NHL Entry Draft 2022 NHL Draft Thread - Part 2

Is it really a suprise they are targeting Gauthier. Big, American... Thats the teams MO and while I like bigger players personally you still need a mix at some point. This team is lacking elite level skill in the system, the prospect pool is deep with bigger guys or compete guys.
I don't think the Amercian theme is the team's MO. I think skill (skating, scoring, passing, etc.) should be.

Detroit seems primed to take Ostlund.

Doubt it.

NA fans are obviously very impressed with how looked at the U18s, but Detroit's Swedish scouts have watched him all year in the Superelit where he was apparently a bit of a disappointment.

Ostlund is probably a guy who HF scouts will be higher on than NHL scouts. Wouldn't shock me if he goes late 1st or early 2nd, much like another highly skilled Swede Jonatan Berggren who was amazing at the U18s in his draft year, despite having top 10 talent.

Perfectly reasonable point of view to have imo. I agree with you that this is a good draft depth wise. I just think most of the best talent at forward tops out as middle 6 players who won't reach that level for another 3-4 years. We need another bonafide PPG threat to turn this team into a contender and preferably in the next couple of years while guys like Norris, Stutzle, Batherson and Sanderson are on affordable contracts. I believe Slaf can be that guy.

Curious what (if anything) you would trade with the #7 to move up to #2?
I personally am not as big of a fan of Slafkovsky as the rest of the Sens board. I’d take him if he fell to Ottawa at 7, but not at #2.

If I were to move up, it’d be to select Jiricek or Nemec, more specifically Nemec. I think Seattle may do something like #7, then the earliest of our two seconds for #4. That’s what I’d do.

Who exactly in this draft has this elite level of skill that the Sens should pick? And why aren't they going #1 OV or higher than 7th OA? Does Wright have an elite level of skill?

Gauthier, Lekkerimaki, Yurov .... okay all of them.
Pretty patronizing post from you, not really in your character. Different types of players are drafted for different reasons as they bring different tools to the table. I think they should be targeting skill. Not necessarily tools built around physicality and size. Ill use two players that could both be available for the sens as an example. Gauthier is a big guy with strong raw tools physical tools and plays center. Lekkerimaki is a skilled average sized winger. The center typically carries more value but the sens dont necessarily need to target that position having Norris, Stutzle, Pinto and Grieg. I want the team to take the BPA but if they have them rated similarly the sens can afford at this point to draft the skill guy due to the organizational depth.

You do tend to gravitate towards smaller players as you dont value size from what I have seen in your post history. So that makes sense to me.

I wouldn’t nessasarily say I prefer guy that are small, moreso guy that have high upside.

I love player like Hutson, Cooley, Buchelkikov, Firkus, Mateychuk and Lambert, yes but I also love guys like Gauthier, Warren, Luneau, Jiricek and Lorenz.

I personally favour players that have high hockey IQ, no matter their size. I think that player that are consistently in the right place and are driving the play for their teams are guys that will have the most success at the next level.

I will look at size as the 4th most important thing for a player to have after IQ, Skating and puck skills. I also think Ottawa has alot of prospect that are big and it would be smart to diversify the prospect pool with some more skilled, high upside player. And alot of big guys this age, they don’t use their size to their advantage - I find a guy like Jagger Firkus plays a bigger game than a guy like Geekie for example. You can be small but play a game like a big guy.

Hope this answers any concern you have

I didn't mean for my post to be patronizing in any way, sorry you took it that way. What I was getting at was who do you see as having elite skill in this draft. Wright as an example is ranked #1 & I am yet to hear anyone use the term elite skill with him. What I was wondering about was who you thought are the players ranked behind him that might be considered to have elite talent? Having watched Wright a few times he's an above average player & I think he is going to be a very good NHL player, maybe like Schieflle, but I'm not sure he has elite skill.

It's interesting that you used the two guys I like & think they could draft in Gauthier & Lekkerimaki if no one from the top 5 falls to them. Who are the skilled guys you think come in after the top 5 they might be interested in? I've got Lekkerimaki ahead of most of the other guys although I also like Yurov, but I don't think he would be considered elite either. I'm just interested in your opinion on this.

Interesting thoughts. What do you see in a guy like Lambert if you say that Hockey IQ is the most important trait for a prospect to have when, from all regards its the biggest question mark in his game?

Simple really, Lambert is one of the most technically gifted player eligible for the 2022 draft - alongside Hutson and Cooley, he is also one of the most skilled and dynamic player available.
He is probably best skater outside the NHL and have very little to improve on in this regard, his speed, agility and acceleration are second to none. Because of his skating and puck handling combination, he is a top 5 player in the draft, if not best in transition - the way he manipulates defenders to pivot to create space for himself reminds me of McDavid in a sense, his hands also do a very good job at keeping up with his feet. If he were to step into the NHL today he’d be a top-20 skater in the league.

There is inherent risk with Lambert and he could be a Josh Ho-Sang 2.0, but I believe in the right situation - Lambert with thrive.

Really excited by this pick.

Just for context, here are the guys drafted 6-8 over the past 10 years. Lots of good players in there.

2012: Lindholm, Dumba, Pouliot
2013: Monahan, Nurse, Ristolainen
2014: Virtanen, Fleury, W. Nylander
2015: Zacha, Provorov, Werenski
2016: Tkachuk, Keller, A. Nylander
2017: Glass, Andersson, Mittelstadt
2018: Zadina, Hughes, Boqvist
2019: Seider, Cozens, Broberg
2020: Drysdale, Holtz, Quinn
2021: Edvinsson, Eklund, Clark

Geekie, Savoie and Korchinski all still alive in the WHL Semi's

The more I watch, the more Korchinski grows. Guy is going to be a machine (Sens obviously won't be going his direction)

Seattle/Kamloops is a fun series to follow with 6 top ~100 picks, Reid Schaefer screams Sens 2nd rounder, though I'm not sure he makes it there

He definitely does. With the depth of this draft I think there is a chance he makes it to our pick at 39 but it will be close. Could definitely see a team really fall in love with him and take him earlier.

If he's gone Paul Ludwinski and Adam Sykora are a couple of other guys I'd love to target with that pick.

There is a rumour Wild interested in Shane Pinto for Fiala f*** no . I’m telling everyone Pinto is going to be very good. I get Fiala is very good now but he is gonna be expensive as f*** in terms of cost to acquire and cap hit % . I think pinto will be a better overall centre than Norris in everything but scoring goals

I’m scared if these rumours are true because it seems like a prime opportunity for Dorion to do his signature f*** up

My Semi-realistic wantlist at 7:

1. David Jiricek
2. Cutter Gauthier
3. Simon Nemec
4. Trade the pick
5. Joakim Kemell

Wow, Nemec below Cutter? He's closer to go 2nd than to us, imo.

Nemec
Jiri
Kemell/Lekki
trade pick

is my order. With the top 2 being very long shots.

I could definitely see Ottawa trading down a couple spots and picking Kasper, or maybe even at 7, imo.

I am definitely one of the guys who is absolutely sold on Cutter Gauthier becoming a real top-end talent in the league. His combination of size and skill is something NHL scouts will drool over, especially in Ottawa where we have put a big emphasis on size.

I think people said it was someone trying to make a joke and not a real rumour

1. David Jiricek RD - Ott needs a top pairing RD
2. Cutter Gauthier LW - exactly the kind of player Stutzle needs on LW
3. Danila Yurov C/RW - probably the most complete player
4. Johnathan Lekkerimaki RW - IMO the best sniper & goal scorer in this draft
5. Frank Nazar C/RW - non-stop motor, a better version of C. Brown

Gauthier - Stutzle - Lekkerimaki/Nazar - one of these guys could end up on Stutzle's wing. Lekkerimaki or Nazar fill the skills needed in the top six, while Gauthier fills the size & grit Stutzle needs on his wing especially in a playoff role. It will be a tough call.

From this I think you could almost narrow it down to Gauthier or Lekkerimaki . One of those will be there and you have them both over Nazar. Although I think Yurov would be a worthy pick .. I think the Sens will stay clear of drafting a comparable Russian that early this year. Jiricek is almost certainly gone imo but if not he would be the BPA.

I would say, its not even just this year they will stay away from Russians. They haven't drafted a Russian out of Russia in almost 20 years I think. (Sokolov had been in Canada for like 4 years when we drafted him)

I just don't like absolutes... past is the past .. going forward who knows those things can change

It was a joke tweet, but I don't blame you for being nervous about Dorion making a trade.

Not a fan of Kemell?

If we could get another 1st late I'd love to get Miroshnichenko. Sure it's a bit of a risk it could give us some mad depth. And if we get Cutter Gauthier we could move him to RW.

Miroshnichenko-Stutzle-Gauthier

Like what should have been a late first and Turris for Duchene?

I don’t want to trade Pinto either, but the Dorion f***ing up in big trades thing is an HFSens myth.

I think it will come down to one of the following at 7:

Kemell
Gauthier
Jiriceck

From Pronman, there is smoke that Gautheir may go top 5, which is not surprising given his combination of size and tools.

Other than a RD, Kemell just seems like the biggest win for the Sens. He is a skilled, play driving forward that may only be available at 7, because an injury impacted his play and cooled down his insane production/ He had a very Sens like injury this season with a shoulder keeping him out for a few weeks. If wasn't for the injury, he might have solidified himself as a guaranteed top 5 pick. The team needs to add another right handed skill player to the mix; Batherson (and maybe Pinto) can't be the only righty that make a play. He may also even challenge for a spot as soon next year with a successful year of pro hockey already under his belt, but most likely he will need a year in Belleville to acclimatize to NA hockey.

Jiricek probably doesn't last until 7.
