For people hating on Nemec, they probably didn't see his performance at the WC. He was an absolute stud. Dominated in the game against Canada.
It is extremely hard to find RD unless you draft them or acquire them expensively through free agency.
Having a combo of Hughes-Nemec for the next decade is an absolute blessing.
He was absolutely the best defenseman in this draft. Superior to Jiricek. I said it early before the draft started that Nemec would be a more sensible pick. And I was proven right. Very impressed by Fitz for doing this.

Seattle must be thrilled that Wright fell to them. Him and Beniers as center depth for the foreseeable future is going to be great for them.

It's a good start, but their roster sucks and it'll be 4-5 yrs for them to build up with how Francis has started things.

As a reference point, the post pick interview Nemec was around the same size as the lady doing the interview. Wright looked way taller.

So yeah, AZ wasn't gonna trade up cause they would of gotten one of their centers in either Cooley or Wright. Nemec would of been gone at 4.

I'm sorry, he was not a stud at the WC at all. He was so passive on defense in each game. I recall only one successful back check in the whole tournament (on Mercer). Offensively, he only ever wristed the puck from the blue line, expect two back door passes that missed (Tatar whiffed on one). His puck carrying on the rush was just fine that didn't set up any high danger plays the entire tournament, and I actually don't recall a single breakout pass connecting.

Was he better than Jiricek? I could maybe accept the argument only because Jiricek had very limited ice time, especially after the first few games. I had no reason to have a bias on Nemec during the WC and I was extremely underwhelmed by him, especially defensively.

Apparently Flyers were high on Nemec too given how their D has been a dumpster fire of prospect or trade/FA misses lately. Nemec wasn't getting past 6 for sure.

How in the world they couldn't trade back I will never understand. And to me there isn't much of a difference between the top 2 D anyway if you were worried about getting sniped. Honestly at 2....you should prob go with Jiricek if you are hell bent on making the pick. He COULD be elite.

Nemec is a pure 2 way, passing dman. He will never be an elite top pairing guy because he doesn't have the shot, while also not being a stay at home mammoth. You don't draft offensive defensemen with limited shooting ability over what was on the board. You just don't do it. It's incompetent.

This is Zacha over Barzal all over again. Except this time it was god forbid we take a C because we already have 2!! Not like a C has ever converted to wing before.

And again, I like Nemec lol. Just not at #2.
