Pronman Mock

Big 5
6. Gauthier
7. Kemell
8. Kasper

7. Ottawa Senators: Joakim Kemell, RW, JYP-Liiga

Kemell isn’t the biggest winger, but he’s a highly talented goal-scorer who can drive the play. He has a lot of skill, but also adds a high compete level Ottawa typically covets in their draft picks. Gauthier could very well be in their mix as well.

8. Detroit Red Wings: Marco Kasper, C, Rogle-SHL

Detroit’s need for a center is well-documented and Kasper looks like a potential top two line center. Some may be surprised to see Kasper’s name this high, but he’s trending in this range with some teams and a strong World Championships is only helping that argument.

Interesting that Pronman says we may be targeting Gauthier too. I also find it interesting to see Savoie slipping to 9, I think Bob has/had him 4th in his Jan scouting poll.
He was 7th in his rankings last week, and I foresee him dropping even further come his final list

Would be surprised if there weren't ~8+ forwards taken before him

Bob let out rankings last week? I must have missed them...
Just the top 7 from only 9 scouts

1. Wright
2. Slaf
3. Cooley
4. Nemec
5. Kemell
6. Jiricek
7. Savoie

Mentioned that Jiricek was close to overtaking Kemell

I'm thinking Jiricek moves up to 5 and makes a solidly firm top 5, then a dropoff to Kemell to 6+, Savoie to 9+ and guys like Mintuyuk, Korchinski, Gauthier, Kasper, Lekkerimaki, etc. will move up come the final list around July.

Huh. Pronman is saying some scouts think Gauthier is a top 5 guy, or even top 3, but he's more divisive and some aren't at all convinced. Not sure how trustworthy hearsay from Pronman is but if it's accurate, it means 5-8 could be a spot where some movement happens (maybe a trade to grab a guy a team really likes, or just some surprises).

We're at an interesting spot in the draft, was really hoping for Jiricek which seems unlikely at this point, but I think we'll have our choice from a few very good prospects so long as we don't go off the board again.

Jiricek is the dream but a top 5 selection appears more and more likely.

Gauthier will be interesting because I wonder how many teams will project him as a C. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he goes at 4, 5 or 6.

It's certainly looking like the only "locks" at the top of the draft are Wright, Salfkovsky and Cooley. Sitting where we sit, we'll have a chance at a Gauthier/Nemec/Jiricek/Kemell.

Any of those would be excellent additions to the core.

Trading the pick is getting less desirable - hopefully we don't do it and just sign a decent UFA. We essentially burned a top 10 pick last year with the Boucher selection. A team like Ottawa can't do that again.

Is it really a suprise they are targeting Gauthier. Big, American... Thats the teams MO and while I like bigger players personally you still need a mix at some point. This team is lacking elite level skill in the system, the prospect pool is deep with bigger guys or compete guys.

No, not really a surprise, he's always been one of the guys that checks a lot of boxes for us. He's been growing on me as a target as I've accepted that we won't be getting one of the two top D.

My wish list was Slafkovsky, then one of the two D, clearly I won't be getting my wish this year...

I am not sure its impossible a D man falls. But yes its unlikely. Slaf is going top 2 so you are correct they arent getting him. This organization used to like Swedes but maybe not with the current regime.

Could the devils take a d man if Slafkovsky goes 1? They need RD....

Hypothetical scenario: Montreal takes Wright #1 overall and New Jersey offers us the #2 pick for our entire draft. Do you take it?

Personally I think I do. Slafkovsky imo is head and shoulders the best player from this draft and wouldn't look out of place in a top 6 role as early as next year. We head into next season with something like a top 9 of:

Tkachuk - Norris - Joseph
Slafkovsky - Stutzle - Batherson
Formenton - Pinto - Brown

I think we're at the point where we need to start trading quantity for quality. Our window is just opening and adding a guy like Slafkovsky might be the perfect piece to compete for the next 6-7 years.

We absolutely need ONE of these 7 guys... no?

Let's assume the Top-4 is 100% gone... That leaves Kemell, Jiricek and Savoie

Would the Sens pass on any of these 3?

I mean, which other prospects people wouldn't mind having over any of these 3 guys?

Frank Nazar?
Danila Yurov?
Jonathan Lekkerimaki?
Cutter Gauthier?
Marco Kasper?

Tkachuk - Norris - Joseph
Slafkovsky - Stutzle - Batherson
Formenton - Pinto - Brown

I’d be surprised if the Sens never had ~7+ forwards over Savoie. Kemell will be a guy they will look at, Gauthier is probably ahead of them both for the Sens, I’d certainly take Lekkerimaki and Kasper ahead of Savoie, as well as Yurov if not for the situation surrounding him. Geekie, as much as fans won’t like it, will be up there. Ohgren will get looks in the top 10. Both Korchinski and Mintyukov would be worthy too 10 picks, and both are rising rapidly all year.

It seems to me that if we get one of Kemell, Jiricek, Savoie, Gauthier, we would do well.

Projecting the future growth of these prospects is not a science and therefore impossible to do with certainty. I favor the more highly skilled players who can skate well.

Who exactly in this draft has this elite level of skill that the Sens should pick? And why aren't they going #1 OV or higher than 7th OA? Does Wright have an elite level of skill?

Me personally, I don’t.

This draft is quite deep in regards to talent, alot of guys going 70/80 overall could very well be first rounders in different years.

I also don’t think the gap between #2 and #7 is that big of a gap where you’d need to get rid of your entire draft.

Yeah I guess Savoie's size makes him an unlikely Sens pick

Based on where we pick, I think the guy I hope the most is Joakim Kemell

It seems we'll have plenty of valuable options but I'm trying to get a better sense about the TIERS of this draft. I'm late on my draft study this year.

And seriously, if one of Nemc or Jiricek is there, we better take him lol. RHD are worth their pot of gold

And also hope we're not taking any LHD with that pick (Mateychuk/Korchinski/Mintyukov)

Perfectly reasonable point of view to have imo. I agree with you that this is a good draft depth wise. I just think most of the best talent at forward tops out as middle 6 players who won't reach that level for another 3-4 years. We need another bonafide PPG threat to turn this team into a contender and preferably in the next couple of years while guys like Norris, Stutzle, Batherson and Sanderson are on affordable contracts. I believe Slaf can be that guy.

Curious what (if anything) you would trade with the #7 to move up to #2?
