Unless we make a Burns trade and acquire a top 6 center in FA, I'm not coming down from this ledge
If the goal is to take a step back, why trade two lottery tickets for Kunin? He's an easily-replacable player who is going to cost more than Balcers (while being worse). He will likely need a new contract at a significant raise when the team is ready to compete and probably on the downslope (if the targeted competitive window is in 3-4 seasons, Kunin will be 28-29).If the goal is to try and win this year, then sure. I don't think that is the stated goal (well actually we know that given the comments about probably taking a step back) so why are we going to saddle ourselves to a buyout when the stated goal becomes winning as opposed to just buying time right now when you're in this sort of reset window?
bad?…I mean there’s gotta be an FA signing coming right? What is this group?
Put yourself in the shoes of a free agent though. Why sign in San Jose is you don't know who the coach is? Unless we offer a ridiculous amount of money. This has to be working toward bigger moves. Burns is probably gone, Grier is gonna use the cap space to make some moves in FA.
If not, I'm down for a full tank.
Okay just trying to figure out Grier’s plan here without emotion:
-Doesn’t buy out Vlasic because… doesn’t want the penalty this year? Wants one more vet D when he trades Burns which I think he will.
-No Dahlen, Balcers. He’s clearing room of our tweeners that he sees as not playing his way.
So, with this cap space, he can re-sign the RFA guys, I guess?
Eklund - Hertl - Meier
??? - Couture - Labanc
Kunin - Bordeleau? - Gregor
Chlemevski - Bonino - Nieto
…I mean there’s gotta be an FA signing coming right? What is this group?
It’s the only thing that makes sense to me?
I'm just trying to justify any of this any way I canPut yourself in the shoes of a free agent though. Why sign in San Jose is you don't know who the coach is? Unless we offer a ridiculous amount of money.
If moving Burns is pivotal towards your bigger moves, then you don't let Burns take the lead on this. You need to have active discussions with him about the trajectory of the team, where you see him fitting/not fitting, etc. ala Chicago w/ Toews and Kane. This has to be working toward bigger moves. Burns is probably gone, Grier is gonna use the cap space to make some moves in FA.
If not, I'm down for a full tank.
Barabanov - Hertl - Meier
Bonino - Couture - Labanc/Gregor
Kunin - Bordeleau - Eklund
If he turns it around, people will forgive him. It’s not like we can decide anything, he’s getting atleast a year to do stuff. You all were clamoring for changes and hoping Grier wouldn't be on too much of a leash. I think everyone should give him more than a week before deeming this to be an absolute failure of an off season. It's a fresh look that the organization desperately needed. Give it time
I would try this also:Right , I forgot about Barabanov.
That second line is a nightmare sauce.
If Burns somehow yields a second line center and Couture goes 3C, it makes the team leagues better.
Barabanov - Hertl - Meier
Eklund - 2C - Labanc
Kunin - Couture - Gregor
Still not sure about it but at least it’s getting a little better.
OR we tank for Bedard.
Kunin and Leonard are 9 months apart in age. Leonard is not some lottery ticket any more than Kunin is if that's the logic that you want to use. Not like Kunin is some 28 year old bottom 6 guy with no pedigree. If anything, Kunin has more tools and profiles better (former 1st round pick vs Leonard being a late round pick) as a lottery ticket than Leonard. If the goal is to take a step back, why trade two lottery tickets for Kunin? He's an easily-replacable player who is going to cost more than Balcers (while being worse). The plan has been stated as "compete for the playoffs this year." Grier has mentioned maybe taking a step back, but right now it's hard to tell what this team is actually doing.
Maybe if the executive management had actually been doing their jobs and had a ready replacement plan in place to get us a GM and management team in a reasonable time frame, we'd have a clearer picture and possibly be in better shape.
Frankly, I don't see that the relatively small cap penalty for Vlasic is a big deal, and is very easy to plan around. It also dumps a bad player and opens up his spot for other players.
Ill be shocked if both Eklund and Bords are on the rosterI would try this also:
Barabanov - Hertl - Meier
Couture - 2C - Labanc
Eklund - Bordeleau - Kunin
No one in this current cap era is touching him aside from Arizona, and we're paying. Maybe Buffalo or Chicago and we're paying too.Have to assume Labanc is on the block as well. Not enough gutz on this team.
People wanted actual meaningful change. You all were clamoring for changes and hoping Grier wouldn't be on too much of a leash. I think everyone should give him more than a week before deeming this to be an absolute failure of an off season. It's a fresh look that the organization desperately needed. Give it time
He'd kinda have to be gone if we want to have the space for a game changing top 6 type. A team like Chicago could use him.Have to assume Labanc is on the block as well. Not enough gutz on this team.
Ufa period hasn't even started and you assume we're done? I don't like losing Rudy either but relax, wait and see. This could be step one to a signing or a trade.People wanted actual meaningful change.
Instead, the Sharks are changing the bottom-six, again, thinking it will have a different result. This core can’t win, and yet they’re tinkering around with the depth.
To top it off, Grier has given up assets for a more expensive (but worse) player, not qualified one player and bought out the other when at least one of them could have got some value in a trade.
For all the criticism that Chicago are getting, at least it’s clear what direction they’re going and making significant change.
I just don't think that's a fair thing to say when free agency hasn't even opened. Like I said, give it time. We don't know what else is in the works.People wanted actual meaningful change.

Worth it. We can suck it up for 1 season. Go for the 92-93 season loss record and realllyyyy guarantee the return.holding out hope that GM MG is literally going for the tank. might as well tank with an entertaining lineup if that's the case. If you finish last you are guaranteed one of Michkov or Bedard
