Cuylle is a 2nd round pick with 18 goals in 22 games this year.

For all the crap people are giving about "grinders" its getting a little hard to listen to. Stankoven is 5'7, his first year where he would be seriously considered and he still made the team. The U-18s are a completely different beast, I wouldn't expect or necessarily want those guys playing together and I'm the type that doesnt want them to leave young guys at home.

Bedard should (and will) get his playing time, dont stress about lineups before they've even hit the ice. But whining about Sourdif and Cuylee playing over a guy like Stankoven is kinda ridiculous. Its not that theyre grinders, its that they dont play a flashy skill game. BUT theyre both really effective hockey players and bring a lot to the table that a guy like Stankoven doesnt.

Like Cuylle is almost a goal a game in the OHL and we're complaining about him before they even play any games? Kinda ridiculous
Big time agree. Haven't even played a game yet lol.

If Coach Cameron screws it up again this year, Hockey Canada needs to make this guy the coach next year.

Cameron’s issue against the Russians 10 years ago was in the third period he went away from what had worked very well for Canada in the past 5 periods against the USA and Russia; a forecheck that sealed the wall in the offensive zone and a gummed up neutral zone where chances went to die. Whether or it was tactical or executional in that third period we will never know. But Canada backed off the wall pressure in the offensive zone and allowed the top Russian line to gain the red line easier and sustain more possession in one period than they had in the prior two, and when you let Kuznetsov, Tarasenko and Panarin have time the result was bound to be bad. I hope if the situation is similar this year he coaches to win the game instead of trying not to lose it

Aren't you doing the same bullshit putting down Stankoven's game over Cuylle because he's small and skilled?

No because there were people in here saying its a travesty that Cuylle made the team and that hes a grinder. Stankoven is a good player, deserves to be there but hes not a perfect player either. Hes a mid second round pick just last year, its not like we're talking about some for sure cant miss player. And Cuylle is good in his own right, drafted in a similar round, a year older, big, physical with a wicked shot that has been lighting it up.

The only one doing any "bullshit" is people acting like Cuylles play didnt put him on this team and that hes only there because hes big. I have no issue wuth Stankoven being there, I have an issue with people who have probably never watched him play but read a flashy scouting report putting him on a pedestal over another very effective player ebcause he plays differently

I can't get over this team bringing so many "grinder" types and placing them in big roles over guys that are more proven to put the puck in the net at elite rates. They must be overcompensating the hell out of losing the gold medal game last year, and it doesn't make any sense. Par for the course with HC. What's even worse is that they have the ability to go full-nuclear in their top-6 by having their 6 most talented forwards and production guys play together (especially their top-line with Perfetti, Johnson, and Wright), while still having very strong 3rd line (and a shutdown 4th), and straight up refuse to get away from it. Like Canada knows how good Bedard-McTavish-Stankoven were at U18's LAST YEAR and they're still breaking them up for reasons? They're using guys like Sourdif and Cuylle in prominent roles over Stankoven and Bedard and I have no idea why besides a dumb coach.

They still obviously have the best overall group in the tournament, but it's like they are trying to be closer to the rest of the teams instead of just blowing them out of the water with 4 lines of attacking. Mike Babcock at the Olympics trying to win 1-0 games against good teams instead of crushing them.

Just because players put pucks in the net doesn’t mean they fit the play style the coach wants to bring. There is lots of offence to go around on this team.

Any indication on who might get the start?

Wondering if they give one of them the whole game or if they’ll split the game between Garand and Cossa

Exciting times. Hopefully we see Bedard get some minutes in the top six but NOT at the expense, selfishly, of Bourgault.

Why does Hockey Canada do this to their star players. Bedard is the 2nd best player on the team. Just play him in the top 6. The politics aspect of the WJC is so boring.

Agree with the Bedard sentiments. Just let the kid play in the top 6, who cares he’s 16. If he shows he doesn’t belong, you move him down at that point.

We’ll all watch Michkov (sp) get all the opportunities in the world playing prime minutes for Russia, and Davey boy Cameron letting Bedard play <10m a night.

To say I’m worried about Cameron coaching would be an understatement.

As a huge Bedard fan, he definitely isn't the second best player on the team right now. But he might be the most capable of providing offense against the grain of play when the chips are down. The issue I see is that Canada has such a weak group that all the lines will look good and they might keep him in a limited role. Then once they face adversity in the medal rounds and need him, he won't have gotten comfortable with the level of play and won't be as effective. Much rather see him playing a regular role from the beginning and build confidence exposing lower pairing d-men, knowing he's your ace up the sleeve in important moments in big games.

This is the exact scenario that played out a few years back when Canada played Sweden and a then 16 year old Rasmus Dahlin rode the pine for two periods. When Sweden was down in the third they suddenly started to play him a ton, and surprise surprise, he was suddenly their best player. Unfortunately it was too late in the game and Sweden ran out of time, but had they trusted their phenom and played him from the start, it might have been a different outcome.

What are the politics? It isn't as if Bedard has been the second most impressive player this season and 16 year olds rarely do a lot at this tournament. Let's see what kind of minutes he gets tonight and if he shows that he should move up the lineup. I am hoping that he at the very least gets a chance to unleash his shot on the power play.

Chances are he gets some opportunities through this tournament. Some one gets banged up or under performs and he'll be in. He'll have to take advantage.

Bobby Margarita says those 2 are splitting the game tonight, Garand will likely start because hes the returning player but the actual starting role is up for grabs between those 2. Brochu is the clear third guy with the other 2 fairly even
