's literally where he shines. How are no one speaking about Kemell, he needs to be on the ice on just about every important situation. Also someone needs to inform the powerplay squads that at least Czechia had scouted Kemell's shot and closed in every time Puutio had the puck. It's not rocket sience to rotate to the other side when the opponent clearly plays out your #1 shot.

Don't understand what Pennanen is thinking.

-Karvinen is useless, Liukas in plesse.
-Puutio playing on the left side most of the time, where he sucked
-Rotating Koivunen and Lambert?

First line was great but not a very good game otherwise.
I noticed that defensively his positioning isn't great, which makes sense if he isn't comfortable on his offside. Still tied for the team league for goals

Probably because Kemell has already been getting tons of ice time?

Lambert only played 15 minutes.

Koivunen - Helenius - Lambert line has been playing poorly, so makes sense to do some changes.
Also, Nurmi started as top pair and now out of the lineup. lol. Should've just picked Rami Määttä.

Koivunen has been surprisingly bad, i saw him as potential leader of the team. Helenius as well.
Lambert has been far better than his linemates and everyone who has an agenda against him and will state anything else are just full of it.

Meriläinen, Nurmi, Rafkin, Väisänen, Karvinen, Kapanen, and Viro has not impressed me that much either. Overall the performance has been underwhelming to say the least, especially the defence and goaltending.

I believe Nurmi is overrated by quite few.
Regarding Viro then, i expected a bit more of him. Thought he would skate circles round some opponents at this level but haven't seen anything special.
Niemelä then? Well, i do think he has been our best defender even if expect a whole lot more of him because he has already dominated this tournament two times. Niemelä, Heimosalmi and Puutio have been decent in some aspects but not that fully convincing by any means.

Hopefully Jatkola can be a lot better than Meriläinen because with him (Meriläinen) playing like that we won't stand a chance against Canada, Sweden nor USA.

Using Lambert as the bumper man is a really strange decision. In general some of the usage decisions have been very odd... Team has an obvious lack of dynamism down the middle and decides to play Lambert at RW?

Just very strange.

I'm assuming Pennanen didn't defensively trust Kemell and Lambert for OT.
Kapanen and Määttä getting ice time during OT confirms this, I think.
I have been thinking this longer now and it was very wise to not play those two at OT. Making bad turnoff and result loss in a meaningless game/situation would easily ruin confidence and put their game to wrong track. Yes it still feels weird decision but there was more to lose than win with both players and neither them was even that hot.. Kemell was put on the ice at very last moment so it was safety move.

I don't understand the widespread Lambert hate in Finland - is it because of the team shopping and his difficult dad? He seems obviously very talented and even those mistakes are rarely that disastrous. With some confidence and bit calmer decision making he will have a great future, I'm quite certain.

It is because of poor and stupid way of playing. Bad decision making, hanging on to the puck way too much with blinders on, until he turns the puck over. Nothing else really. And I wouldn’t call it really hate. If he starts playing well at some point, I can assure you that I, as one of his harshest criticizers, will change my opinion on him. But just a game or two will not do it - he needs to play a lot better, and more consistently. Players should be judged on how well they are playing, and as he has been sucking big time with his play, he has deserved a lot of critique.

I have to also question it if he is really as talented as some people seem to think? He is a very talented skater and he has pretty good hands and even a quite good shot. But he seems to have quite low hockey IQ and also problems with his vision. I don’t think a player with those kind of weaknesses is necessarily very talented - even if the skating is world class. Hockey isn’t all about skating - even if it seems to be fashionable to think so. If it was that simple, guys like Athanasiou, Byron, Wood, Kapanen and Kempe would be truly dominating the league like McDavid or MacKinnon are doing.

Yeah, but I think Anthanasiou, Byron, Kempe etc. are very good hockey players and Lambert could have that kind of potential. Very useful player for NHL-team for depth scoring. If you are looking for a dominant player for top-6, go look elsewhere.pal.

After all for a hockey player to reach even that kind of level of the mentioned players, it's 0,00001%

Also it seems that not many people seem to understand the fundamentals of team Finland, whether it's the A-team or U20 etc.

All lines plays as one, 5 players always beats 1 player. They have well tailored roles and jobs what they need to do, in order for that line to function. Obviously there's room for individual plays and moments of artistry, but you can't cheat in certain aspects of the game, you can't. Otherwise that line starts to leak and that machine breaks eventually.

This is why they have benched Lambert so many times, and he hasn't shown anything to compensate that. If you don't play together with your linemates, then you need to be extremely efficient, score goals. Like Puljujärvi when he played at the U-18 WC, he was so good that he had free hands basically, Lambert isn't that good.

Well, let hockey be our judge - I'm pretty confident that he will have an excellent NHL career. He has plenty of tools for that.
