Why would the Sens not draft Russians? I feel like that's kind of weird if Melnyk is going to blame some random kid for the sins of his country. Slippery slope.

passions are running high, I wouldn’t want to be the GM who introduces an arrogant 18 year old Putin supporting Russian prospect to Eugene Melnyck. Gotta be smart about these things

This is quite the assumption.

but honestly if you were the GM and you had a Russian prospect who was nationalist pro-Putin player and was going to talk about it like Ovechkin, would you draft him knowing Melnyck is proud of his Ukrainian roots and has commented publicly on these issues. I wouldn’t

(this is situational, like how Coach Belichek does things, don’t think it’s a broad assumption as you stated)

Nazar looks pretty fast to me. How do you figure Geekie for falling? Completely agree we should be open to moving the pick if the right player is available.

Well Geekie was ranked 5th on McKenzie's pre-season list and was ranked 10th on the mid-season list.

I imagine scouts expected more out of him than slightly over a PPG, especially considering he had around a PPG last year (albeit in a short sample size).

He's been completely underwhelming in my viewings. Just wasn't able to engage in the play at all with his terrible feet and sluggish skating.

I'm taking Lambert (with the red flags) over Geekie

With Eugene parents being Ukrainian, and being vocal about Russian interference in Ukraine in the past, I don’t see us drafting a Russian this year, and maybe not even holding on to the ones we got.

Wow that bad huh? Do you have anything concrete on Lambert that would say that.. apart from the switching of teams

Ho-Sang comparison was more based on style of play than attitude issues, but those are apparently present too.

Lambert skates very fast and handles the puck well but there's just nothing between his ears to turn the flash into results.

He's trending in the wrong direction and that is not a good sign either.

Seems like you have strong feelings about him. I agree he is not trending in the right direction.. and that would be another issue for the Sens drafting him but my post was about what I would do. I like him more than I like Geekie.. I think he has an incredible toolset and IQ comment seems to be somewhat divided among scouts from what I gather. Fair if you don't like him. I think he has fantastic upside and I like what I have seen over last year and this year even though I have some concerns. Very exciting player.. Great speed and skills. I've seen him make some really nice plays to team mates and he can finish as well. Ho-Sang is a whole other case imo although he is talented as well.

You've made up another fictional scenario I don't get it. No one wants this war. Ovechkin even said it, this scenario isn't real.

I think it would be pretty stupid to not pick a prospect simply because they're Russian. That being said if they are aligned with Putin then I could see the team pass on "character" issues.

Geekie is a DND for me. I see extremely limited NHL upside due to his skating.

I personally want one of Savoie or Lambert. We need more skilled forwards that drive the play.
Yurov seems ideal if we are around 8. I first move heaven and earth to try to get Slafkovsky.

Any player with skill ozzing from them. No more Boucher’s, Rogers, Tkachuk’s we have plenty of those.

Yurov is an interesting one because he's a meat and potatoes pro-style forward first and foremost, but also brings a very impressive skillset. Reminds me of Tarasenko, but less of a goal scorer and a bit better playmaker and two-way forward. He's in the top five for me.

Tough to say if he fits the criteria you're looking for. On the one hand, he can make plays through the neutral zone, above the hashmarks, below the hashmarks. He's one of the highest IQ players in the draft, along with Wright and Cooley. I'm just not sure I'd call his overall skillset elite. I believe, like Tarasenko, he'll probably peak at somewhere around 70 points. As others have said though, it is highly unlikely the Sens draft a Russian, so probably a moot point.

This is about if Ottawa would draft a Russian and a Melnyck’s feelings on that and I added some context saying do you think the GM would present a pro-Putin 18 year to Melnyck?

don’t know why you’re mentioning Ovechkin who looks like a bigger idiot every day that goes by

especially bizarre lack of imagination on your part seeing as the Sens didn’t draft a Russian for years and it was speculated it was because of Melnyck politics. This exact scenerio was even mentioned on the radio the other day, so it’s a real thing people think about

It looks like a distinctive top 8 in this class then it falls off. Hopefully we land somewhere in that zone.

I get Logan Brown vibes from him. I don't want him either. I think he has better pace/work ethic than Logan but hes not a player im too interested in.

Yurov would be my choice. I would bet the Sens do not draft a Russian.
