Winnipeg Ice will completely destroy the WHL with other teams depleted of their best players and them keeping McClennon, Savoie and Geekie
Geekie isn’t really a surprise but the other two should have gotten invites for sure!

I liked him a lot of his draft year but... Jack Finley has 12 points in 18 games this season. He also happens to be 6'6. I think it's very clear what they're going for with this team and I don't think it worked that well in the past.

Agreed; this stood out to me as well. Leaving off guys like Savoie and Clarke infuriates me even more with the 25 man roster. There's going to be a few guys in the stands each game, and if the team is struggling to score I'd rather my reserve players have game breaking speed and skill than be grinder types.

Because running soft, one dimensional offensive playmakers on the bottom 6 last year worked out amazingly for "one of the best WJC teams ever assembled".

You don't need a bottom six. The team should have a go-to defensive line, though that line should still be able to score some, and then three strong talented lines. NHL teams had a bottom six because there are so many teams that talent is stretched thin. Not an issue for Canada 2022 at the WJC. A one-off result from a year ago shouldn't lead to selecting a worse path.

It definitely seems like Hockey Canada has a certain identity in mind for this team. If it works then it works and that's great but if it doesn't those involved will deservedly get tons of shit.

They lost 2-0 to the 19 year Olds from USA's best USNTDP team ever. They hit multiple posts and Knight played great. How exactly does having less firepower prevent you from getting shutout?

Last years team didn't lose because of a lack of grit, they lost because there was one team in the tournament capable of beating them and they didn't meet until the Gold medal game. That Canadian team faced 0 adversity throughout the tournament. It sounds dumb but sometimes a team needs to lose a game to really see what isn't working.

On top of that it was one game. Anything can happen in one game. And don't forget that Canada's best player (and captain) was injured before the tournament even started. Having one more elite piece could have put them over the top.

Literally all of these guys would have been on my team. Insanity.

Othmann and Savoie are objectively FAR superior to Cuylle, Dean, Desnoyers, Dufour, Finley, Roy, and Sourdif at the LEAST.

Clarke is objectively FAR superior to the majority of the defensemen invited.

This is f***ing stupid even if we win gold.

And giving an objective take because I’m biased towards both these players, I don’t know how they come up with Cuylle over Othmann. That seems like picking a player because he’s a year older. A lot of these HC selections seem to be about picking the 19 year olds and picking grit. They actually took a 16 year old that probably didn’t deserve it, yet left off a bunch of deserving 18 year olds. If you are going to have hard and fast rules, be consistent. Don’t decide Bedard has too high potential to be subject to the rules. I don’t understand it.

Wow!! They invited the Quebecors?! What a pleasant shock, is it because they lost last year after picking none while the Americans won with 2 of them on their roster? I hope theyre not just fake invites and some of them actually make the team

Bedard is the most egregious selection. The kid flat out didn’t earn it. Meanwhile, guys like Clarke and Othmann are lighting it up a year after being first round picks and can’t get into the camp. Savoie is lighting it up as a draft eligible and doesn’t make it.
Dont worry though...despite this being his 5th year in the WHL, and he's never once actually reached the point per game pace, Jack Finley is getting invited because he's 6 foot 6.

In terms that might be familiar to you, these selections and inclusions feel like a Scott Sandelin-type production

Lmao he’s been one of the best defenceman in the CHL all year but you don’t like his knock kneed stride? This is a legitimate reason to not even give him an invite lol?

jfc
I said he should of been invited and had him on my team.

Shocked with Bedard a little bit.

Unless I missed them no Savoie’s.

Still puzzled about the Clarke omission

I get it (Bedard). Even if he's cut, going through the process is important for him and hockey Canada. He's a big part of the next WJC team so having him learn through camp is important. If he makes the team, even better. They know this kid is going to be leading the team in a year, they need him ready.

That being said, they passed on some players who had earned the chance, which is a bit of a snub to those players. It should actually light a fire in them more and may end up helping their careers (to prove HC wrong).

Well you never know things might work out I remember the 2018 had a lot of surprising descions. Jonah Gadjovich over nick suzuki for one. But overall you get the feeling Hockey Canada is overthinking this how do you not even invite Clarke and the Savoies at the very least they should get the opportunity to earn their way on to the team. As Pavel rightly points out they've done more than Bedard during the season.
