They must legitimately believe that Slaf is appreciably better than Wright. Which honestly would give me a little pause toward selecting Wright when the Canadian team isn't selecting a good old boy and a seemingly consensus #1 (who fits a need on top of all that) in their own backyard.
In order to pass on two C’s Wright and Cooley ….they must thimk Slaf is much better than the two . Passing on C for a winger is stupid.
They go C. Didn’t the Habs ask Slafkovsky at the combine if he can play C? Obviously they want /prefer a C nut, must really like Slaf and hope they can make him a C or somehow justify I’m their minds passing up on the two C’s and picking Slaf.

If the Habs do pick Slafkovsky , I 100% see them spinning it in post pick interviews that they see him being tried at C . Appeases fans that want a C amd maybe they think they can turn him into one.
Only way I see them passiv on C and talkimg a winger - they want to move him to C but I still don’t see how they think Slaf is that much better than those 2 that they think converting Slaf is a better idea

That makes no sense tkachuk is their best player
Even if Gaudreau leaves they can still offer Tkachuk an insane 8 year deal and would have the motivation of not losing their big star.

I always believed that Matthew wanted to go home and play in St Louis but the Blues wouldn’t go completely nuts his deal.

This is also why I’m not on the Tkachuk trade train, if he’s leaving Calgary he’s signing longterm in St. Louis.
