Yeah I agree that Wallinder not being on the roster is weird.
Grans, Edvinsson, Nyström, Lööf and Andrae was expected, perhaps they can't see Wallinder getting the role he deserves. Strange anyways and the reason being to keep a slot open for Holtz is very weird too.

Absolutely incredible that Wallinder was not selected. It's a joke. A 2002 born 32nd overall pick who has outperformed expectations since being drafted and is one of the best young defensemen in the SHL is somehow someone Monten wants to pass up on? Yeah lets pass up on a defenseman who averages 0.5 points per game in the SHL for 2003 born undrafted Victor Sjöholm who can't get any real minutes in the Allsvenskan.

If Holtz comes, I still think the team is good and that it has decent medal chances. But not selecting a hyped top prospect who would be our number 2/3 defenceman for is incredibly weird. I would expect Wallinder to be a top 10 defenseman at the tournament.

While I am also very surprised that Wallinder did not make the team (well, maybe not, 2021 - Helge Grans, 2020 - Victor Söderström), but Wallinder was definitely not competing with Sjöholm for a spot. Sjöholm is only there for his role as a shut-down defenseman who plays physical. But, Wallinder for sure should have been selected ahead of some of the other defensemen.

As for Sweden's chances, they will finish 3rd or 4th in the group behind Russia and Team USA. In the quarter final they will lose to either Canada or Finland.
Achieving something greater than that would be surprising IMO.

Sjöholm is not particularly good at those things you mentioned. It’s also strange that we bring guys like Öhgren, Dower Nilsson, Lekkerimäki or Strömgren over much worse options. Just bring your best players and focus less on roles.

I wonder why you are convinced the US and Finland will beat us? They absolutely do not have rosters that are clearly better.

Sjöholm is for sure not excellent, but this d core lacks physical defensemen and there is no denying he can play the body. With that said, I am not 100% sure I would have selected him myself, but he would not be competing with Wallinder for a spot since they are completely different type of players.

As for USA and Finland, not sure if you are familiar with their players at all? Finland, for instance, has twice as many returning players, several players that are seeing key-minutes and scoring at high pace in Liiga. Our highest scoring SHL players are two defensemen at 11 points. All our forwards at top level, except William Eklund, are basically seeing 0-10 min ice time per game in limited roles. Half of the Swedish forward crop would not make Team Finland's roster. They have just as good, if not better, top players as well.

But yeah, this is all on "paper". The fun thing about the World Juniors is that upsets do happen, although for Sweden during the past couple of years, it has mostly been a negative thing. Cruising through the group stage and then quickly/surprisingly being eliminated in the playoffs. Hopefully the tables have turned.

I know a bit about the USA and Finland teams. I don’t think Eklund, Niederbach, Rosen, Nybeck, Lysell, Olausson are really worse than the finnish top 6 forwards. Finland have 9 high end junior level forwards for me, so their forward group is definately better, but they have slightly worse defencemen and no Wallstedt. If we get Holtz I would not hold the finns against us. The US looks weaker than usual. They absolutely do not have a better forward group than Sweden if we get Holtz. They seem to have a great D-core though but not much better than ours.

I am no expert but the Russia and Canada rosters are the only ones that clearly, significantly beat us on paper for me.

If we get a medal in any value i will eat a whole Kalakukko bread. If we beat Finland in said medalgame, i will probably enjoy it too.

Received some inside info that the Wallinder omission was due to off-ice behavior. That would make sense, I guess. Never heard about character issues before when it comes to Wallinder, however

Would not surprise me if there were no off ice issues. They simply just have to leave one of the best players off every year for no reason.

THIS exactly THIS is what f***ing happens when you f***ing hire a f***ing coach that’s unable to hold on to a f***ing job that has anything to do with hockey outside of the f***ing stupid ass swedish hockey federation. Montén is the worst. But in reality it is not his fault that he got a job that he is terribly underqualified for.
He is just the symptom not the disease.

This is his last WJC as coach.

6 years of dissappointment.

It would have been more surprising if they didn't have at least one really really odd omission.
Swedish WJC teams have had weird roster choices for as long as I can remember. It pre-dates Montén even.

Do we know who will be the next U20 coach? What about Hallam from Växjö?

I don't want to comment on Wallinder, I remember how Monten din't nominate Söderström, it's not the first time Sweden has shot itself in the leg before the tournament.

I hope Hallam gets the senior job as a sidegig instead I dont understand why you’d need a full time employee for that
