I don't know a lot of the Russian guys very well but aren't they supposed to be very strong up front this year?, like on par or maybe even better?
Me neither, but I was reading complaints that the Russians left all of their North American guys at home, with Petrov highlighted as someone who should have been on the team. I don’t think he would have been in the running for our team if he was Canadian, despite the gaudy point totals, so on that flimsy basis I will stand by my comment!

Not sure they’re deeper than Canada, but this definitely looks like a strong forward roster for Russia. Definitely a tourney favourite, in my books.

Was hoping they would give Bedard a chance. Especially with how well he played in the tryouts.

want to see

Johnson Mactavish Bedard

Haven't seen much of Sourdif and he is riding shot gun on a very good line. What should I expect in his game?

Really like the look of that line as well. Hope Cameron is smart enough to try it together.

Sourdif from the games I've watched is a smart, reliable player but doesn't have any particularly stand-out qualities. Skating, shot, compete etc are all good but nothing that ever screamed NHLer to me. I'm still confused why he was a lock over a lot of other guys to be honest but Hockey Canada is familiar with him and I expect as a 19 year-old he'll have a quiet, effective tournament.

I was quite disappointed with Sourdif at the Hlinka Gretzky tourney, even though he ended up at a point-per-game. I don’t even recall what it was specifically that I had a problem with, just that his play was generally underwhelming. However, that was a small sample size and he has been consistently producing for the Giants the last couple seasons, so I will definitely give him a second look.

You are making me feel really old then. The first WJC I watched was 1991, when it was held in Saskatchewan, and I was 9 years old. Canada beat the Soviets in an epic final game. Eric Lindros was amazing the entire tournament. No disputing the fact that the 2005 team was the greatest Canada ever sent to the WJC.

I took my son to the pre-tournament exhibition game between Canada and Switzerland in 2004. It was amazing to see how many pucks Syd the Kid stripped on backchecks. Like one every shift.

I don't think he's the best goalie.
If you're basing it off stats, you can't compare. The WHL only plays within their conferences, and the quality of competition is very different.

On the eye test I think Cossa is the better of the two.

They're both pretty good, but I think Cossa has all the athleticism that Garand has, and the extra size to boot.

Keep in mind that Garand has better stats playing on a worse team.

They have a strong group, but Canada has more top talent, and arguably depth. We have 8 forwards who are currently first round picks, with another 2 projected to go first overall. That said, Russia is easily 2nd.

Replacing Bourque with Bedard in the top 6 would probably be the most skilled top 6 they could ice. I would love to see that play out in the coming days.

I’ve only seen Guenther play 1-2 times but I’ve never been particularly impressed.

Hopefully he proves me wrong.

I like that setup for the defencemen. We'll see what the forwards do.
