I am suprised that I agree with Dahlen not being qualified, since he is the type of player that's not really a top 6, but no bottom 6 either. I hope Sharks grab some of those unqualified RFA from the market, and push for their Middle 6 to look like a they can compete.

I'm not sure how will it look like but
Eklund - Hertl - Barabanov
FA/Bordeleau - Couture - Meier
FA - FA/Bordeleau - Kunin/Gregor
Balcers Bonino Gregor/Kunin

Forgot about Labanc...

Thinking Eklund will be traded for a grittier player. It’s pretty evident the type of team Grier is wanting to build and Eklund has no place on it.

As extreme as I think they will go, I don’t see Will being okay with that.

I think Eklund just gets sat or scrached until his development takes a big hit and he gets dealt as a reclaimation project in 3 years.

Even if Sharks go to a grittier way, I think they need Eklund and Bordeleau to be there too.
Both will paired up with guys that can keep them physically safe and let them work on their magic.
Hertl, Meier, Burns and probably Ferraro match that new way.

How does Gadjovich get qualified but not Dahlen...
Arbitration. Dahlen despite being awful still had 22ish points in 62ish games. That could be enough to get around a 2M contract in arbitration despite him being worth the minimum. Gadjovich not only doesn’t have arbitration rights, he’ll probably accept his QO which is slightly under .9M

Gadjovich's QO is two-way, so he has to earn a spot or he goes to the Cuda. According to CapFriendly, Dahlen's QO can also be two-way, but it took a one-way deal last summer to convince him to come over from Sweden.

Speculation: Dahlen told the organization he would go back to Sweden if he didn't get a one-way offer. Grier told him: "No, you need to earn an NHL spot to get an NHL salary." Dahlen asked to be let go to seek another NHL team that would give him a one-way deal or to return to Sweden.

The Megna thing is more an issue with how bad the team is that he was even in the lineup to impress people who fall in love with size and physicality too much.
He finished 3rd on the team in xGF for D-Men and 5th overall. Ironically, Dahlen was 6th and was non-tendered so shows that the analytics don't always tell the full story on guys, but Megna actually played well this season. If his name was one other than Megna (i.e. if he was a homegrown prospect that came up at age 23-25 or whatever like Middleton) he would be a fan favorite for his performance this year. The fact that you can get him for league minimum is nice to have as a 6th or 7th D-Man given there's no risk for the org if he can't repeat his level of play from last year.

This is overly dramatic and simple minded thinking. You can be competitive and gritty without being an ogre. Eklund played a smart and heady two way game while he was here and competed. There's a difference between that and being a guy like Merkley or Dahlen who don't really look overly engaged in the game and are just sort of out there existing unless the puck is on their stick.

Eklund benefits from having a guy like a Meier or someone else like that around that does more of the dirty work and creates more time and space for him. Issue is that we have a bunch of guys that are not Eklund level talents skill-wise that also don't have that compete level or grittiness to their game either and are essentially worthless players with no identity at the NHL level (Leonard was that sort of guy this year and got traded).
