Interesting.

The 'he won't be in the spotlight in Minnesota' take is kinda weird imo. Do they know it's one of he most prestigious hockey program?? You can probably ice an entire team with alumnis.
Cooley already did a promo/add video for the University of Minnesota, so yeah, not really a "no spotlight" place.

And it's not like being away for a year or two make the spotlight go away once you come to Montréal. Ask Caufield.

I really like Cooley and I think I would take him #1 if I was in Montreal's situation. Wright may have a slight edge in some area's (especially size) but I think that given the market and the team that we are building taking Cooley will lead to better results. Slaf or Lekkerimaki are also going to be great players, but getting a top C is just so hard to do unless you are picking very high in the draft so i think we should seize that opportunity unless we really don't believe in these guys.

This is getting out of hand. Hughes is bonafide a #1 center. Wright is compared to Hischier but is being projected as a #2 center. Cooley is ranked below Wright on most lists (not all) and is now being annointed a better center than Hischier?

You're severely under-rating Hischier. If Wright was guaranteed to be as good as Hischier when he's the same age, there wouldn't be any debate right now among NHL scouts.
Wright is/has been more touted than Hischier was prior to the 2017 draft.

Really no one knows.

That was from yesterday.

I'd expect the decision was made last night, if not then it's tonight. They have an entire draft list to finalize and they aren't doing that all the day before.

Nothing substantial has been said or in a coordinated effort
I'm sure by now the decision has been made. They are probably moving down the list for the later picks.

I think the 33OA is highly valuable. Someone(s) is gonna slide out the 1st Rd. Habs management will have a whole day to think over who they can take with that pick as they'll have first bite again. For example if someone like Brad Lambert or Mesar drop, Habs can snipe them before anyone else has the chance to. Picks will obviously be included in potential trades as Habs have 14 (a bit too many) but I'm curious to see which active players that other teams target on the Habs. Dallas and Petry maybe. Anderson+ and Philly maybe.
Yes it would be better to get another pick or two in the top 50 than to move 10 spots or so, at least based on the varying lists. I suppose if they really, really want a specific player it could make sense.

That came up with a number of the habs picks in the last couple of decades, multiple GMs. Lots of "he's big, if he can fix X and maybe Y he'll be a monster" comments as they looked for the next Chara. There aren't many players who make big steps late in their career, especially with an organization that was almost hostile to the idea of player development.

With 1OA you don't look for a guy where you have to fix a bunch of things, you look for a guy who is likely to work out with high upside. The statistical difference from first to third is big, like you would normally need a significant prospect or another mid first round pick, but this year it's unlikely anyone will value it that much. Maybe someone who trades for NJ's pick would be willing to do what it takes for 1OA.
So very true of past mgmt.
In almost every instance, a low IQ player won’t be coached into gaining one, a poor skater will remain limited, a timid player won’t suddenly start playing agressively and so on.

For sure certain flaws can be mitigated more easily than others. The assumption for most limitations should be they won’t be fixed.

Are we still satisfied with what’s there and project the strengths to grow even more, resulting in an impact player despite a certain amount of weaknesses?
That’s the question Hughes and co seem to be asking themselves and I think it’s the right one.

The more I read and watch the more I think Cooley might be the guy to get. I will be happy with either Wright or Cooley.
I'll be pissed if we pick Slaf but I will be ready to be proven wrong.

Can we just fast forward to thursday already ?

Interesting excerpt from a piece written by Martin Leclerc for RadCan:

“Les équipes approchées par Kent Hughes se sont fait offrir les 26e et 33e sélections (la 33e sélection étant la première du second tour) en échange de leur position au milieu du premier tour.”

He says the teams Hughes has approached, have been offered the Habs’ 26th and 33rd picks for those teams’ picks that are in the middle of the first round.

Les recruteurs de Montréal ne sont pas des caves. Comme tout le monde, ils voient bien qu’il y a une sorte de cassure dans ce repêchage (une baisse de talent) autour de la 19e position.

Leclerc claims that Habs scouts are aware like everyone else, that there is some kind of talent drop off around the 19th pick. I don’t know where Leclerc is getting this, he’s not saying.

What’s interesting is the strategic advantage of owning the 33rd pick. As per Leclerc, that 1st pick of the 2nd round is worth gold. The thinking is that on the day following the completion of the first round, those teams that own early picks in the 2nd round, receive a ton of calls. Every team wants them. As per a western scout consulted by Leclerc, the fact of Hughes dangling that 33rd pick is making his pitch enticing.

I’m guessing there’s a whole lot of rumination going on by those teams who will have not been able to get their guy in the first round or who have been owned by counterparts. That 33rd pick becomes a shot at immediate redemption.

These discussions are starting to remind me of the 2009 draft, where Tavares was the consensus top pick for years leading up to the draft, but then in the final weeks there was speculation that NYI actually preferred the speedier Duchene and it was a distinct possibility that they would draft him at 1. Snow kept his cards close to his chest and ended up selecting Tavares in the end, despite the drama that led to the selection and I expect the same thing will happen on Thursday with Wright and the Habs.

Yeah, in Fantasyland.

And, BTW, Leon was also projected by a lot of "experts" to be a 2nd line center at the time.

Yeah nobody knows how these 17-18 year old will progress. The development curves are different for all of them, so I always take what these so called "experts" say with a grain of salt.
